Just me and the dogs now, at last. Had deer hunters here all weekend. Very good friends but not a real rifleman in the bunch. One of them tried a 300Y shot— which he is NOT good for— and wounded a deer. There was a blood trail that petered out and they did not recover the deer. That was the only blood shed on their visit and they went home unvenisoned. For me there is no worse outcome of a hunt than a wounded and unrecovered animal, but these are old friends and I pretty much stifled myself.

Bummer. Everyone hates that. I don't think that I would have ever taken a 300 yard shot, even when I was good for it on paper. I have nephews that do that in West Texas and I can't argue with their results, even out to 500 yards. I've spent long nights crawling through the bush looking for a deer that was hit good but just wouldn't give up. He was found a week later 75 yards away under a brush pile next to a fence in a creek bed. That's why I shoot a 45-70, if I shoot at all. Thing is, my buddy won't take a shot longer than 250 yards with his 300 and 338. Has a house full of African antelope and other game animals.

A .300 or .338 certainly should do the job at 250. (I'm assuming we're not talking about a .300 Savage, though that likely would, too.)
Well, I got to talk to the actual property manager today. He committed -- in writing -- to replacing the carpet and any damaged drywall, provide manpower to move my stuff back into place, and have a professional cleaning done. He says the repairs will be completed by sometime tomorrow afternoon. We'll see.
I also got my insurance claim process started.

That’s good news, Urb. Let’s hope he comes through.
NO rifle “gets the job done.” None. It’s the guy behind it that does that.

Thanks.
Both have to be up to the task. The rifleman doing his job won't overcome insufficient ft-lbs. At 250 yards, a .300 or .338 Win Mag should certainly be enough gun. Does that phrasing suit you better.

He hasn't been charged. Putting this to the Grand Jury is common. As much as Houston has changed, he would never be convicted. I've been on Houston jurys. They are fair, but if the evidence is strong, kiss your a$$ goodbye. Plus the political visual of prosecuting someone being widely proclaimed a hero by the Hispanic community.

I believe in Ruark’s off-quoted mantra “Use enough gun.” But a 338 WM is overkill for deer at any sensible range. “Insufficient FPE” is mostly a myth IMO.

Cold morning. Around this time every year I get tired of it. The idea of getting out of the warm bed, to cold surfaces , dressing into cold clothes. The dog is always excited. I have always asked for one thing in a dog, to be ready. Ready for whatever. I am reminded of that when he is ready and I am not. I guess if I require it of him he has the right to require it from me. Spent the morning doing the simple chores as usual . And as usual the sun comes over the trees as I am filling waterers. I feel it in my shoulders first. The warmth then spreads down my arms , stops at my hands for a bit. Then my lower back and its familiar ache appreciates the warm as well, then down my legs to the mud boots. Feet stay cold , due to I assume bad circulation and a few holes in said boots. I laugh at how I ever think staying in bed can compare to the beauty of the world and how it charges a person. I put the duck waterer back , pick up a few eggs for breakfast. Breakfast just laying on the ground waiting on me. I am bless beyond anything a person deserves.

I believe in Ruark’s off-quoted mantra “Use enough gun.” But a 338 WM is overkill for deer at any sensible range. “Insufficient FPE” is mostly a myth IMO. On my friends last trip to Africa, he shot several of the very small antelope for camp meat with the 338,because that's what he had. I asked if there was much meat left. He said that the bullets didn't open up and didn't do as much damage as you would think. Very little bloodshot meat. A 470 would have most likely made a mess. My nephew, who is the most successful deer hunter I know, uses a lot of different guns, but he prefers the 25-06. In his experience it is always like the deer is hit by a bolt of lightning. They are serious hunters and I listen to what they say. Thing is that they are very good shots and they work at hunting seriously. A person who picks up a rifle once every 2 or 3 years is going have much less success.

I said it was certainly enough. Insufficient energy being a myth is why most people hunting Class 4 game use a.177 pellet gun.

If more people would take only shots they were capable of, and use good marksmanship I would agree. One CAN safely take even a small deer with a .22LR if one does it right. The problem is the window to screw up such a shot is WAY too high and common people just don't care enough to do it right. So more FPE is always better. though, wouldn't it be nice if folks stopped trying to compensate and just did things right the first time?

I stopped by the store today to grab a roll of TUMS. Well, I only had a $20. I normally buy scratchers in pairs, but today I bought 3... because what can you really do with just a $5 bill? Ticket 1 - 0, Ticket 2 - free ticket, Ticket 3 - $500!!
Just in time for a Wilke order. This peanut butter and chocolate is phenomenal and now I want the plain peanut butter too. Might as well throw in more Black Raspberry as well. The rest will go to a special day with the kiddos.
Thank you Georgia lottery for not stealing my money for once.

That's also how you turn $15 into $500, and then $500 into $100. 🤣🤣

Tonight is the drawing for the $1,100,000,000 prize. Last count, our pool was up to 17 people putting up $10 each. Might be more now. Let's see. Odds are 1:300,000,000. I think $170 in tickets out to win it.

Rough day, yesterday I drive PHX>Pahrump, delivered 7 patients, rained all night, did 3 more stops in Pahrump and then 11 in Vegas.
Called on one patient, and contact point was the husband, the 4 million dollar Condo was pretty badass… the view and amenities had me hankering to be adopted.
He has a Prevost for sale if anyone is interested, he is done with driving it.

Of course, now that we are talking about an after tax sum of about $600,000,000, anything could happen. I will have to keep an eye on them....
