While in a group pipe conversation a week and a half ago, the topic of Parker pipes came up. I had casually mentioned in passing that I was watching for one as I didn’t have one in my English pipe collection, yet. In the mail today, a small box arrived from a friend who was in the conversation. I was quite surprised to open it and find inside a 1950 Parker Super BriarBark shape 35 Apple in excellent condition. 😎 For anyone not familiar with Parker pipes, they were a Dunhill sub-brand which everyone I’ve talked to says smokes as good as Dunhill pipes.

I ordered five churchwarden stems and a $150 chamber bit from Vermont Freehand. The package showed up just as shown in the photo, three stems and no chamber bit. I emailed and the first response I got, exact quote: “Sorry, not our problem. The best I can do is sell you another bit and two stems”. I responded that my responsibility as the buyer was to pay, which I did. Your responsibility is to get me the merchandise. He responded “You should have bought insurance, not my problem”. I responded that insurance covers the seller’s liability to deliver the items, not the buyer’s. Plus the way you shipped it came with $100 insurance anyway, you obviously didn’t feel the need to protect yourself for the difference, which is not my problem. Are you going to make this right? He responded “F**k off”. Yes, exact words. The only thing he’s done since is block me on instagram. What makes this even crazier is I bought over $1,000.00 worth of things from them the previous month. I’m rather upset about this.

Is this the owner/manager, or just some dude that works there?

Wow...what a horrible reply! I have only heard good things about Steve Norse, if it was an employee he should be fired, if Steve sent them replies...wow!

Might have to spend my money elsewhere.

I guess you are small potatoes to him, not worth the bother, and freight claims are not to be bothered with. From his Facebook posted 23 hours ago. 25 bags of Italian Manno briar just arrived!! That’s about 4,350 blocks If he only received half his order and Mimo told him to pound sand on a prepaid order, he would see things differently. Pretty sure that if what happened to you happened to me, AMEX would not hesitate to reverse the charges.

Steve has no employees. He is a one man operation.
I once ordered a few pre-drilled blocks from him. He drills the blocks and fits a stem. The blocks were all given the same stem. Unfortunately, in all cases, the stem for the stummel that would most likely come out of the block were mismatches. Ok, annoying but I can fit more appropriate stems, um, also bought from Steve… Then in the chamber wall of one of the blocks, there is an obvious sand pit. A couple of seconds of exploration with a dental pick revealed the "sand pit" to just be the edge of a good sized void. A simple glance at the block after drilling should have lead to a rapid QA rejection. I contacted Steve assuming a simple mistake with the expectation of him replacing the block. His response was along the lines of briar is a natural material and flaws happen. He didn’t want to listen to the common sense of the flaw was obvious upon drilling before I started removing any material. I get it if it would have been a flaw inside the wood, but when you’re offering a pre-drilled block, I expect it to pass a basic visual inspection with no obvious bowl flaws.

I don't think I'll plan on doing any business with Vermont Freehand. I bought a Forever Stem from there but, given the owner's attitude, I don't think that he really ever needs another order ever again.

He bought out all of Pipe Smokers Emporium based in PHX when they retired, about the same time that I took back up smoking the pipe. They had a stellar reputation and as I have heard, had workshops for anyone interested.
Lack of competition breeds this type of attitude with some.

There’s either Raw Krafted (Premel) or Tim West for supplies.

There’s either Raw Krafted (Premel) or Tim West for supplies. Both are good sources for briar, less so for vulcanite stem blanks.

15 pouches of half and half heading this way...yeah I'm stocking up. Should be here in a week or so. Tobaccopipes.com has been very reliable for me. It's 70 something degrees here in the northwest Houston area. The rain is coming down and I can see our backyard and beyond it, the lake, while the thunder claps. I just found out that my 15 pouches of half and half will be here tomorrow afternoon. It's a very comfortable day, warm in the house and I feel compelled to say a prayer for those who don't have life nearly as well as I.

Full rivers and bayous though. Very content with our life. 72 is pretty amazing for this time of year.

Hey yall I'm considering ordering some cornell and diehl tins off of smokingpipes.com and since I'm new to this I was wondering if yall had any good recommendations for blends to try out. That’s a big question. Narrowing it down to a genre might help, (Burley, VaPer, English, etc.).
