All this causes a case of "Recherchě du tobac Perdu", to steal a phrase.

I just started a bowl of Wilke Best Make, and I really like it. It is an English with burley, and really good. It has a 3.4 rating on TR. Not many top that.

Dunhill London Mixture had probably been my favorite English since I’ve first smoked it. Nightcap is excellent too.

Frog Morton On The Town was my first English mistress. I only have two tins to last the rest of my life, so I had better move on. haha
Black House is my go-to. Number two is probably Skiff Mix. I have so many on the shelf I have yet to even try though, so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.
Two very notable competitors I should mention are Peter Stokkebye: Propper English and for those of you who are mourning the Lost of Frog Morton Cellar, grab a tin of SG:Bothy Flake. Not really even close to similar, but it is a rich blend with Latakia and a hint of whiskey.
I also hold the venerable Nightcap in high regard. And how could I have forgotten 10-Till? A blend that smolders like a gothic mystery novel.

My top two non-Germain made (Penzance/Margate/Pelican) English blends are: - Old Dublin, and
- Black Mallory.
I consider Old Dublin to be Presbyterian Mixture's and Frog Morton on the Town's big brother - all three are Basma Nirvana. Black Mallory is a wonderful full English blend. Both Old Dublin and Black Mallory have plenty of Latakia without going overboard.

If Elizabethan mixture or early morning pipe are considered English blends (which i think they are), then those are my top 2... That I've tried. Early Morning Pipe is a light, Oriental forward English (i.e., Latakia) blend and is great. Elizabethan Mixture is a Virginia & Perique (VaPer) blend.

That IS interesting. I could swear I've heard Elizabethan be referred to as an English somewhere before, but that person could also be incorrect. Is there an official definition anywhere? I'm going to risk getting stoned so keep these definitions in mind with lots of leeway and a grain of salt but here goes: English: oriental (turkish), latakia, and virginia. Its subtypes are - Balkan: an English blend that is oriental forward or in the style of Balkan Sobranie. Scottish: oriental, latakia, virginia, and cavendish (usually brown). Irish: an English blend with an aromatic touch (also called an English Aromatic) American English: oriental, latakia, virginia, and burley Perique is sometimes added to English blends to 'spice' the virginia i.e. make up for the fact that the virginia hasn't been aged as much as would be ideal for the blend. In the case of Elizabethan it's just virginia and perique i.e. a Vaper. Maryland and other varieties can also be added to 'spice' the other tobaccos. When these extra tobaccos are added, they are sometimes jokingly called Kitchen Sink blends. Thank you, zambini for your definition. Much obliged.

It might just be one of those internet "facts", though. STG could go on making them and just rename them. 'Melissa Bethan' 'Croydon Mixture' Late Morning Pipe' Your Mixture No. 966' Night Headgear' and so on and so forth.

The only comment I would add is that, in my experience, Scottish blends usually have unsweetened black Cavendish vs brown, but I'm sure that depends on which blends you've been smoking.

Like David, Germain's King Charles Smoking Mixture hits me between the eyes, extremely dependable smoke this one. G.L. Pease Quiet Nights is an American English with just a dash of Perique. It's richer and more complex than King Charles, my favorite Pease offering.

It's richer and more complex than King Charles, my favorite Pease offering. I too like the Quiet Nights for the same reason. I realized that my choices of Nightcap and SV are because I can play rough with them and not lose flavor. I have tended to treat KC and QN very gently when I smoke them. Maybe I don't have to, but treating them thus just works really well.
