My answer is nothing fantastic but simply on my own property but indoors. My wife does not want it in the house at all and I'm OK with that. On really hot and humid days its just not enjoyable to me and come winter, I can see really cold days being off-putting. Today it's raining. My hope is one day to have the money to put up a small shed or a pole building as a garage with room to section off a piece of it to setup a throw rug with two or three arm chairs. Easily cooled with a basic window air unit and heated with maybe a fake fireplace that is also a space heater. Just a small space I can smoke in bad weather with a book or with a friend or two.

I'm working on the wife for a shed just like that! It'll happen sooner or later. Then we can get some easy chairs, light up, and discuss the painting of "The Old Man of the Sea" that my grandmother made, which will be hanging in the most prominent place.

Right now, I'd like to be in a log cabin in the woods with winter raging outside. I would want to be lounging in nice comfortable chair in front of a raging fire with a nice brandy and my new collection of M. R. James old English ghost stories. Lonnie-Dog would be sleeping in my lap, and Jessica would be in the chair opposite of me bundled up in blankets, drinking coffee and reading.

My patio is without a roof, which makes star gazing great, but smoking in less than decent weather, not so great. I’ve been contemplating a small smoking shed, 6x8 or so. A window hvac unit and minimal lighting. Perfect for those days of less than great weather.

So here's a sappy sentimental story.
There's a book that most likely none of you have ever heard of - "Rascal", by Sterling North. It's a memoir written by an older man, of when he was an 11 year old boy in rural Wisconsin circa 1918, and the year he shared with a pet raccoon named... Well, that's obvious.
I found a first edition of this book when I was a 10 year old boy browsing the used book tent one August at the local county fair, in rural IL. I wouldn't be able to count how many times I've read it since then, and read it aloud to my boys. Sterling, see, lived and was describing my dream childhood, which I ended up emulating more closely than anyone probably has a right to hope for. I even ended up with an orphaned pet racoon named... Well, that's obvious.
But really, this damn book has influenced a lot of my life, I think. A lot of the ideals of peacefulness and simplicity that I find in rural countryside or forests and fields were, I think, formed by this book. And I never thought about it until recently, but I'll bet it had an influence on me being drawn to the pipe, as well. There's a scene of the book where Sterling and Rascal are prowling up the Brule River (a famous trout river in the north woods) and they round a bend in late afternoon light and come upon a small lake formed by the Brule, with a perfect log cabin on the bank, smoke curling from the chimney... And hip-deep in the lake is a fly fisherman tossing a dry fly with a split bamboo rod, and "He was smoking a pipe and appeared at peace with the universe", as the line goes.
I smoke a pipe. Outside, preferably. I'm a sucker for log homes, preferably on quiet late - afternoon lakes. I'm a fly fisherman. This damn book. ;-)
So, if I could dream up ANYWHERE to smoke a pipe? I could do worse than to imagine standing hip deep in cool water, tossing a royal coachman to an early - evening rise, my cabin behind me with the fireplace already warming up, as a boy and his pet racoon come around the lower bend just in time to watch me hook up a nice fat brown...
That's being greedy. But we're dreaming, right? ;-)

I have been in that exact situation. Unfortunately, we were snowed in with a couple of friends who were, unfortunately on the edge of divorce. Ugh, that had to be miserable! It was Christmas week of 79. We were snowed in and the dog, a very sweet Doberman pincher, was having gastric issues and kept chasing us onto the porch in 14 degree weather. They say that was the last time they had a decent snow in the area. And the parrot would start screaming curses at 3am every morning. Ever seen the movie "Bedazzled" with Dudley Moore? Phlatttttt!
