Recently tried blending some of my own personal mixtures based on easily available, professional blends. I came up with a few recipes and used Lane Limited "HGL" as the main component. "HGL" is a mild-medium, aromatic/crossover English, with a tiny amount of condimental Latakia, just to keep things exotic and interesting. No Lat-bomb here. "HGL" and Lane's RLP-6 share the same basic tobaccos, but RLP-6 has no added Latakia. RLP-6 is the bulk version of "Captain Black"-original. These mentioned blends are very mild, smooth, easy to smoke, and have a great aroma. I also wanted to try a personal mixture made with some mild, cigar-leaf. I came up with two different blends that I will share with the Briar Patch crew:
"PLEASANT MOMENTS"
1 part mild cigar leaf (Maduro) ** 1 part Cubed Cut Burley-Stokkebye #41 1 part match-"Elizabethan"-Sutliff
Mix all three components together as the "base". Mix 1 part(by volume) of the base blend, to 1-1/2 parts "HGL". Store in a jar, 10-20 days to mellow, and smooth out the flavors.
Very mild, slightly sweet, nutty, not harsh. Cigar-leaf adds creaminess and thickness to the smoke feel, without adding roughness. Thick clouds of very aromatic smoke, (slight piney aroma, now and then), from the tiny amount of Latakia. Sweet tea flavors from the Virginias, but not cloying. Very easy to smoke....beautiful aromas for smoker and sniffers. Far more interesting than smoking straight "HGL" = Captain Black w/Latakia.
** I used some cigar "trimmings" that I bought at a shop that specialized in making hand-rolled cigars. I asked for some mild leaf. I'm almost certain these "trimmings" contain both wrapper and filler.
*******************************************************************************************
"GOLDEN HOURS"
Equal parts (by volume):
1 part Lane Ltd. "HGL" 1 part McClelland #2050
Mix/jar this hybrid blend... and let the flavors mellow.
Very smooth, mild, easy to smoke. Grassy Virginias and nutty Burleys + some sweetness from the Toasted Cavendish, Latakia.
Enjoy.

Dear Mr. Crapgame.... Is there a place on this forum for blending recipes and DIY mixtures? I just joined and can't find my way around, yet. BTW, sorry for the loss of your dog, Gertie. Too sad. Thanks for the interest in my "frankenblends" (your term).... )) Frank NYC

Golden Hours sounds intriguing. I love 2050 on its own, and always think HGL should be better than it is. This might be just the cure!

Thanks for the suggestions and for the interest.
Hybrid blends can be interesting. Adding some other leaf to professionally blended mixtures, I think, is a good starting point. Why not enhance and transform what's already there?
@ Chico.... Agreed. IMO, "HGL" is transformed by the addition of McC #2050. It becomes much richer, and grassy sweet, but never cloying. The Latakia is minimal, but the smokey-piney aroma just teases the nostrils. Sniffers will like the smoke, too.
Happy smoking.

Frank, I have a great couple of blends called " all things" cherry and vanilla. I mix in a jar all of the cherry or vanilla t obaccos I have that just can't stand on their own merits. When mixed all together you find a pretty good smokable blend !

crapgame.....
How can you lose? If the original blends suck on their own....it's 50/50 chance that they'll be less suckier when mixed. It's like having a Mutual Fund for pipe tobaccos. BTW, if you happen to make a great blend of tobaccos from your conservation program....how do you duplicate it for posterity? Just asking, rhetorically....
And, good luck with your cherry/vanilla confections. Have fun.

Red Win Soup 50/50 Dan Tobacco Da Vinci and McClelland 5100. I enjoy an aromatic mostly for the change of pace and the wife enjoys the smell. I have tried all kinds of aros and I am always looking for something that is not in the "vanilla" category. I swear 80% of aros must use vanilla. Anyway, the red wine was a bit strong and almost sour in Davinci. I always use 5100 as my 1st line of defense with an aro. Going to be sad if they stop making it. I mixed a small batch of 50/50 and I swear I struck gold. This is a really good smoke. So I mixed the rest of the tin with equal amounts of 5100 and damned if it wasn't good. The wine is now just tingling the taste buds in the background and the 5100 really smoothed and relaxed the blend. The name was simply me trying to compete with billyklubb. Next up will be some Ripe Honeydew. If that aro needs some help I am going to try starting with a Lat bomb to mix with it first. If that fails I will try 5100. If that fails I usually send it to trailboss. I am thinking of calling it Half-Ripe Fruit.

I just don't like sending my "crap" to people all the time. I never buy a blend thinking I am going to create a frakenblend with it. I only do it when it isn't doing it for me. I should also mention that more than not the little bit I mix up as a trial ends up on the bushes outside.

I have a few remains of samples I didn't like, too small to trade. I threw them all in an empty honey jar, added some booze, and letting it all marinate. It's a bit too sticky now so I need to add another blend at some point.

Frank, I never replicate my blend, it is always evolving. I will add some blending burley to make it less goopy, maybe add some better grade chocolate to each just because... no special reason.. it is a blend made to meld and she with me!
