Got the new Rivers Of London novel today...Lies Sleeping. Its tag line is 'imagine Harry Potter grew up and joined The Flith' You English speakers really throw me. I always have to look up words to understand what you are saying, and half the time I still don't. What is "The Flith"?

The Flith is a very unkind nickname for the police

Heinlein and all that era of science fiction was so wonderfully imaginative. That was before every book was a space ship opera or had to have a map in the front.
Another one to read from that era is Harlan Ellison. Creative beyond creative. His collection of short stories entitled Angry Candy has entertained me for years. Even when i know the darn story, I love that feeling, that sense of wonder, that ohhmyyy, that those authors were able to create.

Imagine having to earn citizenship and the right to vote!

Smoking while reading is a delightful combination. The smoke and flavor enhance the other-worldliness of the experience of being totally absorbed in the story.

This was especially true after he came back from WWII. He did become more liberal later, especially in his views on sexual issues.

I just started The Reluctant Swordsman. A sword and sorcerer fantasy. I don't know if it's going to be a good read yet.

It is hard to separate the author as a person from the book.
Artist and art. If the artist was a horrible person can the art still be good. What if you don't know anything about the artist and find out later.
It is not easy. An author I have enjoyed for a long time was more recently discovered to be pretty despicable prior to launching his writing career under a different name. He pretty much kept his prior life secret, nobody knew for a long time. Can I thoroughly enjoy his books without seeming to support his prior life.
Can and should art be judged on its own merit? Or does it matter that the artist was a creep.
I just dunno.

Look at Picasso. Not a good person, but a great artist. A certain Adolf wasn't bad. If people had bought more of his paintings, who knows?

I finished "The Reluctant Swordsman" and I guess I liked it because I have started book 2,"The Coming of Wisdom", by Dave Dunkin.
