Everyone has a different way of putting flame on tobacco. Here's the evolution of my flame source over the years: I started with Bic lighters. Reliable and cheap, but too aggressive - they kinda "toast" the tobacco. Zippo. Tastes terrible. I only used it for a few days. And yes, I was using the kind of fluid in the black can. Old Boy. OK lighter, but the flame seems to change in intensity. Matches. My go-to these days. Easy to use, really obvious when you start to run low, no taste, and an appropriate flame.
You?

Matches all the way for me. Although I often have to light in the garage to stop the flame being blown out.

I start it off with matches for the accuracy and softness of the flame, then use my Zippo. I let it burn a few seconds and get no adverse taste; I use hardware store naptha for fuel.

...matches... I know lots of folks here love their lighters, but I can't abide anything but matches... seems to me an almost *sacred* part of pipe-smoking...

I have 4 different butane lighters at hand, and one more in the truck. I don't get any noticeable flavor compared to the other methods. Matches give a burning pine flavor that is fine if you like that kind of thing. And they make the room smell like farts. On top of that, the flame goes up to your fingers inside of down towards the tobacco.

PIA however when smoking outdoors. At least for me. It is great fun when camping to use a stick lit from camp fire. Anyone use that beeswax string wick stuff?

I used the hemp wick for a couple months. It works better than matches, but I got tired of the extra step. Apply fire to tobacco, draw smoke from stem. KISS.

inside: paper matches and/or OldBoy Outside: Only Zippo with pipe insert, only yard pipes & not care about rim darkening or even a little scorch

Matches almost exclusively. Bic if it is too windy to manage a light with matches. Always have both on me.

While sitting up in the mancave I use matches and a rollgas almost exclusively.
When golfing, it's a bic
When barbqueing, it's the grill lighter
When I can't find anything else it's the cigar torch. ( I know, I know, heresy... )
I've even rolled up a paper towel or grocery bag, lit em on fire on the grill, and then used them on the briar when I can't find a lighter.
As with everything, moderation and caution are key. ;-)

Completely get it why people who smoke outdoors won't use a Zippo w/ pipe insert because they'll char a rim on a favorite pipe beyond hope; however, they're all I use indoors. A little Nivea Cream before bed will take care of any carbon build up on the rim in the morning.

Hell, I fill 'em right up to the top and light up. It's a little furnace, black happens. When the rim is caked, I know it's broken in.

I use a Zippo with a pipe insert. I don't have an issue with charring my briars. I just clean up the rim with a little saliva when I notice they are getting a little color. I don't worry about charring the rims of my cobs. It adds a bit of character.

Zippo with pipe insert for me. I’ve never charred a rim with one before and I don’t pick up any “taste”.

I haven't - have you? Looks small enough of a diameter so as it will fit in the bowl without charing the rim of the pipe.

Xikar butane lighter with tamp, scraper and poker built in, never without a tool. Like stick matches if I am inside.

I almost always grab a Djeep or some other butane lighter when I want to light a pipe. I've got an Old Boy but tend to not use it as much as I should.

I haven't, but it says in one of the Q&A's that it is not practical for lighting cigars. Person says you have to put it directly on the cigar and you can't get an even light.

The great thing about the zippo is that iconic sound.

Up until today I was using my zippo. I walked out to the shed and realized I left it inside. I didnt feel like going back in so I looked around and found a pack of matches...
I'm pretty sure the zippo is now going to be replaced.
