So, I haven't found very many aromatics that appeal to me. I don't like the after taste of some of the toppings used or the tobacco just doesn't taste like what it is supposed to. I have decided to keep looking/trying aromatics until I have a few more that I can add into the rotation or at least enjoy when in the mood. I do like Sleepy Hollow, Celtic Talisman, Christmas Spirit, Corn Cob Pipe and a Button Nose and Black Gold (chocolate). I would really like to find a cherry and a vanilla that I really enjoy. I don't like Cult Blood Red Moon or Lane 1-Q. I get that after taste that I very much dislike...almost chemical. What do you all recommend? Your recommendations do not have to be either cherry or vanilla; can be anything as long as it's good.

For vanilla, you might want to consider Paul's Pipe Shop Arrowhead.

I only smoke a few aromatics but my favorite is Rattray Bagpiper's Dream. Various cuts of very high quality tobaccos with a cognac topping. The room note is to die for and it stays lit very well.

If I may play devil's advocate ... why keep spending time on them when they don't appeal? Many of us left them far behind due to the reasons you've stated. Focus on quality tobacco that actually tastes as such and isn't covered with unnecessary toppings. If you want a nice VaBur with a mild fruit note, try some University Flake. Kendal Cream Deluxe Flake is also a great smoke that some consider aromatic. Good luck and happy puffing!

Obviously trying Penzance would be unique or Germain's Plum, but I have enough to keep me happy, so the term must does not apply exactly

Everyone has different tastes so this will be hard... I suppose you try some of our favourites and maybe you'll stumble on one you like.
For me, my favourite is MacBarren Cube silver (it's difficult to get the bronze or gold here for some reason). Maybe that might hit the spot for you.

Oh, some of my must tries are ones I have purchased. don was smoking Hal O' the Wind a lot, so I have a tin of that unopened. Bavarian Blend based on someone's recommendation.

I honestly haven't bought anything aromatic for a long time and was just starting to get the bug to try something new that I may like.

You might want to try Peter Heinrich's Reserve Cru #4. A tasty & well behaved smoke that is not nearly as sweet as its description implies.

The Cube and Halberg series were discontinued by MacBaren, which is why they're hard to find.

Your recommendations do not have to be either cherry or vanilla; can be anything as long as it's good. Here's a few aros I'll recommend: Sutliff Black Cordial (a black cherry blend), Sutliff Chocolate Supreme, Wilke #515 and Rumcake, MacBaren Vanilla Cream, and Edward G, Robinson's Pipe Blend. I don't know if this fits your interest, but MacBaren Modern Virginia is a fav of mine. Here's my review: The first thing you notice when you open the tin is the sweet fruity topping and Virginias. The yellow and dark Virginias offer some citrus with a few grassy notes and a little earth, and comprises the majority of the tobacco (70%). The dark cavendish is Virginia based, and adds a citrus note with a touch of honey, and bare hit of spice. There’s a little burley (10%) that is nutty with a slight sweetness. The tobaccos are pressed for thirty days and the flake is very easy to break apart for folding and stuffing in your bowl, or rubbing out as you please. The topping is apricot and a hint of pineapple, and is noticeable in every puff, though it’s not strong enough to overwhelm the inherent properties of the tobaccos. I also get a mild fig taste. The topping slightly diminishes after the half way point, and the tobacco flavor is just a little more obvious from then on. The flake is a touch fuller in the Virginia component than the loose cut. It’s a mild to medium very smooth and rather creamy smoke that burns at a moderate pace with few relights, no harsh or dull spots, no bite and no dottle. The nic-hit is mild. Has a pleasant after taste and room note. An all day smoke.

If you want to avoid chemical flavors from aromatic blends I would recommend trying some naturally sweet straight Virginia flakes. One that is available at smokingpipes is Astleys no 109 Medium Flake. It is one of the first flakes I ever smoked almost 20 years ago and I still smoke it as part of my regular rotation. It is sweet tasting and has no bite. Another great naturally sweet flake is Dunhill Flake. Again easy to find at SP.
I hear you about that chemical taste that many aro's have, I believe it is the amount of PG being used which can cause that. I have a big time sweet tooth and have a bunch of VA flakes in my cellar that satisfy me.
edit. I just saw jiminks post above me about Modern Va flake. I forgot about that one and highly recommend it as well. Now I need to go find my stash of it.

Some of the best aromatics that I have ever smoked are from the Gatlinburlier in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. They sell by mail order or from their website: www.gatlinburlier.com/ Some of the ones that I have tried and like include: Mountain Mall Mix, Chimney Smoke, Frank's Blend and Mellow Moonshine.

There's also Gawith Hoggarth Brown Flake Vanilla, and Cherry Cream Flake. Both very good with not much "Lakeland".

I have to agree with this, though not sure my taste buds operated on cue. This was a major flavor blast for me. I noted everything short of the kitchen sink in it, and I mean that in a good way. It did behave well, as Mike said. Not overly sweet, too. Every puff was an adventure for me. I am not the seasoned smoker as many are here, but for me to catch all the notes speaks well of the tobacco.

People don't sing songs around the campfire about it yet... yet

For an aro that takes a deliciously different path I very highly recommend Shortcut to Mushrooms. Once sufficiently left to dry... to die for!

I had a bit of a hankering for a good aro a few months back. 4th Generation Family Reserve was a lucky accident. Nice Va Bur base with a light topping that can be smelled more than tasted. Really nice stuff.

Almost forgot Edward G Robinson until I saw Jim's reply. It really is a wonderful smoke.

Erinmore Flake is an aromatic, but doesn't seem like it is...I highly recommend it. From jiminks: Hearth and Home classic Burley Kake is another good one. www.tobaccoreviews.com/blend/3219/hearth-home-classic-burley-kakeBoth are aromatics, but after smoking them, you feel like you have smoked tobacco rather than having been a room aromatizer.

GL Pease "The Virginia Cream" has real tobacco flavor with a Vanilla Bourbon topping. I think it offers a nice balance and has a bit of body to it. Many aromatics are very light and airy, but not so for this one.
