Zarnicky studying English as second language. Is very difficult. English is crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant, no ham in hamburger, and no apple or pine in pineapple. English muffins not invented in England. French fries not invented in France. Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads not sweet and are meat meat.
You taking English for granted but Zarnicky exploring and finding that quicksand can working slowly, boxing rings are square and Guinea pig not from Guinea and not pig. Why writers write but fingers not fing, grocers don't groce and hamsters don't ham? If plural of tooth is teeth why plural of booth not beeth? One goose to geese, so one moose, two meese? If teachers taught, why preachers not praught? If vegetarian eating vegetables, what a humanitarian eating?
Zarnicky thinking all English speakers should be sent to Siberia. There they having asylum for verbally insane. In Canada and US, people having noses that run and feet that smell.
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be same thing while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?
It crazy language! How can house burn up as it burns down? How you filling in form by filling form out?
How can alarm go off by going on? When stars are out, they visible but when lights are out, they invisible. Why “Buick” not rhyming with “quick”?
Teacher giving Zarnicky homework. I not knowing how to explaining sentences she giving me.
Here is small example. Please helping Zarnicky explain.
1> The bandage was wound around the wound.
2> The farm was used to produce produce.
3> The dump was so full that it had to refuse refuse.
Is many more examples but Zanricky starting with these 3.
I think I go smoke pipe now.

Considering phonetically doesn’t even start with an f and ironically, the two o’s in cooperate insist on having different sounds, you’re in for a long, hard ride.

English is the most powerful language in the world, partly because it has been and is a skillful thief from other tongues. French, Spanish, German, Italian, et al will cry foul but none of them have the breadth, depth, and flexibility of English. But it is damned hard to learn as an adult. I am always very impressed when an Oriental manages it with style and grace. And it still boggles the mind to know that Joseph Conrad began the study of English at the age of 21 I believe it was. Amazing. Must have been the fact that he was a pipe-smoker.

Ah, I see, now. He was born and grew up in what was Ukraine at the time, Poland having been divvied up among its three imperial neighbors. Ethnically and linguistically, though, he was Polish.

I remember listing to Conrad as Marshall Dillon on the armed forces radio network when we lived in Germany, when I found out about James Arness on TV, I thought him an imposter… grew on me though. Trivia: James Arness and Peter Graves were brothers.

Yes I am!
Missed the Joseph, focused on Conrad.
Not familiar with Joseph.
Edit: just checked… Joseph and Bob are contemporaries, so that explains it.

Yes, we enjoyed many bowls together. Some were tobacco. Charlie, you need to read HEART OF DARKNESS. It will stay with you. LORD JIM is another. Careful though— it’s easy to become a Conrad junky.

Beats hell out of learning Welsh (he said while trying to calculate the pronunciations of names in The Mabinogion). I read a whole series of books set in Wales a few years ago. I was doing pretty good with the place names by the 15th book. Don't ask me now.

Waiting in line at the drugstore in Atlanta, I picked up the latest Kathy Reichs book. These books were what the TV series "Bones" was based on. I read a couple of pages and put it back with prejudice. Not a style I can handle.

Beats hell out of learning Welsh (he said while trying to calculate the pronunciations of names in The Mabinogion). I read the Mabinigion in college. Names drove me crazy so I scribbled into the margins English name abbreviations for each name I couldn't pronounce. Prydri=Joe, Gwyned=Nancy, etc. My idea of humor. I'd probably be hung by the yardarm in Wales.
