Quick update:
Of the various irons I have in the fire, I have gotten the following:
Company 1: which I have been waiting to hear back from since the day my layoff was announced should have a req opened today specifically for me. Long story behind that, I have been working with this customer from the support side of the house for a few years now and their project lead preferred it when their cases came to me. A buddy of mine who I used to work with works for them as a project contractor and let them know I am on the market and the tri-athlete manager asked if I was a runner. This should come through today.
Company 2: the R&D manager that also got laid off hooked me up with one of his contacts at a head hunting agency, who came up wit a solid lead for me. Had a phone screening with their HR director yesterday and a phone interview with the hiring manager at 10:30 this morning.
Company 3: former BMC inside recruiter caught wind that I was in the market and reached out to me last week. Met him for coffee last Friday, he then had me talk to a recruiter working for him about a position in the company they work for. Had a lovely conversation with her after my coffee with him. Got an email about phone interview with the hiring manager THERE, which is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow.
Still looking, still need those fingers crossed.
Updates will be posted.

Update 4/20/18: Just got off the phone with the hiring manager at TraceLink.com. very positive interview. Definitely sounds like a person I could work for. Liked what he had to say about the company, the team he is assembling, the need he has for a support engineer. Could be a really good fit. He wants to bring me in for face to face interviews next. Two for two with the phone interviews. ExChef

Today’s update:
Our hero quickly finds himself in the catbird’s seat. A good set of face to face interviews at ThreatStack.com yesterday and the overture of an offer by the end of the week.
Later this morning, there will be a conversation with a company that is creating a job JUST FOR HIM and what it will entail. Salary band, etc. Slight bump in this road is that while the FTE job requisition goes through they want to bring him on as a contactor so as to not lose him to another company. Full confidence that the req will come through but might take a couple more weeks.
Additionally, today, there is the face to face interviews at tracelink.com, these should be as fruitful as yesterday’s.
More updates to follow, stay tuned. Same Bat time, same Bat channel.

Today's update:
Late in the day yesterday, after another successful few hours of face to face interviews, TraceLink reached out and requested references. They will be checking into them today and I'll likely have an offer by Monday.
The FTE req that was being opened to specifically hire me, is supposed to be completed today, so that offer should be on the table without needing to do the contractor route.
Surprisingly, have not heard from the third company ThreatStack, of course the hiring manager did tell me he'd be out of the office today.
Anyway, I'll happily post any status changes and truly appreciate the support being shown for a new member!

Long delay between updates, several changes on the horizon.
TraceLink backed out of the race right after asking for references, cited change in direction and looking to staff with more junior support engineers.
The company that is opening inte FTE req has signed, sealed and all but delivered. Apparently, it’s held up in HR waiting to be posted.
Threat Stack reached out to me late yesterday, 7pm, to ask me to come into Boston to have lunch with the hiring manager. There have been delays in this being processed for a couple of reasons, one of which is the HR guy misunderstanding my mentioning the length of commute during rush hour and the time away from family as lack of interest in this job on my part. That was cleared up, but there were further delays on their side and now lunch in Boston today. I doubt they would ask me to come into Boston, knowing that it’s at least an hour without rush hour traffic to contend with to turn me down for the position.
So, there you have it, gone from being courted by three, to two and now delay tactics and patience.

Thank you! Well, they have extended a verbal offer, a very good one no less. I have reached out to the company with the req that was opened for me to ask them to push a bit harder as I have to make a decision. Biggest problem with the job offer I just got is it’s commuting 2hrs each way to the office every day, no work at home option in the near term. ExChef

Agreed, well done to get the job offer. A 2 hour commute doesn't sound pleasant though.
If you get the other one, will that be a much shorter commute?

On the topic, the owner of company I retired from talked to me yesterday about coming back. $160k/year against not needing than much money and not having to go to the office every day should be an easy call, but 59.5 years of work out of 68 total should be enough. I told him I might consider 2 days a week. I am 4 years older than the owner, and we have both mellowed considerably over the last 20 years.

On a somewhat smilar note... I can start drawing my pension, but since I am many moons away from medicare to maintain medical insurance benefits post retirement, is $1,100.00 bones per month. looking for a retirement job, bud sadly...long gone are the days when you walk in the door and sell yourself, I am good on closing the deal in that environment. Now at 57, some desk jockey conjures up an image of what I look like...for the most part, that is far from reality...

I hope everything works out well for you, Exchef. Is relocating the family closer to the job an option? It's hard to uproot kids, but often it can be good in the long run. I'm a military brat, so moving every two to four years was commonplace for me.
