My old Ford F-250 Superduty 7.3 PSD, bought new by me in 1999 has a problem. It seems that back in the year 2000, I asked a local mechanic of notable repute to change the front hubs from the Ford vacuum system to manual as in Warn Locking Hubs. It now appears the job was not done quite right. The vacuum system and the Warn Hubs did not work properly together and the front axels were not properly engaged in 4 WD over the years. The result was not much power getting to the front wheels which explains why I had so much trouble in the snow getting stuck. Worse, the improper meshing of gears resulted in wear of the hubs and wheel bearings. So, I have to take it to the Ford Dealer shop in Alamosa CO to rebuild the the front 4WD. It has to go to Ford as the vacuum system is proprietary and parts are not available to independent mechanics. This will be a costly repair but needs to be done. The damage to date means that even in 2WD, damage is furthered. Double Drat!!

Well, shite. That does sound expensive. Is it gonna be alright to get you to and from the docs in the meantime?

Good thing that you are a wealthy rancher!
No that sucks!
It really sucks when you gave due diligence, and sent work to a "reputable" mechanic, only to find out years later it was not done right...still sucks.

Sadly not. Should not be driven until repaired. Cripes. How long will it take? You got other arrangements? Hard to say. My appointment with the Ford Dealer Service Dept is for next Thursday. Once they have the parts, it should take all that long. I might be able drive my old Landcruiser into Taos for the MD appointments the following week. No windshield wipers owing to the failure of a cheap plastic part no longer available. I might be able to work a McGiver Fix on it.

I have not used them, but have referred others and the results have been great.

I kept a pair of water pump pliers with plastic over the teeth to make it easy. Who thought it was a good idea to add vacuum to the hubs on a 4WD pickup?

Those would be the people who got tired of getting out to lock in the hubs.

When I first worked on one with vacuum wipers, I thought what genius thought this was a good idea. Haven't repaired a windshield wiper motor since, so I don't know what they are using. Just happy they work.

John I can feel your pain. I have a VW Jetta that has a signal light out. I replaced the bulb a couple of times, but, it needs a new light assy in order to correct the problem. To replace the assy I first have to remove part of the grill, loosen the LT fender from the body and remove the bumper. Like what RonV said, who thought this was a good idea? What should be a normal $25-50 repair will be well in excess of $300 for a darn signal light.... Guess who won't be signaling a LT turn any time soon...

When you stomped on the gas they came to a stand still .

I Googled the current vacuum situation and I discovered that it's mostly just the heater flap and power brakes now. I did discover a horror called a vacuum fuel pump. No longer used I think.

Did you possibly have added a Holley Double-pumper? 😁 Whoa, whoa. His sex life is not relevant here. No sex, again. It was a carburetor that, when you stepped on it, all the vacuum went away. Took a big, hungry engine not to bog.

My dad had an old Caddy with the big fins… it had power windows, kinda cool felt like Batfink’s car.
The bad part, the power windows were vacuum operated, and they never worked.
We rode around in a terrarium in the sweaty days of summer, as we had no A/C either.

They were doing great with electric motors, until they started coating the wires with squirrel food.

Trico made a rebuild kits for the vacuum wiper motors and yes there is more than one model. As for the hubs even with the warn hubs there are still a bunch of Ford only parts located in the hub thrust washes and what not.

The first time I pressed on the gas, it left the ground. In '64 the Scout was equipped with a 4 cylinder, overhead valve engine mated to a three speed transmission. The locking hubs in front were very finicky often requiring driving in reverse to lock. Good little truck. We hauled a horse trailer on the highways with it.

My 96 horsepower Isuzu Trooper hauled my 18' Searay 90 miles one way to the lake every weekend at 90mph. The V8 was overkill in the Scout.
