Okay, I know it can't be good for me, because I like the taste, and it's not hard to find. Two local supermarkets around here have their own brands at under three bucks a tin, while the brand names like Hormel and Libby fetch almost seven dollars , but for the life of me, I can't tell any difference. On a seeded roll, with tomato and lettuce, and a dash of Hellmans, it makes a heck of a lunch, and one tin will feed five starving lumberjacks. Like smoking, I figure this is one of those things that will get you in the end, so we limit ourselves to a tin a month when the fresh tomatoes are in season, and even less in the colder months. I'd even make my own corn beef hash, but the wife calls that dog food, and wont come to the table if I fix it...so just a sandwich now and then Are we the only ones who keep a few tins in the pantry? Do any of you guys enjoy this old wartime classic? Or should I sneak off to some remote tailgate, with my lowly corn beef sandwich?

Love the stuff. I have a few cans of Hereford Brand Lower Sodium Corned Beef on the shelf. Next to an Australian brand which I also enjoy. The Hereford lower salt can be ordered from Amazon as it is seldom seen in stores here.

Lunch was an uncured all beef knockwurst in sauerkraut with extra Turkish made stuffed cabbage rolls. Mashed potatoes on the side.

I buy the corned beef hash for my son and myself. Wife won't touch it. My son eats it plain, while I require at least one poached egg.

I eat at Lou’s diner on Decatur Blvd. in Vegas when I can, a hole on the wall since 1965. They offer the homemade CBH or the canned CBH, I take the latter rather than the former because of familiarity… I need to be a risk taker, will check in next time. Their food is phenomenal, way off the strip but the locals know it well. maps.app.goo.gl/aLDrotX6RgaX7HYy6?g_st=ic

Around here, their food has always been very good, but the service can be hit or miss but good service seems to be a thing of the past these days, to the point that a nice smile, or a friendly greeting is uncommon, and I mean everywhere, not just C.B.

I don't think that the Cracker Barrel down here has CBH. The only restaurant I've ever had it in was Katzs deli and it was nothing like the canned stuff I like. Really very greasy.

) The local store has leg quarters for $0.50/lb. But the freezer is full. That sure looks good.

My wife spoils me every now and then with Corned Beef Hash in a can. I've not found just tinned corned beef at a price I can justify since I'm pretty much the only member of my household who eats it. I'll have to browse the supermarket to see if they have a store brand that is less costly.

I was put off corned beef when I read the ingredients: Cooked beef, beef, water, salt, sugar, sodium nitrate.
What's that second one again? Ew. Not quite as bad as when I found out what 'mechanically separated' meant.

I haven't tried Aldi, but the nearest one is 60 miles away. The other store brands I've tried are more like cheap dog food.

Not quite as bad as when I found out what 'mechanically separated' meant. A good look and the back of most can foods will have you sprinting to the produce and fresh meat sections of your markets. In the early seventies, I worked for Safeway...the can veggie section ran the from one end of the store to the other...we had an older gent, who's only job was to remove the cardboard trays as the emptied out...we had to tray-pack just to keep up. Today the can food section is rarely more that 12 feet, and tray-packing is a thing of the past. When I was a kid, every store I worked in had some old guy, on the sidewalk outside, telling everybody how great things used to be...I swore I'd never become that guy ...look what happened.

When my son was in Cub Scouts, we were involved in scouting for food. He was going door to door to get donations for less fortunate people. There was a tin of canned pork, and when I read the ingredients, it was “partially defatted pork fatty tissue.”
Yummy! 😀

I should have known someone would bring up potted meat...I think it came about when a mistake was made, and they needed something to fit in those small cans. My better half, who calls corn beef DOG FOOD, will pile potted meat on a cracker and call it good. I don't know about Libby, but when we hunted, a lifetime ago, my pop always had a can of Armor PM in his hunting coat, and crackers in the truck...it tasted like mud and very cheap bologna...then, sometime in the last decade, I think, Armor began to fill the potted meat cans with something they had once called Deviled Spam, and the Deviled Spam label went away...this was a vast improvement in flavor, but here again, don't read the label.

I think it was called deviled ham, not spam.
“Deviled ham, a taste of Hell”
Would be an appropriate ad.

Breakfast of poached eggs on Black pudding, one Lincolnshire Chipolata sausage and toast. Lotsa coffee. Heading out for a days work on the irrigation system which includes wading. Waiting for the day to warm. Not a long wait it seems.
