I'm glad I took the time and figured out a way to smoke SG flakes without fighting them. The payout has been so nice.
FVF is my favorite, but this bowl of SJF has me questioning my judgment on that.

I'm glad I took the time and figured out a way to smoke SG flakes without fighting them. The payout has been so nice. FVF is my favorite, but this bowl of SJF has me questioning my judgment on that. Reminds me of how when I first started piping, I truly thought some samples of SG flakes all tasted like wet, floppy dog treats. It would be at least another couple years before I came back to respect them and properly rub and dry them a bit. Both Full Virginia and St. Jame flakes being well represented in my cellar. St. James Flake vies among the very top 3 VaPer tobaccos of all time, in my opinion. I often do consider it the best one.

I couldn't agree more! "If I had to choose..." yadda yadda yadda... I'd be good with just SJF and FVF.
I don't really dry mine unless the flakes are on the thicker side. I just bend them, twist 'em, wad 'em up, and stuff 'em in my pipe. And I don't mean "stuff" as in cramming it in there. I leave it springy. As soon as a flame hits the tobacco it swells up and finishes filling the bowl.
Years ago (that actually sounds funny to me because I don't feel like I've been smoking a pipe that long) I'd dry them almost crisp and pack them in, I felt like it lost too much flavor, took too many relights, and burned too hot. Same results with the few times I tried to cube it.
But now I've got it down to what works for me and I'm never disappointed. And in pipe smoking, that's all that really matters.
