I too should not be drinking any alcohol beverages, sometimes rarely. For the most part I don’t unless I’m under a lot of stress.....like LATELY!!!

I don't think Jack Daniels is a bad whiskey, but there are at least two Tennessee bourbons that taste the same at half the price. Their marketing is out of the world. My problem comes with their close advertising relationship with Harley Davidson and the Harley Lifestyle. Alcohol and motorcycles don't mix, a do-rag won't protect your head, and loud pipes just piss people off and make them hate all motorcyclists. This is a particularly circular reasoning of mine. Other distillers don't associate their products with driving, and other motorcycle manufacturers don't advertise a drinking lifestyle. I have imbibed my fair share of JD, and I won't do it again. "Loud pipes" may "piss people off" which really doesn't matter to the rider but "loud pipes" do save riders lives and I can attest to that on many, many occasions. And no one is supporting riding and drinking and if we so choose to drink, we don't ride. To each their own, I guess 👍😎 You care about your pretty little life, while giving the finger to the greater society that raised you to be a decent person. Only Harley riders believe that crap, while eschewing the helmets that are proven to be much more effective.

I see a nuanced difference, when electric cars first came on the scene people were walking out in front of the moving vehicles and in the din of city traffic, I can see where a quiet bike can present a hazard for the operator. However, I was on Monterey's Cannery row back about 2000, when a guy on a supercharged chopper rode in on what I believe were straight pipes...even not goosing the throttle it felt like your eardrums were going to explode, but he chose to continuously goose it to prove how cool he was.... Another time, I exited the freeway where the two right lanes turn into three, and my outside lane gave me the option into turning into the middle lane of the city street. Looked over my shoulder, no one there....got into the lane to my right, the guy with loud pipes had used his momentum hauling butt on the off-ramp to glide quietly into the lane that had been empty a second earlier. He flipped me off and raced in front of me.... (then showing me how loud his pipe were)as we came to a red light. Got off his bike and went all dramatic like "I am a bad arse biker" and called me out, I purposely stayed back and watched his antics...because I had my .45 on my hip and if I was going to accommodate his stupidity, I just brought a gun to a fist fight...the guy was a real douchebag wanna be...he had all the "I am a badass garb on". I have a lot of friends that ride bikes, all of them are pretty cool...it is the posers (wanting to telegraph that they are on par with Mongol/ Hell's Angel in the street cred department) while they toil away in a cubicle during the week. I have seen plenty of examples of people in cars not looking out for bike riders also, or not giving a damn, putting the motorcyclist's lives in jeaporady. Common sense and decency should be exercised on both sides of the issue.

Thank you for your clueless condescension. No one said anything about "giving the finger" to anyone. And, for your information, I'm a very "descent person". Loud pipes saves lives and that's a fact, like it or not. The choice to wear a helmet is a personal decision and I respect everyone's personal decisions regardless whether or not I agree with them. Your disdain for bike riders is clear and misplaced as you've obviously never ridden a Harley. Perhaps you're talking about the 1% which may or may not fit your mold but to cast a broad brush on a group of people is just downright simple minded.
Just a few facts for you: 1) No manufacturer can guarantee that their helmets will withstand an impact of greater than 15 mph. THAT'S A FACT! 2) Most motorcycle accidents are due to carelessness of a vehicle (car/truck) or an inexperience rider. Wearing a helmet in either scenarios will not help the accident victim. 3) About 80% of motorcycle accidents are NOT on a Harley.
4) Full-faced helmets WILL NOT allow you to see peripherally, limits your hearing and adds enough weight to your head that it’s extremely difficult to move your head while operating a motorcycle. 5) And, even with wearing a helmet, your head is far too heavy and your neck cannot support that weight when being thrown off a bike at 40 or 60 mph; your neck could snap.
5) When asked what happened by an office to the vehicle driver, the most common reply was, "I never saw the motorcycle". Anything that promotes awareness such as loud pipes does save lives. 6) The average Harley riders age is around 50 which means a much more responsible rider, not more experienced, just more responsible whereas... 7) most other riders are crazy youth with bikes that are way too fast and showing off on highways at ungodly speeds.
Bottom-line.... it's been fun talking about this subject and I doubt any of those facts will enlighten you but I've said my peace and this should probably be dropped and we both move on.

