I realize a filtered pipe is popular in parts of Europe today, was once popular in the USA of the 1960s and does not seem to be popular in the USA today.
What are your experiences with a filtered pipe?

From my experience of it, the filter catches the moisture from my mouth and stops the pipe gurgling. I'm still not sure it does THAT much by way of filtering the smoke. So for me it's a water-catcher.
As always, YMMV.

I have numerous Savs which use the 6mm balsa filter. I think they accomplish the intended mission and are among my favorites. I just recently started experimenting with 9mm meerschaum filters from across the pond and it’s been positive as well. I definitely prefer them over charcoal filters which I find too restrictive.

Most of the pipes I smoke I use 9mm Stanwell filters.

I smoke my filter pipes without a filter. I really don't know why. I guess I didn't want to be bothered with the filter...

I smoke both filtered and non-filtered pipes. For the pipes that I have which are made to accept filters, I use filters. I enjoy using filters but it is not a requirement for me since most of my pipes do not accept them.

I never use them. If a pipe comes with one I chuck it immediately.

I have two Stanwells that take 9 mm filters. They seem to mute the flavor of the tobacco, but otherwise I'm indifferent to them.

I have a few 9mm pipes. They are fitted with Vauen adapters and smoke fine. Cleaning is a bit of a nuisance. When using a filter I liked the balsa the best.

I like the 6 mm balsa on bent Savinellis, they do catch the moisture. I made a couple of bents for myself to take them. Works better thanerson sump. Don't like the charcoal filters, the balsas don't effect the taste.

Pipe Nook has some Big Bens, which he is touting as not affecting flavor, due to ceramic on each end of the tube instead of plastic

I have owned several 6mm Savinelli's and 9mm Winslow's and never used the filter or adapter. Both smoked very well without them. I recently picked up a 9mm 1968 Dunhill LB and it smokes great without the filter. I honestly never understood the need for a filter. When a pipe is drilled properly and has a good stem, the pipe should never smoke wet. All my Sav's that took a filter had wide open draws and smoked dry as a bone. They were not expensive pipes and all were drilled great.

If a pipe is designed for one, I use it. A 6mm/9mm wide open draw is too much for me. These filter threads always seem to imply that there is something wrong with using a filter and imo, that is a decision left up to the individual piper and not a consensus of the committee.

Most of my filtered pipes got an adapter converting them to non filter pipes.

...it was a medico filter in an MM hardwood, and the smoke was excellent, flavor of tobacco was unimpaired (IMHO), pipe cleaner went through the filter, nothing bad to report.

One thing I WILL say is that my Mr Brogg pipe came with a filter, which I used for my first smoke. I tasted flavours in the tobacco that I'd never tasted before. I thought it might have been the pipe (going from cobs to pear-wood)Then when I swapped it out I never got those flavours back. I'm assuming the filter helped, but I'm not sure.

I truly love to read other's impressions...

I don't care for filters. Really wanted to like them since years ago a friend who gave up the pipe gave me some odd and ends which included 100 boxes of filters. Just couldn't warm up to the idea. Still have them around here somewhere.
I have a few pipes that take a filter, but they get smoked without them - wide open, it's the only way for me.

Just because I said I don't understand it doesn't mean I think people should agree with me. I am all for doing what works for you and never look down on anyone's decisions. I am sorry if you took my comment about using filters as a shot at people who do, it was not my intention. If I ever told you my procedure for cleaning a pipe after I smoke it, you would think I am nuts.
