I have been getting into English a lot lately. I have had some good stuff. What are your top two English blends? I ask for two, as many of you may immediately choose Penzance. Giving a second choice would help others (like me) make a choice of in the future.

I'm going to state the obvious and say Skiff followed by Presbyterian. I read your review on it. In the end it sounded like you liked it, but it was not totally obvious. Mine, Nightcap Match (even over DH) and Super Value English. King Charles would make it as number one, but I jaded my decision on availability

You've really liked that tin of King Charles.

C&D Byzantium. Nice latakia flavor enhanced by Orientals, not a super overwhelming latakia. C&D Star of the East flake. As above, but with a bit more latakia presence. The flake is much better than the ribbon. Give you a third -- Captain Earles Ten Russians. Actually made by C&D. All the above in spades.

One of these days I gotta open up my Black House and White Knight, I keep hearing so much about them... I have so much open already, though, so they'll have to wait a while longer.

At this time. Dan Tobacco Midnight Ride STC John Cotton #1 I had to look up the Midnight Ride (while noticing DaVinci 500 G out of stock and glad I have mine) Waiting to open some of the John Cottons. I am pretty sure they are made by the people who make Murray's, which I also really like.

If Elizabethan mixture or early morning pipe are considered English blends (which i think they are), then those are my top 2... That I've tried.

G.L. Pease Gaslight. It's red Virginia heavy and I am a very big red Virginia fan, so I may be biased.

I like Black House, but I didn't realize it was an English. I am not sure what blends I have smoked that are a true English. #400 from Wilke is pretty good.

I like my tobacco on the sweet side (naturally via the VA not by adding goop to it). These might not be considered English but they are the two I have liked best from my Lat adventures. Balkan Sasieni and Plum Pudding. I have only started smoking Lat blends within the last 4 months so I have nothing really to compare them with from years or recipes gone by.

If Elizabethan mixture or early morning pipe are considered English blends (which i think they are), then those are my top 2... That I've tried. This is where it gets interesting.... I don't think it's is the case in the UK and Ireland, but in the US "English" blend essentially means something with Latakia, Virginias, and Orientals, and maybe Perique. So according to that definition Elizabethan wouldn't count. Then there are Scottish, Balkan, and Oriental blends...

I could swear I've heard Elizabethan be referred to as an English somewhere before, but that person could also be incorrect. Is there an official definition anywhere? If that is the case then my top would be emp.

I could swear I've heard Elizabethan be referred to as an English somewhere before, but that person could also be incorrect. Is there an official definition anywhere? I'm going to risk getting stoned so keep these definitions in mind with lots of leeway and a grain of salt but here goes: English: oriental (turkish), latakia, and virginia. Its subtypes are - Balkan: an English blend that is oriental forward or in the style of Balkan Sobranie. Scottish: oriental, latakia, virginia, and cavendish (usually brown). Irish: an English blend with an aromatic touch (also called an English Aromatic) American English: oriental, latakia, virginia, and burley Perique is sometimes added to English blends to 'spice' the virginia i.e. make up for the fact that the virginia hasn't been aged as much as would be ideal for the blend. In the case of Elizabethan it's just virginia and perique i.e. a Vaper. Maryland and other varieties can also be added to 'spice' the other tobaccos. When these extra tobaccos are added, they are sometimes jokingly called Kitchen Sink blends.
