Not the English, but I think I tried the Whiskey one time...only one time, that might be a clue. Check out some reviews to see if it still sounds good, but for what it retails for you might try a 16 oz bag of "Best of the Rest English" at P&C...that could end up being a real adventure, and a lesson for us all...if you're willing to take one for the team that is.

Super Value seems the be the floor sweepings of the tobacco industry, you can smoke pretty cheap, like you can drive cheap in a 1985 Ford Fairmont with 700,000 miles and a homeless dude named “Buzz” in the back seat…. It may get you there, but the journey wont be pleasant..

I've always heard good things about SV. The "Best of the Rest" claims to be bench sweepings. If I smoked enough to need a cheap tobacco, I would try both. BOTR comes in regular and aro.

I've haven't the B.O.T.R. aro, or English, it sounds like a crap shoot, and as much as I love a good crap-shoot, I just never went for it. When Jack Peterson sold off Sterling Tobacco I got a fifteen dollar lb of "Bargain Blend", and I've enjoyed every bowl; still have a small amount. It's very good quality leaf{ dark burleys, brown Virginias, and black cavendish, with a very light blueberry note, but still, somewhere in the background, there's a hint of something English going on...crazy, but it grew on me really fast. Hope you have the same good luck.

I guess I always had the impression that SV is the brand people meant when they talked about rolling tobacco getting repackaged as pipe tobacco just to avoid the cigarette regs.

Someone is certainly buying the stuff, the walls of some local smoke shops are lined with it.

I emailed Sutliff to find out about the contents of Super Value English Mixture.
Here's the return email I received, just one day later, after my inquiry.
Hi Geoffry,
Our Super Value English Mixture contains the following:
Latakia, Burley, Virginia, Perique, Turkish and our proprietary casing formula and nothing artificial for a smokey flavor, this comes from the Latakia in the blend, as with all English tobaccos.
Best Regards,
Jeremy
-Great customer service so far. I will review the blend shortly after I receive it. FYI, Super Value is under Sutliff which is of course owned by Mac Baren.

I know my remarks might have come across as smart alecky and snobbish on the SV line…. Meant in humor, not in offense. Tastes are subjective, and “smoke what you like, and like what you smoke” should be what directs our interests, and purchases.
I hope that your experience and exceeds your expectations….Frankly, I am envious of those that are content with codger blends, you can smoke more economically than I can.

The mail came in late last night. Of course I had to smell the SV pouch before putting it away for my smoke test today. The tobacco, upon arrival, was of perfect humidity. The pouch aroma was strongly of sour burley and Turkish. Today, the blend packed well, lit well and produced a good amount of dense white smoke. There was not a great deal of Latakia, which was acceptable, but not quite what I had hoped for. The Virginias offered some mild haylike aroma and taste. The perique seemed to be of a mildly dark fruit flavor. The Latakia gave a slightly smokey contribution. The Burley added a fullness to the smoke. The Turkish was lightly floral but very enjoyable. I was quite pleased, especially for $5 a pouch. It might seem minor, but the pouch had no adhesive to keep the seal. This seal is seen with Captain black, Sir Walter Raleigh and other pouched brands. The remainder of this tobacco has been stored in a Ball jar. I would purchase this tobacco again...not just because of the price, but it's actually nice, quite good, I like it. All in all a positive experience. I'm quite pleased.

Hey, thanks for you review. You might also enjoy Sutliff's Fox and Hound...back in the days when most everything from Sutliff was heavy with black Cavendish, Fox and Hound was a refreshing change, with a nice, mild English profile.

“ the pouch had no adhesive to keep the seal. ”
A good reason to give it a press test before purchase, some stores move a lot of Super Value, some may be there quite awhile.
Sometimes rectangular tins are not vacuum sealed, especially when it comes to seasonal blends like Peterson Christmas blends. I have only seen it with aromatics, and as the Europeans seem to be less prone to cellar deep, and smoke the seasonal blends in season may be the reason.

Nice work Geoff! When it comes to matters of taste, it's nice to have a simple option you don't have to analyze or contemplate that just gets the job done - like an old book you've read a number of times or a go to table wine.

I bought a pound of the BOTR in 2015. Money was tight and I figured this would last me until I could afford better baccy. And it did, I still have about 1/2 pound in jars mellowing. I smoke this when things get tight, like now, and it gets the nicotine need satisfied. As a regular all day smoke I think not. But, as need arrises it's OK. I bought a lot quantity of various tobaccos from a member here that included some Super Value in it. I have had only one bowl from it and to be honest I can't remember what it tasted like.
I've managed to put about 10 tins in the cellar of quality tobaccos and today I promised myself to pop a tin of Presbyterian, my best favorite to celebrate the New Year!

Like you, My plan was to pop something special for New Year's day. I had my eye on an old tin of F.M.O.T. T., that looks to be busting at the seams, but I was to sick to even enjoy Carter Hall, I'll get around to it someday.

Hi and thank you for thinking of me, Urb. I'm recovering from a nasty little infection and just starting to feel better. No pipes yet for me and the TV in my Bedroom went zonky/dead on me...so my cell is keeping me occupied. Be well, -Obs

Hope you’re feeling better, the flu is going around something fierce lately. Myself and everyone around me have been sick over the course of the past two months.
I have not tried Sutliff’s line of Super Value blends, however, I have enjoyed Lane’s line of Smoker’s Pride blends. Smoker’s Pride Rich Taste in the red bag is great. Mellow taste is great if you’re not looking for the full nutty burley/VA combo that Rich Taste offers. They also have a good whiskey, natural blend, cavendish and flavored mixtures to suit all tastes. A good bang for the buck on those.
SmokingPipes also offer the same deal as Pipes&Cigars “Best of the Rest” but they call their leftovers mixtures Grand Croupier, and those can be had for cheap in English, aromatic, and Va/burley mixtures as well. They seem to have went up a few bucks a pound with everything else in the past 5 years, however for $19.73 for a full pound, it’s still a steal.

I forgot to mention, if you’re looking for a value bulk English blend from Sutliff, give their Balkan Sobranie 759 match (black) or Balkan Sobranie (white) match a try. I can vouch for the Sobranie 759 as being a reasonably priced Balkan from them with enough latakia in there.
