On the morning of September 6th, my wife sat me down here in the kitchen and told me that the spot on her right lung is cancer, and that her next P.E.T. scan would tell us how bad and if it was confined to the lung. Last week, before she left on a yearly, sisters trip to The Outer Banks, she took her older sister{ a retired R.N.} along to hear details from the doctor. two small masses in the right upper lung, together they equal the size of an almond...and even tho their faces were drawn and their eyes red and weepy when they gave me that news, they say it's too soon to speak of cancer...I think they're making light of it, to keep me sane while I'm alone for 10 or 12 days. Both my wife and her sister continue to smoke, and glare at me when I speak of their madness, and " what about all those pipes?" they say, and I reply that if they both embraced the pipe when I asked them to, years ago, they'd both be much better off...then I offered to pack up my pipes and quit, if she would quit...more glares. I was asked to keep it all under wraps , but the rest of the sisters got the news on Sunday ,so I'm laying it out there for my friends here at the patch. A team of four is working now to see how best to go from here. So I'm asking for prayers for the doctor's wisdom and for God's blessing. I've long forgotten how to live without my wife. May the Lord bless you and yours.

Once again, thanks for thinking of us. As of today, with surgery just around the corner, smoking continues. Patches remain unopened, and three bags of hard candy will most likely get handed out at the end of the month, to kids who are too young to smoke...I guess the chips will fall where they may. I can't fight this fight for her, and just standing on the sideline leaves me feeling very old and helpless.

My late older brother smoked even with COPD and being on oxygen right up to his fatal heart attack. There was nothing that anyone could say or do to get him to quit. In that, we are powerless over other people. We can only pray, stay by a loved one's side, and provide love and support.

Thanks to all of you who followed along on this journey . This morning my wife had 3/4 of the upper portion of her left lung removed, plus some of the surrounding tissue. The doctor seems to think it all went very well, but the lab report wont be in until tomorrow. At the moment she is loaded with pain meds, so she's resting, but still a bit uneasy. For I time she was awake, and came out with " Oh me " and then "Oh my"...then she said she could eat a horse, and later, " I could eat a whole bear "...they wont let her have anything, but it sounds like animal crackers might be a good idea for tomorrow. Looks like I'll be on my own for four or five days, just me and the puppies.

Not yet anyway...when we got to the hospital she was sitting up watching football. In the bag we carried, there were her specks, her dentures, her slippers, and most important a decanter of hot coffee, from home, complete with sweet & low, and hazelnut creamer, plus two Diet Cokes for later...everything you'd expect in a care package. She was a much happier camper today, than yesterday, but she did say some things that were entirely off, like "Did yall get the photos I sent of Buster and Sandy on the bed?" The dogs are minding there business at home...and later "does Linda pump air into her pies to cool them down? " They disconnected the " happy button" on her I.V. , so maybe her thoughts will be less twisted tomorrow. looking at the big picture, all is well...carry on, Herb.

You and the puppers making it alright? When I left for the hospital this morning, I left Sandy outside...with her best friend inside, along with the food and water bowls, plus her special blanket, I got a hearty piece of her mind when I got home.

Yes indeed, if Sharon or one of her five sisters fail to keep me straight, you can bet that pointed eared Shiba-inu wont let too much slip by.

Good news from the Hospital...my wife called early this morning to say she's coming home today...I then called her older sister, the retired R.N. of the family, and she said the chest tube comes out this morning, and if the lung remains inflated, she'll get out today.
I'm told that after our chat with the hospital staff yesterday, some adjustments were made in Sharon's meds, and that she slept the night through and is more like herself today. She did indeed sound greatly improved when I spoke with her.
