I’ve thought about your question a bit and I can’t really come up with a definitive answer. On one hand, some of my favorite pipes are unsmoked and may never be smoked by me. On the other, ones I smoke that are favorites occur to me as a group, one isn’t more of a favorite than another. I just can’t wrap my head around just one I would label “the best” without some qualification as to value, smoking quality, artistry, history, etc. none check all of those boxes completely. In fact as far as favorites I use, I tend to only rank them by smoking quality and how much I enjoy looking at them and holding them while I smoke them.
It could just be that I have too many pipes. There was a time when I only had one nice pipe and some cobs when I could have answered your question.

Same. Like it says in the little info box on the left of my comments, it’s too soon to tell. It may very well always be too soon. I have a handful I know will always give me a good smoke, feel good in the hand, and are comfy to clench.

I haven't got a favorite, either. Lots of decent pipes, some smoke better than others, while some look better than others. That also goes for the pipes I made and even my corncobs.

Wasn't happy with my post so I deleted it. I hope you don’t think I was trying to be evasive or critical in my comment, I really wasn’t trying to be. Maybe I didn’t really understand your question or maybe time and experience has just changed the way l look at some topics. I’m glad that you consistently ask the questions you do and post the topics you do. It’s refreshing to see actual discussion about pipes and tobaccos on this pipe and tobacco forum! 😃

What 😦 there was a question?? Seriously though, I agree with Ted and Pete. I don’t have any one favorite pipe that ticks all the boxes, but shape and finish kind of bring me to a selection when I make the choice to smoke it. Does any of that make sense?

The question, more or less, was what's your favorite pipe to smoke?

Since the original post is lost, I’d be interested in a different spin on it. Do you folks prefer shapes that adhere to the classics, or freehand and organic shapes?
For myself, I’m a traditional kinda smoker.

I'm definitely a traditional shapes guy. I've got a freehand or 3, but my collection is dominated by the classics.

A check of ye olde spreadsheet says I've got 19 apples, call it 40 billiards (chimneys, Canadians, Liverpools, etc.), 10 Dublins, 7 pots, and 9 princes (yeah, I thought I had more of those, too). That's by far the bulk of the collection.

I have always admired those who can color within the lines and do it well. I always imagined a "freehand" was the answer to an inferior hunk of briar.

This has always been the pipe against which all others were judged. It is a Willmer AA straight grain that I bought in the 1980s. I think the thick walls of the pipe help make for a cool smoke, but I'm not sure about that. I really wish I knew why it smokes so well.

In my minds eye, it is about the history...I have some pipes that were produced later that are incredible smokers, but there is something about Pipes from the 1800's... they have a story to tell, I wish that I could get them to share their stories. 1850 or so... May 18 1864... Chales Maas 1895 or so.

My dad always smoked traditional shapes. I’d follow him into old pipe shops in the malls around here, and admire the pipes and loved when he’d smoke an old clay tavern pipe he picked up on a family trip up to Plymouth. when I picked up the pipe the old man had been resting for 5 years. I opened a tin and smelled it, and he was around. but my tastes are different than his, and we have the internet and…we’ll times are different now

I hear you...I wish I had gotten one of my Grandpa Trujillo's pipes upon his passing...they would have been Medico or Grabow, but I wish I had a few.

I have eight of those out on display and several others that are candidates for some rethinking or the firepit. Several others were gifts.

I'm getting to a point where I pick a pipe based on the tobacco to be smoked; it mostly comes down to the tobacco's cut and expected length of smoke but sometimes it just feels like a certain tobacco goes with a certain pipe.
