My views on the right home defense weapon have varied over the years. For many decades it was my Winchester Model 1897. Then a Ruger Mini-14. Recently, I have settled on this Browning variant. I hope my permit application goes through! I have an ex LAPD model 97 handy actually have 4 97s but only one is a true riot gun 1924.

A Lewis would have been cool. If you really want a 1917, John, they go for upwards of $30k.

Do you still have your 97?

It was marked "California State Detentions Bureau". If Nate Posner of the San Francisco Gun Exchange said it was formerly at "Q", I am not disputing him. He was a credible guy. BTW, he was the gun shop proprietor who "arrested" two Commie Russian agents from the Soviet Counsel Office attempting to purchase a Mainhardt Rocket Pistol at his store. He held them at gunpoint for the SFPD and FBI. Robert Mainhardt's ill fated gun business was located in the SF Bay Area. BTW, I went to highschool with his daughter.

I’m betting that the ease of plausible counterfeits makes such guns almost worthless without fool-proof documentary provenance.

I’m betting that the ease of plausible counterfeits makes such guns almost worthless without fool-proof documentary provenance. Sadly that is a problem nowadays. When I purchased my Model 1897 Winchester in 1970, it was not something which happened often. Especially since the seller advertised the sale in the local newspapers. East to trace back then.

I hear you.
I went ahead and exercised the option for the M1 and carbine ammo. I do not “need” it, but I doubt the prices can be matched unless one reloads.
In the future I will, but for now, but purchasing is easier than chasing components and there is the time issue.
If I lived near Anniston Ala., I would certainly exercise the will call option.

My carbine is getting so darned collelctor-valuable I’m leery to shoot it a lot. And when I do I only use my HP handloads.
When you get your carbine ammo you should ship it to me for verification. 🙄

Now if I lived out on the plains, I might feel different about that!😂

Years ago, our local Congressman, a good Republican and Marine officer combat veteran of Korea, advised all senior citizens to arm themselves with one. Good advice.

Winchester is bringing back a version of the 1897 Trench gun. It's made in Korea, but it's affordable.

Darn shame I do not have the '03 Springfield bayonet any more. Good to have handy. I have a Garand bayonet, wonder if that might fit. Anyway, it will likely cost more than I care to spend but good to know. Let us hope they left the slam fire capability in place, eh?

Sadly, the new one doesn't have the bayonet mount. DRAT!!! Gunbroker has a few with decent prices on some replicas. Cimarron is supposed to be coming out with a replica but I haven't heard anything else. I doubt that one could be manufactured in the USA because of the design. Probably the most unsafe trigger ever put on a shotgun, but not an unsafe gun. I had a chance to examine one my friend had over his fireplace. It belonged to his grandfather and it wasn't a Trench Gun. It's ingenious how it's made, the smooth and easy takedown and all. That said, I don't think that I would want one. There are better shotguns for hunting and home defense and bayonets are obsolete.

Surprised with the well not sure how popular it is now as I haven’t done it in over a decade but with cowboy action shooting no one made a clone of them for that. Maybe they did and I just didn’t know about it. Welp after a quick google search it appears at one time norinco made a copy that was imported.

Yeah, Norinco was making a lot of good cheap guns, probably with slave labor. Same with Russia. Because of politics we don't get super strong Norinco 1911 and we get to pay a thousand dollars for an AK while the rest of the world pays $50. I have a Norinco SKS from back when we were relatively friendly.
