There are a number of places around the country where one can rent licensed machine guns for time on the range. I found such a place in Texas, between Austin and Huston. So, I am thinking about a winter trip down there. Fulfill the life time wish to handle and shoot the BAR, M1928 Thompson, the M2 Grease Gun, and maybe the M2 Carbine. They also have plenty of belt feeders but I am mostly interested in the above. Also a chance to enjoy real Texas barbeque and maybe work my way further east to check on Old Ron? Anyway it is a thought and we shall see. When one has Cancer and is one Chemo it helps to have a dream for the future.

That sounds like a fun trip, John, except for the part about visiting Ron.

A M240 would look good mounted in the back your Ford you could use it on those Texans who want to snow ski.

Full auto is a lotof fun, but putting 600 rounds per minute can be pricey…3 round bursts can help.😉

You will probably need at least 500 bucks for the ammo too. What's the name of the range?

I did a search and one was on the south side of Austin, and one was near Grapevine, close to Dallas.

Either of them would have been inexpensive to purchase prior to the 1984, either one now is going to cost upwards of 20K (last time I checked years ago) As the song says…” Regrets, I have a few”

It is a shame that we do not have the ability to own a SAW249, I have no problem with going the NFA route, just sad...

I had enough medical problems and limitations I would have spent my enlistment doing something like scrubbing garbage cans. Fortunately, the lottery was in effect when I turned 18 and I drew a high number. So, no letter from my Uncle Sam. Still, based on who I am now, I would have enlisted even if it meant scrubbing garbage cans or some other menial MOS. It is important for youths to serve in one of the branches. I missed out on that and will always regret it.

I missed out on that and will always regret it. I agree that some kind of service would be a good thing. I don't think Vietnam was a good use of our country's resources. I respect and honor those who went. Many of my friends volunteered and several others were drafted. I was in college when the lottery went through. My best friend was the first winner in the lottery, I was 264. I wasn't afraid to fight, but I wouldn't willingly lay down my life for a country on the other side of the world. Others saw it differently. Some of the guys I went to high school with just wanted to fight. One volunteered, became a sniper and served 4 tours, later becoming a Houston cop. Another was my Scoutmaster's oldest son. He was one of the few surviving helicopter pilots. I spoke to him and my friend who was in the Flying Piss Corp this morning. They are happy for me. Heinline thought that some kind of civic service should be mandatory for citizenship, but he also believed in many kinds of service. I knew a lot of girls from my school went into the Peace Corp. I believe young people want to serve in a positive way if they get the chance.

Glad I was too young for Vietnam.
I have the highest respect for those that served, saddened for those that made the ultimate sacrifice, disgusted by those that spit on returning servicemen, and pretty much hate those that stupidly engineered that war. My father’s 3 tours fundamentally changed our family, not for the good. Besides that, the war was a Clusterf@&$?.
Those that spit on returning servicemen… had they did it to my dad, it would probably be their last act.

Of course it only happened because of the news, so there's that. I am pretty sure it was mostly a West Coast thing.

I was in Sf and Berkeley in the late '60s and 1970. Never once did I see anyone spit on any soldier, sailor, airman, or Marine. The standard protocol was to hand them a beer and maybe a doobie. I think the spitting thing is propaganda by certain right wing elements seeking to divide us.
