I most like a smooth pipe with nice grain, and no fills. Lately, however, I have come to appreciate blasted finishes as well.

When I am holding smooth I think it's best. When I am holding rusticated I wonder how I could have not preferred rustic at the start.

I have certain textures that rub me wrong. Specific blasts and rustication will hit those textures that are wrong, smooth can't. I can bring back a dull smooth pipe it's a lot more work ti bring back a dull blast or rustication.

When I first began collecting pipes I was a grain whore. I chased that bitch all over the world. From Fiammata Castello's, to Former, to Rainer Barbi, to high end Winslows and more. I loved looking at flame grain, angel hair, birdseye and then I didn't.
Fast forward to my collection now, I have way more sandblasted pipes than I do straight grains. I love the look of a really well done blast. Most of my favorites are from Rad Davis and other No American artisans. The only straight grains I have now is my lone Castello Occhio Di Pernice(real nice birdseye) and my collection of Willmer AAA straight grains. I didn't buy them for the grain but for their smoking properties, the nice grain was just a bonus.
Lately the grain whore has been sitting on my shoulder again talking to me as I look at all kinds of shiny good looking straight grains out there. There is a Radice Dublin with a cumberland stem that has been calling me for over 2 weeks now. I am slowly loosing the battle.
One thing I do know for sure is that you cannot smoke grain, it is pretty to look at but smoking properties wise it makes no difference in my experience.

Smooth for me. Cross grain, straight grain, flame grain, I love grain. I can appreciate a good blast which accentuates the grain and own several. The vast majority of my collection is smooth with a very light stain or a good contrast stain.

I prefer smooth. Have always loved the grain on a pipe. When I make a pipe, I'm disappointed when the briar has flaws (or I create flaws) which necessitates blasting.

I agree. That shape is awful, especially on such a nice piece of briar.

I have a lot of rusticated and sandblast pipes, but I prefer smooth with little coating on the bowl.

I prefer smooth, but I there are some nice rusticated or blasted pipes out there - sometimes the shape is perfect and the blasting or rustication just works...However, what I DO love more than that are those freehand pipes where the bowl and shank are smooth but the bowl-rim is rusticated....They make the hairs on my neck stand up.

All of the above, but I am a sucker for a deep rustication.

You would first have to change your molds from your Frankenstein face. And since you can't even fry an egg without the help of john Lawitzke or billyklubb, I'm not too worried!

Variety is the spice of life... a new phrase I coined, feel free to use it!
My straight grains are beauties, and my Brakner rusticated pipes are equally a pleasure to gaze upon.... even the cobs have a beauty to them... nothing like smoking a fresh cob, tasting the corn and seeing the heat bring out the glisten!
