Hello everyone! I just stumbled upon this forum and am happy to be a new member. A little backstory.. I only started smoking a pipe around a month ago. It has been a long time interest of mine as it brings back memories from smelling my grandfather smoking his pipes. My wife bought me a cheap Missouri Meerschaum hardwood pipe for $5 and i picked up 3 ounces of different house blends from a local cigar and pipe shop. Although it was a little frustrating at first learning to pack (Still hit or miss, but miles better than my first week) and a few cases of tongue bite the head scratching is waning and the enjoyment and relaxing of smoking a pipe has taken hold. I planned on again on going to my local cigar and pipe shop with the intentions of buying a new pipe for around $50.. before I did I randomly checked a local auctioneer company that has a website and does online bid style auctions for local estate sells. It just so happened an auction starting the next day had a pipe and various collectables lot.. meant to be? I thought so. I won the auction and spent a little more than the $50 I was going to spend on a single pipe but I got 10 pipes, lots of pipe cleaning tools including a British Buttner in the original case with instructions, old Hohner Harmonicas unplayed in the original box, some coins, a table lighter dated 1949, some very old little pocket books about identifying and uses of various trees, old unused knife sharpening blades and quite a bit more, but I think you get the point. The pipes have for sure been smoked before but appear to have been babied. I am still absorbing everything I can find on deep cleaning them before I undergo that task as I don't want to learn any regrettable lessons the hard way. I have googled the majority of pipes I bought, some with a decent amount of information and some very little. At least a few so far are said to be nice pipes. I will leave my introduction with what the pipe labels are and a picture. If there is anything you can tell me about any of them that stand out please do, and let me know how I came out. Thanks much! 1) Stanwell REGD No 969-48 "90" (Smooth and very nice looking) 2) Stanwell REGD No 969-48 "90" This one is "sandblasted" I believe is the proper term and says Hand Cut on the stem. 3) Lloyds Made in London England 212 4) GEFAPIP 701 France 23S 5) Mastersen Freehand Briar Israel 6) The Doodler - has a star on the stem 7) Comoy's Made in England 337 -The GuildHall London Pipe 8) Dr. Grabow Color Duke T 2461905 9) Foldable pocket pipe maybe? The only thing it says is Made In Italy

Welcome here on TBP. Your pipes look good for their price. If you know anything about pipe restoration, then you have a really nice haul. Judging from the pics, a little TLC should restore these to like new condition.

Welcome. You did very well. Those Stanwells and that Comoy are going to be workhorses for you. The other pipes are also good.

Welcome. Clean those things up and you will have some good smokers there. And you might want to check YouTube for some videos about the salt and alcohol treatment to clean the bowls. I used it on a couple of pipes recently (but substituted cognac for the alcohol) and it worked pretty good.

Nice haul, you did very well!
Local auctions are a great way to look for pipes... usually a 20% commission, but when you are the only one bidding, it makes for a great opportunity, and there is no shipping involved.
Plus... you get to physically handle the product.
Some great auctions in Pa. and upper Midwest.

Greetings from Arkansas, those are some nice pipes. The "foldable pipe" you are referring to is actually a vest pipe. Not sure what brand just from the picture but it is designed to fit in the pocket of a vest for "on the go" smoking. Not sure how they actually smoke, I've never had one but it is definitely an interesting piece.

welcome to the forum - that's an awesome find you stumbled on. I hope they smoke as good as some of them look.
Also glad you're moving in the right direction with respect to your hobby. Persevere, and if you're ever stuck or frustrated - come here and let us know...there are plenty of experienced pipe smokers who can help you out (not me - I'm still a newbie, but there are many others).

Thanks much for the kind words everyone.
I feel like I have been cleaning pipes non-stop since I got them hah. I just finished a salt and vodka treatment on several a bit ago and a few still kinda reek.
I do have an absolute favorite.. I fight with letting the pipe rest. It is one of the Stanwell 90s.. A few minutes with that thing and my shoulders just turn to mush. It is amazing the tension released by just turning the world and electronics off and just enjoying smoking a pipe.

It certainly takes you back to a simpler time, and it is a good way to unplug from the world and really think about things.
My Grandma lived in the typical midwestern city with the old stone porches, easy to converse with a neighbor at night...I remember her talking to a guy named Barney and his wife, (1960's) he was a pipe smoker, and he would smoke and I shuttled grandma's cookies to them and they would talk on a whole range of topics...it would be nice if we could return to that.

What a great auction win. Congratulations.
The two Stanwells were designed by the venerable Sixten Ivarsson, the Grand Old Man of Danish pipe-making. The stamping of the reg. no. was discontinued somewhere in the late '60s/early '70s, so your pipes have some years on them. Do the stems have the 'S' or the crowned 'S'..? It might be one of each, since the pipes do not look quite identical. The 'S' only is the oldest as the crowned 'S' was registered with the Danish Trade Mark Office in November 1957.
I have one which is 42 years old and it's an excellent smoker. By now, it's saturated with Yellow Capstan.
I do hope that you'll post photos when you have restored them to their former glory.

Both of the 90's have a crowned S. I have only smoked out of the smooth 90. I got ahead of myself and did not put Vaseline on its stem properly so the white on the logo came out but honestly don't much care.. I won't be getting rid of it. I have since learned though and properly kept all other logos intact. What shape are the 90's considered? I am positive it will be the main shape I look for.. I just love how it has a bit of weight and feel to it. I have a tendency to prefer bulkier type hobby items as my guitars can prove with 11/12 gauge strings.. I like to fight my guitar a little.

Thanks for the 'S' reply. I forget the vaseline applying ever so often. No big deal. I have a couple of pens with which to refreshen logos, but I rarely use them. I don't know what the shape is called. A squashed tomato..? (Basil Stevens describes it as a 'Freehand'). Maybe you'll like this shape as well, no. 91. Sixten Ivarsson's Stanwell design based on his 'Ukulele' shape from the very early 60s.
