We had to replace our dryer today, and when the man came to deliver the new-to-us (used, but working) one, he complimented me on the pipe I was smoking, which was my pre-Republic Peterson bulldog. He said he smokes a pipe occasionally, but doesn't want people to know it. I said he should just be himself and not worry about it, but it seems he's too self-conscious to risk it. Well, it got me to wondering how many of you smoke your pipe in public and if any of you reluctant to do so. I never cared if anybody cared or not, and mostly get compliments when I'm out in public with a pipe. Let's hear how you deal with it.

I tend to suffer from the self concious thought that I'll look old, though I eventually get over it.
The main thing for me is convenience. It's not like the old days where you could have a pipe in your mouth and just walk into a building. Plus, if I were to try and smoke my pipe on cig breaks with my friends when we are out, they would be done by the time I packed and lit it.
When I have smoked in public though, it's always been positive.

On the rare occasion I leave my farm , I don't usually smoke, I sometimes do long trips to Texas to see my sons in my Truck and don't want the wife to have to smell that, she lets me smoke in the house so I'm giving her a break. But when I occasionally go to Bingo with her, I load up my Pipe with Troutstream, I'm not an Aro man but this blend suits me and the Blue Hair Ladies, got a passel of them around us saying it remind them of Father, Brother, Grandfather. I'm like Jim, I don't give a rats arse who does and doesn't like my pipe.

I smoke a pipe in public, although I don't at work. There's just not enough time during a break to enjoy a pipe.
I have trouble doing so while I'm driving, so I don't.

I smoke pipe anywhere allowed by law. I've gotten comments like, "What you got in that pipe?" followed by some chuckles self applauding the unoriginal joke. Then I tell them what blend I'm smoking. Some folks give me the , "I love the smell of a pipe!" and the occasional, "I haven't seen anyone smoke a pipe in years!" I even got one comment last July in the Black Hills while smoking a cigar, "I love the smell of a good cigar! I wish my husband would smoke a good cigar for me once and a while." Most people don't seem to comment though. Perhaps it's because I'm very visibly tattooed with a shaved head. People almost always get the wrong idea about that and just stare at me with disgust, whether I'm smoking a pipe or not.

...I smoke anywhere and everywhere allowed by law...and even a few places that are questionable...I do not and will not apologize for smoking my pipe nor will I argue the point with anyone...I was recently at a coffee café and sitting outside in the designated smoking area...several folks sat at a table near mine and began to complain about the smell and smoke...after several minutes one came over and told me smoking offended them...I told them perhaps they should find another location in the non-smoking area...They responded that I was rude...I responded that only gentlemen and scholars smoked a pipe and there were damned few of us left...that ended the complaint.

When I can; however, I normally stick with my preferred aros in company - Boswell's Pennsylvania Dutch Treat or Mac Baren Vanilla Cream. Both agree with my palate and I've never received anything except positive compliments from others about the room note on these two.
I have two pipes specifically dedicated to these blends respectively, a 2004 1/4 bent J.M. Boswell billiard for the Dutch Treat and a 1981 Peterson System Star 307 for the Vanilla Cream. They'll smoke these blends perfectly to a gray ash and I also receive positive comments about them in public as well so it's a win/win.

Most of my smoking in public occurs in my truck and people do tend to look twice most of the time. It's just not a common site anymore. I used to smoke in the local casinos but they banned pipes and cigars ... so I banned them! 😅

There is an excellent British pub in Arlington called Sherlock's, that used to allow smoking, so I'd smoke there. I saw one other guy at the bar smoking a pipe, so went and introduced myself and offered him some LNF. He started yelling at me that he 'don't smoke that shite' and grows his own tobacco. He was mean, and for no reason. Shortly thereafter, Sherlock's outlawed smoking. The waitresses were probably happy they didn't go home with cigarette clothes.
Finding a legal place is tricky. Plus, I'm single and get to smoke at home, so not much reason for me to stand on some street corner without my pc to smoke.

I smoke in public but only when outdoors, I smoke at the range when me and my son are shooting and when he is at shooting competitions. I also smoke when fishing with the wife or son. I don't smoke in front of my daughter even tough she knows I smoke occasionally,She would most likly have an adverse reaction to seeing me smoke.

I smoke when ever an where ever I can. For work I load up 2 or 3 bowls in my falcon bowls an just switch them out as needed. Where ever I go my pipe is always with me.

In front of best Buy... My daughter said "stand by the pole dad, I want to take your picture"...I didn't see the sign..nobody was sitting at the tables outside the paradise bakery, but an employee came out and told me that I needed to move along...knowing the laws, I moved five feet away and was legal...screw the guy. I walk into the truck stop with my pipe to get coffee all the time, and quite often have it hanging from my mouth as I dry a few flakes in the microwave. I get a lot of looks, but if anyone asks, I will tell them that it isn't burning, so far no one has ever asked if they do say they smell smoke I will ask them for a change of clothes, because my clothes are smoky...even if I have an ember going, typically my work pipes don't send smoke out of the chimney if I Refrain from puffing 40 feet from the door. At the state line just inside Arizona, when I am open carrying Californians really get distressed...the pipe becomes a secondary hazard In their eyes I reckon.

Even though smoking is forbidden in restaurants, there is a New Mexico restaurant a block from my home that has outdoor dining and if no one else is out there, they are fine with it. If other people are nearby and I ask them beforehand, they usually have no problem and the wait staff brings a small fan to puut behind me that sends the smoke away from everyone.

Yes, although it tends to be more in the car since there are so few places to smoke out in public. Plus, I live out in the country and can't just walk to somewhere.

I prefer to sit at home, outside on the patio, and enjoy my pipes in a relaxed atmosphere. I wouldn't mind driving and enjoy a pipe, but have yet to try.

I smoke while I drive most all the time. Not when I am on public property standing on my feet. In the 19 years I have lived in this part of NM have not seen another pipe smoker. This only means my pipe might be confusing for people, especially the younger ones.

When camping I do, the last trip we stayed at a RV park and I got a lot of compliments on the smell (grape captain black hah). When driving I used to but haven't since I bought a new truck. Anywhere in the neighborhood I do. Also when I visit friends for an outdoor party or barbecue type event.

I smoke a pipe in public almost every day. Why not? I'm not ashamed of smoking a pipe. Besides, I only smoke outdoors, and often do so while walking through my neighborhood. Pretty much everyone thinks of me as "that guy with the pipe".

I don't leave the house very often and when I do it's only to go grocery shopping or to the post office both of which you're not allowed to smoke in and I never smoke in my truck so unless someone happens by and see's me on the porch with my pipe............no I don't smoke in public but, would love an excuse to.

I don't think I smoked in a restaurant since my twenties. At work I smoked cigars, much to everyone's annoyance. I am sure I lit a pipe up at work when I had time. I think the last time I smoked a pipe and drove was on a 45 minute drive to Tinder Box in 2008 or so. Since home bound I have had an occasional pipe outside. Mostly I love fogging up the room. It feels very spiritual to me. Would have no issues smoking in public, but would not make an issue of it.

i don't. i have quite a few friends and family who would give me grief so i keep it on the down-low. i don't post anything on FB about it. but i smoke in my yard in the evening as weather allows, or at our cabin, and i go to the smoking lounge across town on occasion, especially for pipe club. otherwise, i'm not very public about it.
