Here's my review of the Mac Baren's latest product, which will be on sale in the near future.
The nutty, earthy, woody, lightly molasses sweet, mildly chocolatey burleys take the lead over the other components. They also sport a touch of spice and light dryness. The tangy, ripe dark fruity, earthy, very lightly grassy dark Virginias play an important condimental role. There’s also a strand or two of red Virginia in the mix. The lightly spicy, woody, earthy, mildly sweet dark fired Kentucky is a background player. The strength is just past the center of mild to medium, while the taste level falls just short of medium. The nic-hit is a step or so past the mild threshold. No chance of bite or harshness, and has no rough edges. The flakes are a little moist, but I saw no need to dry them. They easily break apart to suit your preference. Burns a little slow, cool and clean with a fairly rich, mostly consistent, woody sweet predominate burley flavor from start to finish. I recommend a wide bowl to enhance the range of nuances this blend has to offer. Leaves little dampness in the bowl, and does require some relights. The after taste is very pleasant, and lightly lingering. Can easily be an all day smoke.

I guess I will have to order some tobacco this month. Thought I was cured. I think you "get" burley better than anyone and I've never been disappointed. Darn you Edit-there I go speed reading. It's not even out yet? Will have to keep checking. Thx again

Thanks for the review Jim! Sounds like a winner. Any idea when this blend will be released here in the USA and who will be carrying it?

Jim turned me onto Sutliff J4 Burley. I went right for a half pound on his advice and then another pound after I tried it.

Thanks for another great review, Jim! I just listed to a Pipes Magazine podcast in which they talked about this blend.

What would you compare this to? Watch City Slices? Edgeworth? Thanks!

A very good and thorough review Jim. I heard the Podcast too and it was my impression that it would become available after the Chicago Pipe Show.

What would you compare this to? Watch City Slices? Edgeworth? Thanks! WC Slices is a stronger blend with a more powerful burley presence. It's about the same strength as Edgeworth, but has more than burley in it, so it's more complicated and nuanced. I enjoy those nuances very much, and this is certainly a blend you can smoke all day. I like that. Sometimes, you just need a blend that is very comfortable without overwhelming your senses, and this is definitely that.

It sounds like one that we will be wishing was available in bulk.

Reading Jim’s 2 latest McB reviews, I felt like a starving prisoner in a cage watching and smelling, while my captor dined on prime rib.

Reading Jim’s 2 latest McB reviews, I felt like a starving prisoner in a cage watching and smelling, while my captor dined on prime rib. Shortly after speaking to Jim on availability of this new blend, I'd sent a "chat" message into the folks at Smoking Pipes customer service about when they were to receive their supply. They pretty much responded immediately stating that "they had no idea. That it will be in-stock when they receive their shipment, and to keep checking their site for availability." Now, I know that they've been contacted about buying, and I know that they've most likely have placed an order, and I know that they've also probably been advised of a potential arrival date at the warehouse. Well, I'm sure they don't want to create a riot

Oh, and I did suggest to the CS rep that they may want to administer a broadcast email to all of their "badge" holders once they place the product online. He stated that he would pass that along to their marketing folks...

In stock @ Iwan Ries as of this morning. I just chatted with CS rep Steve Mawby at SP and they do not have their shipment in yet. He said if it was in, he'd have some in his pipe right now
