You don't taste the tobacco? Please elaborate, LL. I agree with you on tongue bite, milk does help, but the best cure is good smoking technique (which comes with time) and finding blends that are compatible with your body chemistry.

I just taste smoke. Irish mixture...smoke. Rich dark flake... Smoke. Ennerdale flake... Soapy smoke. There are some, like cube and orange dream where I can taste something different, but that's about it.

I don't THINK I am. I'm not like a train at all. I try to sip (although maybe I take too much smoke). But if I slow down any more than I do the pipe will go out.

Neat Thread!
Being as most of my pipe smoking is up in the mancave or out on my deck, weather permitting, and almost always in the afternoon or evening, I hardly ever drink coffee with my pipes. Not that I don't like coffee, usually drink a pot of it a day, but almost always in the mornings and early afternoon.
If I'm on the golf course smoking Cigars and Pipes, I usually am sipping Scotch and drinking a beer.
At home it's usually Scotch or Bourbon and Water.
If I'm smoking a cigar, Cognac is my preference.
During the winter I usually drink a lot of Earl Grey Tea with my Pipes & Cigars.

Water or strong coffee seems to work for me.
I wish I would have started pipe smoking before I quit drinking alcohol 10 1/2 months ago. Im sure this would have went nicely with my glass of room temperature, straight, Jack Daniels or some of the dark beers that I used to enjoy.

Lots of people seem to use tobacco pipes as a way to get off one thing or another. Good luck to you.

Coffee in the morning and scotch in the evening. It's no coincidence that most of my pipe buying is late at night.

I agree. We recently started getting Kerry Gold butter in our area and it knocks the socks off any butter I've been able to get locally.

Sometimes coffee in the morning.
I do not want to combine pleasures otherwise I won't have much to do the rest of the day. LOL!

I've heard from a number of folks that drinking milk during a pipe helps your palate to taste the tobacco better. One good friend swears by it.
For me, it's either coffee, or....coffee.

I cannot drink alcohol and smoke together, it just rudes out my tongue and I can't taste anything. My brother's hobby is mixed drinks and he introduced me to the negroni - sweet vermouth+compari+gin. Wonderful drink. Wonderful to taste, wonderful to look at. So pretty. And two negroni and for some reason everyone in the room is more interesting to me. Then if i wait a bit after my last drink, I'll have a pipe and thoroughly enjoy how interesting everyone is.

If there is a tobacco that is not complimented by a cup of coffee, I have yet to smoke it.

My favorite refreshing drink for 40 years has been just Campari and tonic. Sometimes with a dash of orange bitters. Also great with a pipe. And, a pretty big one is not likely to be sedating.
