A lovely obit for a lovely man.
(I guess I was monitoring the wrong site. I was looking at Batavia News Online.)

Fellas, I am sorry to report that Ed passed away in October. Bob from Batavia just called me. Damn it. I was afraid of that. Sad news.

In a care package some of us sent him a few years ago, I included a pipe I owned but hadn't smoked yet. A Stanwell freehand. It'd be nice to get it back as a keepsake. Probably no chance of that, though.

Ed was down one day, thought we thought he was slow, PMed him and told him I thought he was the smartest one of us, he replied happy, of my thoughts. I liked him a lot.

His seniority will never be surpassed, even if some of us live to an older age.
You could not find a more humble creature, he spoke of his father’s accomplishments, downplayed his because of learning disabilities, but as a railroad worker he stands tall at building America through an age where railroading played a key role.
If there is a Valhalla for pipe smokers, Ed is holding court!
Really nice that his obit mentioned the patch, and really nice of Scott to put in the legwork!
A Lataholic to the bone!
If we can find out his birthdate it would be fitting to put it on the forum calendar… load a bowl of English, and puff like a locomotive!
Thanks again Scott! Looking forward to hearing stories about Ed.

It's one of those things that would be nice to have on the mantelpiece if I had it, but I don't want anyone to go to a lot of trouble for it.
Do thank Bob for us, though, when you see him. It's very cool that you two are going to meet up.

Don't let anyone tell you internet relationships are less real than those formed face to face; I broke down as I read Ed's obit, and I know I'm not the only one. He was a giant ripple in the pond we call The Briar Patch, and I always marveled at the energy a man of his years could have. I'm glad the wondering is over, but this place will never be the same.
I'll be loading a bowl of Lancer's Slices and putting a match to it at 10:pm...R.I.P. Ed.

Sad News. We’ve been board buddies for a long time going back to the ASP days. We shared a love of larger pipes and Abingdon tobacco. He had a big bent Castello Epoca that I coveted. RIP Ed.

Hopping in here to ad my sympathies and great respect for our friend "gone west" Ed. Just received a text this morning from Ted (Gypo) with our pal's obit.
Although we hadn't conversed on the "Chat" recently, I, and others here, have had many an entertaining evening with "ol ed".
He was modest to a fault and rarely had anything bad to say about anyone.
He was a huge fan of Latakia. The Lattier the better.
Think I'll dig through my cellar this evening and try to find the Lattiest blend I have and raise a pipe.
Really good to see how many folks here were truly "our brothers keeper".
God Speed and God Bless you Ed.

I first met Ed on the Yahoo pipe forums, years ago. Ed was a fine man and a lover of stout stogies. We would email a bit but lost touch until I came here to this forum. It was great to see him again. Rest well, my brother. -Geoffry
