I was just reading a tobacco review here on the forums by the best tobacco reviewer I have had the luxury of reading. In said review it was stated that the Virginias in this blend must be from McClelland because of the vinegar smell. I don't want to start some crazy blend run here but I was just curious...how many blenders are out there that have used Virginias or other leaves from McClelland? Will there be a small domino affect that could happen with these blends. Could we be losing some great blends because of the lack of those wonderful Virginias?

McCranies has 3 or 4 pretty well known house blends that McClelland was making for them. Red Ribbon hurts me the most.

I believe all of the Butera Virginia's were made my MC. I loaded up on Royal Vintage Dark Stoved which is very similar to Dark Star. I know there were tons of tobacconists out there who used MC as their base for many of their house blends, all of those are going away once stocks are depleted.

The review I was reading was a Peretti review and that is what surprised me. I knew red ribbon and butera but wasn't thinking about other blenders that could be affected.

McCranie's and Butera for sure, and any number of house blends that tobacconists made from McClelland components. McClelland supplied bulk blends, that were renamed, to many tobacconists.

Red Wine Soup is history..... Of all my blends that is my "Save for a Blue Moon" blend. I go into my closet, light up, and invoke the Paraclete of Tatanka

Anyone tried the Butera's Latakia blends? I ordered a couple before they disappeared, but have never tried them.

Nording Hunter is another line that will die off. The VA one seems long gone, but the aros are still out there.

Hard to imagine that the answer is anything but...yes.
I would hope that the McNeils would offer advice and contact info to those that have depended on them for supplying their leaf, but who knows?

Unless McClelland's tobacco supplier(s) have also gone out of business, I would think that some of those Virginias will turn up somewhere else, albeit in somewhat different form.

Unless McClelland's tobacco supplier(s) have also gone out of business, I would think that some of those Virginias will turn up somewhere else, albeit in somewhat different form. McClelland had contracts with several farms and they also, from what I've been told, had arrangements with major buyers to purchase selected leaf. But that's just the beginning. Mike McNeil was constantly monitoring the tobaccos they selected for each and every blend throughout the processing stages, checking temperature and pressure, 14 hours a day, seven days a week. The tobaccos were only the beginning. The "magic" was in the processing, and that's over. Besides, the quality that they were looking for wasn't turning up from their growers. The money just wasn't there for growers to take their leaf through the laborious and time intensive process of preparing it for use. That traditional way of harvesting and curing has been dying out. So those tobaccos can't be found because the processing method no longer exists for financial reasons. Even if their leaf suppliers continue to operate, the results will be so different as to make the tobaccos unrecognizable. It's over. Done. Finito. Kaput. There are other great blends, done in a different style, to be had. At least, for now.

The VaPer in the Nording line - Beagle - is a great pipe tobacco. Some folks find it similar to McClelland 2015. I don't know about that, but it is a nice sweet and raisin-y VaPer.

I'm going to really miss McClelland 5100 Red Cake, McCranie's Red Ribbon, and Butera Pelican, but life will go on (I think ... pretty sure).

Pelican is made by Germain, so I don't understand why McClelland closing would have an effect on it. Of course, being made by Germain is almost the same as being out of production.

I'm glad you said that, Sablebrush. That's what I thought as well. Someone on another board said Butera blends were made by McClelland and I've been too lazy to double-check.

I pulled down a tin of Beagle today, and it did indeed have "blended by McClelland" written on the label.

I'm certain the number is a little higher than that. Just yesterday, I added McClelland as the blender on a couple of McCranie's blends, and perhaps more of that is yet to be done.

As a result of the void in the market, I'm trying cellar as many VA flakes as I can acquire (with little luck). I know I'm not the only one with this unique idea. So last night, I recalled Peretti Oxford Flake and decided it would make a nice addition to my cellar. Sure enough, when I went to their website, I found out its out of production. Are there any VA flakes that aren't affected by McClelland's exit? FYI, my "cellar" consists of boxed tins and mason jars that I store in my son's closet.
