On a recent country Squire podcast, JD listed his "tobbaconist pet peeves" and one of them is when a patron finishes a stogie and grinds it out where it ends up smoldering forever and stinking up the place, like disposable diapers in a burn pit. Simply letting the cigar extinquish itself is the way to go...although I had never thought abot it, he is right.

What I don't like is the after smell in the room from the cigar smoke itself.

My wife doesn't mind unless she's got a headache or it's a particularly stinky blend. She likes the smell of certain blends like Crooner.

My wife buys me pipes. New ones for special occasions and estate pipes at antique/collectible shops.

My wife has no problem with my pipe smoking in the house which is good because I am handicapped and in a wheelchair. It would be very difficult to go outside when I desired a smoke. I don't smoke aromatics much anymore, but I do keep Boswell's Pipers Pleasure around for her to frequently enjoy the aroma. She doesn't tolerate the smell of Lat blends, which is ok because I don't enjoy smoking latikia (at least not yet).

Being from Utah both of my wives don't mind. My wife has been great and we often sit out back together while I smoke. She prefers to be upwind (I will leave that open for trailboss to insert a fart joke) but doesn't complain ever. Of course with her shoe and purse habit I am still lagging behind in spending.

"Both wives?" Hell! I consider myself lucky to survive with one wife for 42 years. I will say that the smart wives with shoe and purse habits don't say anything about pipes and tobacco purchases because telling the husband to stop spending so much may come back to haunt them.

Let me ship you up a half gallon of my habanero pickled eggs...eat about six of them, washed down with a six pack of Budweiser, the room note will be so memorable that never again will she think that your former self was objectionable. It will be a reset of sorts, on what is truly tolerable.

What does my wife think about my pipe smoking ?
It's kind of her fault ! I stated in my intro that I have been smoking pipes off and on since 1982.But that's a bit deceptive. I have owned a pipe since then but most often didn't have tobacco to put in it.The first couple of times I tried, I would pick up what was available to me,Borkum Riff.Usually ending with me Talking funny and putting the pipe back on the shelf for a year or more.Fast forward to about two and a half years ago.I'm kicked back with cigar,a nice stinky one,and the Missus ask's me that fatal question,"What about your Pipes?". Well this time i had access to pipe forums and with some proper instruction I learned how to pack and what that tamper thingy was for. I read about these other blends and where to find them.So now that I'm up to aroud 30 pipes and about 6 lbs of tobaccos, I feal comfortable calling myself a Piper. And if by chance she decides to complain,I light up a bowl of Cult Blood Red Moon and she remembers why she likes/allows me to smoke in the house.

My wife detests my pipe smoking, but will grudgingly admit that it is bettr than the cigs and cigars. She like when I do snus though, so I do quite a bit of it.

She used to buy me cigars once in a while. This does not occur today though she has never given me grief over my enjoyment of tobacco. Even so I have reduced my intake to more of a special occasion gig.

My wife would rather smoke a cigar. I think the aroma of some of the blends I smoke she would rather not smell, but over all if I am happy and she is having a cigar we are good.

My wife and I smoke our pipes together. It's a great bonding experience. I always look foreward to those long nights, sitting out under the stars enjoying good tobacco together.

Since this has been resurrected, I'll throw in my experiences.
My wife wasn't keen on me smoking a pipe. Previous to that I would have smoked a mild cigar if we went away to a hotel for a night (like once a year, if that). She was ok with that because it was once in a while.
When I bought my basket pipe she was a bit shocked and said, 'I'm not nursing you through cancer.' (she's a nurse and sees what smoking does to people, albeit cigarette smoking). Fast forward to last year and she never really brings it up. If the weather's good we would both sit in the garden, wife with a glass of prosecco or gin and me with my pipe. I still tread carefully, but any time she brings it up lung cancer statistics, I always add...from cigarettes.
I did argue once by asking her, 'what image comes to mind when you think of a pipe smoker?' She said, 'an old man'. Then I replied, 'exactly - OLD, much older than I am, and not dead.'
I know pipe smoking isn't the healthiest, but the damage that occasional pipe smoking does to the body is the same, if not a lot less than obesity or alcoholism, etc. It's a risk vs reward and she knows that I enjoy it so she's pretty cool about it now.
