Just watched Hostiles on Prime. Excellent movie. 8/10. Yes! very good movie, I loved the ending. Yeah, I like a happy ending. This was a period when G-d and The Great Spirit both turned their eyes away.

The Bruce Willis take on Death Wish. It was okay. I hate that they worked their political oppinion into the script, but whatever- It's the ...20-teens? And that's common. Overall it was okay. I'm just not an action film kind of guy in my middling years. It's good enough to lay the background for an evening of pizza and Pabst.

Maybe because Charles and I had lunch, dinner together and shared a number of pipes while I was living in Europe....I’ll go with Charles Bronson. I’m now thinking of the rigged door scene on the log cabin👍👍

"Charley Varrick", 1973. Another Don Siegel Caper film. With Walter Mathau. There is a pipe smoking Heavy, Joe Don Baker. Nobody makes them like Siegel.

During the wee hours of this morning I watched and enjoyed Reservior Dogs 9/10đź‘Ťđź‘Ť Quentin Tarantino, a brilliant director with a bit of a disturbing mind to come up with a number of scenes in most of his movies. Michael Madsen, an outstanding actor in many movies. Also his short lived TV series Vengeance Unlimited 9/10!!! It was a hit according to a public poll but had poor Nielsen ratings.....go figure!

I took my son and daughter to the theater to introduce them to the glory that is The Big Lebowski on the big screen Wednesday night. I think I've seen that movie close to a dozen times and I pick up something new every time a see it.
It is a Coen Brothers masterpiece. 10/10

Streets of Fire; Bad, over the top, and surprisingly hammy. The use of the Universal backlot meant that almost every scene reminded me of better movies filmed there. I don't know if it was meant to be the anti-American Graffiti or some large statement about life like Hair or just capture the essence of rock and roll like Bat Out of Hell? In any case all three are better. Props to a young Willem Dafoe who's as maniacal looking as old Willem Dafoe. I was a bit surprised to see how many of the producers went on to become big time Hollywood executives.

Watched Freeway again last night. It's a 1996 Los Angeles twist on Little Red Riding Hood. Might have been inspiring to Tarantino. Reese Witherspoon should have won an Oscar for best actress and Britney Murphy for best supporting actress. Kiefer Sutherland is also great. These are some offers the best acting performances you will ever see, but unfortunately they are in a movie that wasn't widely seen and isn't easy to classify. If you like Eating Raoul or A Boy and His Dog, then you need to see this.

The Promise. A war movie with Christian Bale set in the Ottoman Empire during WW1. Any details would be politically incorrect to someone, but it should be seen by everyone with a conscience. 9/10

Mas Sabe el Diablo por Viejo - A romantic comedy about a young guy pretending to be old in order to live for free at an old folks home. Comedy and romance ensues. It was ok but the editing was shoddy in parts.
The Night Devoured the World - Zombies invade France and only an Aussie survives locked up alone in an apartment building. My usual take on zombie movies is that when on a small budget they are psychological horror movies and with a large budget are action movies. This one was 100% small budget and the audience wasn't pleased even if I found it surprisingly un-French.

"The Fountainhead", 1949. Ayn Rand's best book adapted by her for the screen with Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal, Raymond Massey.
I am not a big fan of Rand and find much of her philosophy objectionable. I view her in context with her Soviet upbringing which explains a lot. She is a good writer if long winded. I admire this book and Atlas Shrugged even though I do not agree with much of it.
The Fountainhead was a real challenge for old Cooper. He had to deliver speeches which were more than he was used to. I admire his courage and dedication in doing so. One of my favorite actors from that era.

Ron: I have a copy of Freeway that I drag out every now and then and make some Reese Witherspoon fan watch it. The expressions on their faces is sooo good! My 20 yo grand daughter kept asking me how inappropriate it was going to get. She's really afraid of nudity for some reason. But guess what? There isn't any, just a lot of adult language coming from the mouth of sweet little Reese. Brook Shields was perfect too.
As far as recent movies, I picked up a DVD from the library of Black Panther. I'd heard good things about it, and it was ok. For me it was just another Marvel superhero story with a mostly black cast. Some of the characters were very memorable to me, but the story line was typical. I suppose the message was if you've got the means, you should be helping those less fortunate, or those who are not like you. Nothing wrong with it, just didn't live up to the hype, that's just my opinion...