Common sense and decency should be exercised on both sides of the issue. Imagine if you will that you have just no your dream place in the Hill Country. You are enjoying your pipe on the porch while listening to the birds. The Gold Wing club rides by on the up-grade highway on the other side of the hill. You hear a whir and the birds keep singing. Then the out of state HOG chapter rides in and the birds fall from the trees, and you drop your pipe in your lap and burn your cods. You are soon on the phone to the sheriff. Now this continues weekend after weekend. You are now considering calling the real estate agent. The dream home is now a nightmare. At night the HOG group returns from the bar. It's down hill, but in their inebriated state they can't help revving their engines at each other. This is the case in the Texas Hill Country. Some residents got so fed up a few years ago and poured oil on the tightest curves with the 300 foot drop offs. A Yamaha rider was killed and a dozen other riders were seriously injured. Loud pipes cost lives. Non riders lump all motorcyclists together. They want to get you off the road. They laugh when you wreck. You can't hear the pipes from in front if you have your radio on. If you are behind, then you get a headache.

Spoken like a true believer. I have ridden a Harley and was unimpressed. I have been riding for 52 years. I have never ridden without a helmet. My best friend wanted to ride my first bike and I wouldn't give him the key until he put on the helmet. His first act was to pull a wheely and hit his head on the curb. He would have died there without the helmet. See Southpark episode "The F Word"

And your friends accident was because of stupidity and inexperience. He should have never been given the keys as you should have know he was an idiot.

When I was 16, I had my worst drunk ever on SoCo. A buddy and I found a liter in my girlfriend's basement. Must've been there for quite a while, but it was unopened. We drank it one night (might have been July 4th) when my parents were out. I was so drunk, when my girlfriend and her friend arrived, I had to go pass out. But, before I did, I apparently got naked in the living room and proceeded to take a cold shower. I have no recollection of that. I don't drink anymore, but even if I did, I STILL can't even smell SoCo without getting nauseous.

I think Sloe Gin was originally designed as an emetic. If not it should have been.

There is a piece of advice, find a whisky you love (if you are a drinker), and tell everyone. There will be an almost audible sigh of relief as the men now know what to get you for Christmas, and your birthday, and for housewarming gifts, and etc. Takes all your male friends, and some of your female friends, off the hook. I'd like to do a similar thing with tobacco. My thought is to find an OTC that you like, or like enough. Mine is Carter Hall. Then tell everyone. Your non smoking friends are not going to search all over for the tobacco you love, that they cannot pronounce much less remember, that is not available everywhere they think you go to buy tobacco. I make it easy on my friends and I never run out of Carter Hall.

Jack, darn it...you started this thread up again and I have no Southern Comfort in my room. I was never a whiskey or scotch drinker. I’ll stick to the 80 or 100 proof Southern Comfort neat, on the rocks if it’s a warm night. The 100 proof is not as sweet, the 70 proof is the sweetest, everybody’s taste is different.

You are very correct everybody's taste is different and I don't begrudge anybody that like Southern Comfort I'll sit right next to you and watch you drink it as I enjoy mine. Another one I don't like his bird dog bourbon it tastes like hazelnuts to me and I don't like hazelnuts either.

Texans, particularly in the west, were always a polite and dignified people in my experience. Then came the new people from the east and that changed. I used to enjoy my business trips to Midland back in the 1980s.

You care about your pretty little life, while giving the finger to the greater society that raised you to be a decent person. Only Harley riders believe that crap, while eschewing the helmets that are proven to be much more effective. I have seen plenty of examples of people in cars not looking out for bike riders also, or not giving a damn, putting the motorcyclist's lives in jeap. I rode scooters [motorcycles] for many years and when I started , at 16 yo, an older friend who also rode told me this "... EVERY cage [car] driver wants to kill you. Your mother, father and whole family who are cage drivers. Remember this and you will stay rubber side down." In the 20+ years I rode scooters I remembered this and I'm here today !

With texting and people on phones, today it's a war zone when riding. I just sold my Harley and don't miss it anymore because it's just too darn dangerous out there. I started riding at 13 and it was easy and simple riding until technology got involved. I'n done.
