A few months ago STG bought Mac Baren who owns Sutliff. It has now been announced that both the Mac Baren factory in Denmark and the Sutliff factory in Va will be closed and production consolidated to the STG factories in Denmark.
While very disappointing, this is not unexpected considering this is what happened when STG bought Lane a few years ago.
If you have any top favorites made by either Mac Baren or Sutliff, I recommend buy, buy, buy. It could be discontinued or change as a result of the factory move. Besides the obvious potential impacts such as Presbyterian and Capstan from the Mac Baren factory, keep in mind that Sutliff makes a lot of other brands such as Seattle Pipe Club and Hearth and Home. Even though H&H is P&C which is also owned by STG, I wouldn't consider those blends as safe. When STG bought Lane, they discontinued all of Lane's tinned blends and only kept Captain Black, other OTCs, and the popular Lane bulk blends.

I like a lot of Sutliff blends and H&h. It seems like only Russ O's blends were the only ones that suffered from the government regs. I'm lucky to have more tobacco than I will ever be able to smoke. I hope your wife got some rest. Please thank her for her service.

There is just too much for me to follow lately. Didn’t Mac Baren buy tobaccopipes.com a while back, and do we really think that STG would discontinue Mac Baren? I was not aware that Mac Baren sold to STG. Last I knew, I thought Mac Baren was the one buying up other companies.
Sutliff just started redeeming themselves with all the newer tinned blends and all the newer rustica and Katerini and stoved series. (Birds of a Feather, Pipe Force, other crumble flake lines), now I wonder if they weren’t at NASPC this year due to the buyout. Are they really planning on closing the entire warehouse and factory altogether in the US? They have tons of cellared tobaccos and wholeleaf going back DECADES there.

Henry? Halberg was the driving force at MacB, as CEO he travelled the world sourcing leaf, he passed away and I am guessing no one in the family had any interest and wanted to cash in.
Per Jensen was let go about a year ago, but he collaborated with Sutliff on the birds blends… cannot remember if that was after he was let go.
A knowledgeable buddy commented today about STG:
“ They are making huge moves. They bought Alec Bradley cigars for $72.5 million. They keep Alec and Bradley on with the guarantee that the cigars would be made in the same facilities and sourced from the same tobacco growers.”

Wow! This is sad news. I’m glad I got to go the Sutliff factory and record there for memory sake. I feel bad for all the workers there who have been there for so many years showing their loyalty. Jeremy McKenna was really supportive of the pipe community. He even worked with me to create my own blend which they provided all the tobacco, tins, and labels. All I had to do was the recipe and got 100% of the proceeds. What other pipe company has ever done that? I really hope something changes for the good but it’s not looking that way if they are already closing factories. I even received all the remaining tins of my blend in the mail for me to sell on my own because they will no longer be able to sell them.

Maybe my memory is foggy but I thought he was the descendant himself of his grandfather that ran Mac Baren.

No he is the son of George Jensen pipe maker, Per grew up in the factory, and went on to work in the tobacco business. Just before being let go from MacBaren, they relocated him and his staff in Germany, and pulled the plug as they wanted to concentrate on other tobacco products. He came out with his own blending components about a year ago, I suspect that they came from Sutliff who he has collaborated with… he was working with Jeremy Reeves also.

Ah that sounds right. I’ve forgotten. What a turn of events, i’ve been wondering all night if I should put together MB and Sutliff orders.

Went through my cellar inventory. I'm set on Chatham Manor, Angler's Dream, Prince Andrew, and Deception Pass. Don’t really feel the need to pay a premium for more Capstan. Put an order in to SP for some more Presbyterian, Magnum Opus, and Hogshead,

The Mac Baren and Sutliff factories are shutting down. They said nothing about what might happen with warehouse stocks. It makes total sense to not have a tobacco factory in the US when you don’t already. Why deal with US regs? That’s pretty much why they shut down the Lane factory after buying them. The brands will continue but what blends are left will be made in the STG factory. Expect to see many blends be discontinued. Blends which remain have a chance of changing as a result of factory change. Sutliif had bought tobaccopipes.com in response to STG buying P&C.

Even if you do not smoke MacBaren, cellar and be a seller in a few years.
Like Gold, speculation can be rewarding. Both are commodities, no one expects you to sell gold at yesterdays prices.

Needles to say, she spent today resting up. She got re-elected as Township Clerk.

Likely the end of tobaccopipes.com and Cup of Joes. Isn't it Pipes & Cigars that's owned by STG?

I took advantage of tobaccopipes.com's 20% off sale and bought 5 pounds of Mocha Strips a few days ago when I first heard about it.

Really hoping this is an acquisition of growth where they continue to produce the majority of what’s already going.

Rarely if ever an acquisition results in maintaining the integrity of a brand, and STG seems to have a track record in that regard.

I’ve not tried that one, but it’s interesting they put “Made in Denmark” on that being a Sutliff blend. Was not aware the Denmark Mac Baren plant was making that? Although, I heard that Denmark makes some of Sutliff stuff, like the Virginia slices.

I've heard from several sources that it's the same blend as Presbyterian Reformation. It's less mocha and more raspberry Lakeland.

I know nobody so far seems to believe this, but I’m going out on a limb that Mac Baren blends will be safe. I could see many Sutliff aromatic blends going away, but I think they’ll do similar to what they’ve done with Peterson making all the Dunhill blends, with all the staple Mac Baren blends. STG seem to have a thing for Euro blends and nixing American companies so I could even see Sutliff mostly going away but all the Mac staying on. We shall see.
