you know the exact day? How come? Back when I was a teenager, my buddy Steve Parsons was trying for weeks to get me to try pipe smoking, knowing I had my father’s old pipe. He wanted someone to enjoy smoking with. Finally, he said, “Just try it, and if you don’t like it, I’ll never bug you again about it.” I said, “Anything to shut you up, Steve.” On June 20, 1974, he had a small still which was brewing his alcohol, and we were checking it about that time. The reason I remember the day is obvious. The reason I know the exact time I had my first bowl of pipe tobacco (1:30 p.m) is because I'm an infamous clock watcher, and when I lit up for the first time, I looked at my watch as I often do, and in this case, to record the moment so I could bitch Steve out if I hated it, which I obviously didn't. Btw, the tobacco he handed was Borkum Riff Bourbon Whiskey, which was half decent in those days if you puffed slowly. Steve wanted me to try the batch, and I said, "You are out of your freakin' mind, buddy. You made it, you try it." He wouldn't. He fed a sample to a mouse, and the mouse died. That ended that experiment. But, I enjoyed that tobacco, and was forever hooked on pipe smoking. I did bitch Steve out after high school when he quit smoking, and I was a lone smoker. I never let him forget it to this day.

Lit my very first bowl On November 30, 2014 After coming out of a showing of Dumb and Dumber To.
Lets just say my starting smoking was the highlight of that day. Boy was that movie a letdown.

2003 for me.
I'm surprised we don't have any 1950s entries. Not even '58 or '59 ?

I voted mid 90s but the answer is deceiving.
As a kid like 10 years old or so, my dad got me and my brothers small little corn cob pipes which we loved.
In the 80s I took up smoking pipe for a little less than a year, and wondered away from it.
In the mid 90s I took up cigars, and then pipes. Been smoking ever since.
It is only recently that I joined not only pipe smoking, but also the "hobby of pipe smoking". Until then i smoked my Mixture 79 and my match Brindley's Mixture and my cigars and concentrated on other things. In particular I never consulted the internet about it.
But then three or four years ago I started to really pay attention, try stuff, and poke around the internet for information and opportunities.

April 19, 2018 at roughly 4:30 pm.
I know that because I joined here April 19th at 6:13 pm.
My first pipe was awful and I knew it had to be better. I joined here shortly after and the rest is history.
Man have I learned a lot...

One thing might skew the results would be that the older codgers are not going to the internet to talk about pipe smoking. Nothing to see, nothing to talk about.
I only talk about it on line, and only here. In life I don't talk about it at all with anyone.
Not that there are many who want to hear me.

A friend of my Dad's, who smoked a pipe since "the war" (which was WWII), used to look away when i asked anything about his pipe smoking. He would never have posted about it here.
He would have posted endlessly about restoring vintage tractors and mechanized farm equipment.

Sometime in the early 1960's. I can't remember the exact year. I do remember the pipe was a real basket case of a Dr. Grabow given to me by my grandfather. My first and only pipe tobacco for a long time was Prince Albert. I still like it and I still like Dr. Grabow pipes.

11/22/17 My aunt had just come to visit me for thanksgivings, she brought with her my great grandads Medico Guardsman and brought me to Racine & Laramie in SD to purchase my first house blend which was called Altair. Light aromatic Danish cavendish; flue-cured base with some black cavendish and burley, notes of rum and vanilla. (From the site) It was very nice blend and a hospitable intro to what has grown into such an appreciation, for many things not just tobacco and pipes. I’m glad I was able to recall this day, I’m terrible with dates. But I will never forget the subtle enjoyment I had, sitting on a rock looking at the stars out in the east county enjoying an old, simple briar that was somehow still around for sentimental reasons. Thinking of the guy I never met who enjoyed this same pipe. She was happy to be passing it on to me. A day I will not forget, thanks to my aunt and the patch for all the great stories and information since that I’ll be able to pass on. Be well patchers! Let us not forget he subtle enjoyments we have. Like remembering and sharing this story.thanks.👊🏼

By numbers yes, but you had online tutoring to figure out pipe smoking. Us pre internet smokers have you on years.😁 As to a future, all of the FDA and WHO garbage saddens me for the new guys.

I started in the Fall of '79. Started with aromatics from local B&M. I remember being so disapponted that something that started off tasting so sweet and good could end so bitter and harsh. So became disinterested until around '86 when I started smoking pipes once in a while during a few winters. Then actually had my first introduction to non-aromatics about 2 years ago, and am now hooked. Oh yes, I voted too.

You have me there, bud. I actually started in highschool, but gave up after only a few months. My only tobacco was Middleton Cherry and I had no mentor- Can you blame me? Hahaha Sure glad I gave it another go.
