Coffee, strong, black, and full bodied. Roasted just right and ground right before brewing. Now, I just need three more and I should be ready to face the day.

Last of the Elijah Craig Small Batch. Love me some Elijah Craig. A good friend, now some years gone, introduced me to it (not the small batch, as I recall) long ago when we were getting together from time to time to make some music. I enjoy it now for its own sake and also in his memory.

This morning, my second cup of coffee. One pod of Starbucks Sumatra blend, one of Bustelo, brewed as strong as the workplace Keurig will brew it, which I'm happy to say is pretty darn strong.
I subscribe to the apocryphal Turkish proverb (have heard from some Turks that the description of the coffee is right but it's not their proverb), "Coffee should be black as hell, strong as death, and sweet as love." Except since I don't use any sugar I have to go with the country & western version, "... bitter as love."
(Since it's Pączki Day, I'll also mention the Polish version I just learned: "black as the devil, sweet as a stolen kiss." Or Talleyrand!: “Black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love.” Yes, I've gone down a rabbit hole here.)
Last night, Bell's Kalamazoo Stout. Bell's Brewery always seems to get it right. If any of our Michigan crew are beer lovers, you know what I mean. Wonderful stout; I think I like it better than Guinness, though to be fair I've never had the chance to go to Ireland and taste that venerable brew nearer its source.

Kalamazoo Stout is good stuff. Just had some recently. I like a lot of Bell's offerings. I think they were among my first craft beers back in the mid-80s.

A small pour of the Blanton's last night. It's definitely a nice spirit and I'm glad to have tried it. However, I can't say it's significantly better than others at twice their price.

Blanton's is a classic case of a little bit of scarcity plus FOMO driving up interest and prices on a product that isn't a particularly premium product. Blanton's is good whiskey. It used to be my main, go-to bourbon, but there's nothing about it that's really super-premium (other than the price, now).

Cigars are another great example. A $15 cigar is better, usually, than an $8 cigar but once you get past that price point the difference is negligible.

McClelland and Esoterica blends are in the same boat. I liked some of them. I liked Dunbar a lot, in fact. But they weren't/aren't head-and-shoulders better than everything else. They're just, for different reasons, hard to get.

Son picked up 2 French quarts of store brand tonic water. I had a taste and it was weak and two sweet, so I dumped in a couple of shots of Bombay Sapphire. Funny how 2 bad ingredients can make a pretty serious drink. I need to get a bottle of Tanqueray before summer, and some of that Indian tonic water.
