The Ipcress File by Len Deighten. A classic spy thriller from the days of classic spy thrillers. (And a great movie starring a very young Michael Caine.) This book apparently inspired John le Carré, who is the king of the espionage novel IMO.
Perfect pipe smoking read.

The start of the "Harry Palmer" series of movies. Also, that Palmer character was reprised in the pilot episode "Endeavour" on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. You are right about le Carrè. Have you read The Tailor of Panama?

WAR is a Racket- General Smedley Butler ( Americas highest decorated Major General in the Marines)
Described how many billions corporations made on WW 1 at the cost of American blood , who went to war by being brainwashed by our government into a false patriotism cause.
He advocated that we should never go beyond 500 miles outside of our borders. Most overseas wars have been going on for years with most of them being religious based anyway.
No one in our government would be allowed to determine if we go to war. The only people who would be allowed to vote are the men and women who would be doing the fighting. The cowards in Washington don't care how much blood is lost, therefore their family members would be the first to go to the front lines.

I bet he had a hard time when he first joined the Marines with a name like that. Probably made him extra tough, like a "A Boy Named Sue". If you really pay attention to the entire history of America, the real business of America is War. It is what we do. It is what free people have done throughout history. If you want to stay free, you must constantly fight for it. You are either a warrior or a sheep.

The Book of Matthew in the KJV Bible and Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" for the third time. Matthew helps keep me patient and forgiving so I'm not smiting the fools I'm surrounded by too quickly, and Sun Tzu helps me win when I can refrain no longer. 😁

Just finished a book about a young Italian who joined the German Army to spy for the Allies. Getting ready to read a book about Frank Hamer, Texas Ranger and man who was instrumental in killing Bonnie and Clyde.

If you have a chance, could you list the title and author. He and Captain McDonald were my boyhood heroes. Lawmen through and through.

Smedley Butler was known for his criticism of US policies in Latin America. He resented seeing his Corps used as "high priced muscle men for rackets such as The United Fruit Company and First National City Bank" (now, Citibank). He sort of started a tradition of top Marines being outspoken. Some say the reason Chesty Puller never made Commandant was his outspoken opinions. The powers that were did not want another Smedley Butler.

Getting ready to read a book about Frank Hamer, Texas Ranger and man who was instrumental in killing Bonnie and Clyde. I have that book on the shelf waiting for me to get to it. Fascinated by the true stories of the rangers. When we were stuck in Sanderson Texas for 3 days a few years ago we spent a lot of time with an old timer who knew a lot of the old rangers and border patrol guys. His stories would have made another great book.

I read a lot of spy thrillers, much like many on here. I'm currently reading "A Death in Vienna" by Daniel Silva which is awesome because I was just in Vienna and know a lot of where he is talking about in the book.
I highly recommend his books.

Started Hamer Book, very interesting, way back it sucked if you were a black or Indian, gives credence to my search for wife’s father an Indian from Oklahoma, census reports were falsified if you were Indian they registered as black because it was better to be black than Indian, , as told to me by census officials. How the World has changed, some for the better, some not so much.

His brother George moved to Oklahoma and embraced his Indian side.
