I had a twenty dollar discount card from a them that I had to use up. I had been wanting to find a Canadian for a decent price, maybe something to restore, but the #56 fit the bill so I ordered one this morning. Had to buy a pouch of tobacco to get the price over $20 so the card would work. Looking forward to checking this pipe out

Don't understand why they're only offering the discount on the brown ones. The brushed black ones appear to be the same pipe, other than the color.

Roy, I think it is because the brown finish almost runs in three different tones. I kind of like it, but picky pipers might have favored the black/uniform finish. With the striated rustication, Brown could be stained Black relatively easily I think, if buyers purchasing multiple pipes wanted variety.

I guess you'd have to strip off whatever varnish is on there, stain the new color, then varnish again? The 405 I got has a nasty blemish and I've been thinking of messing around with it.

they must be overstocked on the Brushed Brown or bought a production overrun. I did my part to help them out. :

I've put a serious effort into breaking this pipe in over the last two days. I also noticed the bitter taste that others had noted (I had the same issue with the other unsmoked Stanwells that I bought) but with this morning's bowl (4th so far), that taste is no longer there.
It is a good smoker; a fine pipe. The feel of the brushed pipe is a little rough as others have stated, but that is not a problem for me. It is a very light pipe and is easy to clench without having to bite down hard on the bit.
I am extremely pleased with my $20 (free with coupon!) pipe. I'm going to let it rest for a couple days, but look forward to picking it back up.

When I get my other three on Monday, I will have five of them.
When it departed Pennsylvania, the expected delivery date was Friday 1/19...
The distribution center annex is about 3 miles from my work where all my shipments go...arrived at 5AM on 1/18, that means that I should get it by next Wednesday....I am serious.
They must have blizzard delays inside the Phoenix distribution facility that delay the packages...

trailboss: that's the same time frame I experience . . . of course I am 20 miles away. Sure Post should be called by what it is: Sure Delay.

Update: they must have a ton of these, as the sale is still in effect. Still sending 20% off Promo card, but they bumped the minimum to $100.00 to claim it.
Entering: limitedgift (one word) in the search box, brings up the Brushed Brown pipes @$19.95 and there is still a varied shape selection (some are 9mm).

I have been smoking mine regularly.
When this thread first started, my inclination was to poo poo $20 pipes... I mean how good can a $20 new pipe be?
Pleasantly surprised at my first two, the other three are very good also.

Mine were bought with promo codes, so effective price (with free shipping) is $16.00 per pipe. I've paid more for cobs, so no regrets here, either.

Resurrecting this one - just wondering if anyone played around with sanding or refinishing theirs? I'm starting to understand what Ronv69 meant about the creepy hand-feel.

No, but I am more sympathetic to the hand feel complaints. Perhaps the crudest striation I have encountered and it has put me off other striated pipes as well. My experience has shown that this is the cheapest way a maker can rusticate a pipe.

I have put mine away somewhere that I can't find them. They might be worth a little sandpaper experimental effort. I think I bought 2 or 3. I have other pipes in the same shapes so I am good.

The two I ordered are fine for me,but I do quite a bit of manual labor and have some good calluses going. For what it's worth, I can run barb wire without gloves.I like that the pipes are light and great smokers. fit well in my big mits, and pack a good hour long smoke.

Well, if I get up the nerve to risk wrecking a pipe (and the motivation), I'll come back and post pics....

They don't feel too bad to me...more tactile, and easy to grip onto, but I use my hands a lot. Not an aesthetically refined pipe, but the plumbing seems to be in working order...I think that the machinery gives it the wire brush rustication, works well for me.

They are now on sale for 39.95, in either brushed black or brown. More convinced now that the previous batch of Brown were 2nds, as they had color runs and fills in some of them and Black weren't offered at the low sale price.

One of mine is so covered in fills and blotchy colors that it looks like a good candidate for messing around with. It was probably a third rather than a second. Not that I'm complaining for the price I paid....

I was smoking my Canadian today and wanted to revisit this thread. I really like this pipe. It is light and easy to clench and it is a great smoker. I tend to reach for it quite often. In hind site I wish that I had bought a few more of these brushed brown pipes when they had them.

That is a nice looking pipe. Even if only one of them ended up being a good smoker it would be worth 30 bucks. I wish I would have taken advantage of that deal. Enjoy!

Very nice pipe Jim👍 I don’t own a Stanwell that’s not an excellent smoker. That funky taste is somewhat common with the Stanwell pipes made in Italy. Two of mine had the same issue, but after a half dozen smokes they both smoke great. Very well balanced and light weight briar makes them excellent pipes for clenching.

Ted, I have a couple others that were un-smoked that were made in Denmark that I picked up in an antique shop. They both had the very same nasty taste (as did this one) for the first few smokes too. It must be something they use t coat the bowl. Once that was gone though, they are great pipes. BTW, I know that it is hind sight. Not hind site.
