A nearly perfect day: 72 at 1130, sun, mild breeze, 42% humidity. Glorious. And so gratefully received.

86-proof can be quite enlightening. True but I prefer Levon Helm's recommendation that Bourbon be 100 proof. From "Rag, Mama. Rag".

I'm trying to manage my wonky sleep schedule. If I take a long nap during the day, I'm not tired enough to sleep longer at night and end up being awake around four in the morning, hence the very early posts. I have a similar sleep pattern. About three to four hours and then awake for two hours or so and then back for another three to four hours of sleep. Common enough problem. There is even a novel written about it, Second Sleep by the British author Robert Harris. Seems this pattern has been experienced by many for centuries. Makes for a long night. It used to be the normal way of life in the 1600s and before.

I have had a concealed Carry Permit for years, but during Covid, I missed the date for renewing my permit and it went past the grace period. I finally decided to pull the trigger and get permitted again, which required taking a four-hour class. The instructor opened the class with a video taken at a hotel parking lot where a 24-year-old punk emerged with full body armor and just started trying to stack bodies up. He shot at a car that pulled in, killed the driver and the other three occupants high tailed it out of there. By the time it was done, and a cop took the trash out the trash had expended over 200 rounds of ammo. The instructor said: Ok, you are there, you have a permit, and you have your sidearm, what would you do? I immediately said that I would get away as fast as possible (keep in mind, no one was close to the guy...the only people fleeing were across the parking lot). I heard about four voices behind me say "I would shoot him" The instructor never did say what the proper response would be and went on with the class explaining what is a justified, and what is an unjustified shoot, and the legal ramifications someone will find themselves in should they find themselves in the gravest extreme. etc, etc, etc... The class ended with him selling prepaid legal defense insurance that was really pricey, I am covered by another company that is about half the price with a stellar record that provides expert testimony by household names should they be needed and high caliber attorneys.Anyway... he never did say what the best response would be...if you are facing a guy across a parking lot and he has a long gun in semi-auto, tactical helmet, and I have a pistol I am going to boogie out of there and let the boys in blue handle it...exacting a long shot to the face, at night, with a handgun under stress can happen, but I am not in a hurry to bet on that skill set. Anyway...some of the answers and questions made me cringe, if I was teaching the class I would have said, "OK you are getting your permit, the next thing that you need to do is get some training by professional instructors and read everything you can by Massad Ayoob."

Sorry about the long winded post, John. I did not mean to offend! You did not offend me. I deleted my post. While I agreed with your conclusions, I am disturbed by the many people who have no concept of what a CCW license is for namely personal protection in an encounter, not the quelling of a prepared mass shooter. My answer to the problem posed by your instructor is; withdraw to safe cover, evaluate the situation, contact law officers equipped to deal with the situation. If one has a special advantage, then, maybe, intervene and take a shot. That is unlikely but it could happen that way.

I know that you were not offended, John… just yanking your chain.😂 I could not agree more with your opinion, my CCW is for when there are no other options and I am imminent danger of loss of life, or limb. Situational awareness is key and getting yourself out of harms way as quick as possible. I was amazed that some people attended the class to get the permit without doing any research, or educating themselves. For what it’s worth I subscribe to the prepaid services: www.armedcitizensnetwork.org/The advisory board is a really solid group of individuals: www.armedcitizensnetwork.org/index.php/defensefund/advisory-boardThe network of lawyers is populated by people with a high level of proficiency, I have met a handful of them.

Yeah… seasoned citizens take a bit longer to heal than you do you young whippersnapper!😉 Glad that things are on an upward trend, I get it about the long week, it is tough to see someone that close suffering. Let me know if you need anything, I will be passing through Tucson this coming Wed/Thursday to Bisbee/ Tombstone/ Sierra Vista.

My neighbor next door got himself lost way up in the mountains east of Little Costilla Peak in the Valle Vidal Unit of the Carson National Forest of NM. He was last seen at 3:00 PM yesterday. Fortunately, we have cell phone text contact with him and the NMSP and NM G&F have pinged his location. His GF and I have been encouraging him to REMAIN AT THAT SPOT for someone to join him and walk him out. He is a senior citizen albeit fit and somewhat experienced in back country hiking. He had the good sense to take a Down jacket, space blanket, food and water. So he was able to make a cold camp for the night. He is OK this morning. Checking his coordinates on Google Earth, he is on the east face of a ridge so the morning Sun can warm him. He did not bring a lighter or matches or flint and steel, so no fire. Tsk, tsk. He has a compass but apparently never learned compass orientation. he is in a spot with no visible roads, the area has many old logging roads. We have been in touch with 911 Dispatch who turned this over to the NMSP who turned it over to Game and Fish. I know the local officers and they are fit, capable men who can get him out IF he will just remain in place and NOT get injured. His phone battery is running out so we keep communication to a minimum.
Why do people go into the back country without full preparation and equipment? This happens often enough. Fortunately he was partially prepared and will likely come back with a little help. A Zippo, a compass, a topo map, a whistle, and a little training are all useful in times like this. Also, put the Masculine pride in self sufficiency aside and let someone help when disoriented.

I certainly hope that he's going to be okay. People really need to be prepared for unforseen events when out in the wilderness and a first aid kit is always a good thing to have in a day pack.

So far his is uninjured and I am trying to keep him still so he does not trip, slip or otherwise injure himself. He is cold and fatigued. Not the best way to hike out alone. He has his GF with him yesterday but they became separated. She returned to the road found their truck locked and the keys in his pocket. She was able to get a ride back to our village from someone driving past. Hunting season is underway up there which is another reason to stay still. He became disoriented and walked further into the mountains away from where he left the truck.

Scary situation, John. Cold and fatigue aren’t a recipe for good decision making, but hopefully he sits tight like you’re telling him.

The rescue team are up there but have not located him yet. It is getting late and clouding up for rain which will make the search more difficult. Then there is the long walk out! Getting anxious.
