This thing is awesome for starting bbqs. Put the charcoal in the top, put a fire lighter on a fireproof surface, light the fire lighter and place the chimney on top. After about 5 mins the coals are well lit and will continue until cooking time. You get the bbq without the taste of lighter fluid. Amazing!

Ive used one for the last 10 years. All you need to light it is some balled up newspaper. No lighter fluid required

Those do work really well! I've switched to wood fires since moving because there is plenty of mesquite and pecan around. Really like the flavor it gives the meat!

Next you're going to say that you used Kingsford Briquettes right? Balled up newspaper, if you really want it to get going faster, spray the newspaper with a little cooking oil before balling it up. This will cause it to burn hotter and longer. ExChef

Charcoal bags are typically 2 or there ply, I separate the layers and use them for the kindling in the bottom, the inner layers obviously have coal dust on them...by the time the charcoal is gone, so is the bag.
I have been using my charcoal chimney for at least 20 years...So simple , it’s genius.

I have used a chimney seemingly forever, but not in the standard way. I use an electric charcoal starter. Before filling the chimney with charcoal if put the starter in on a diagonal. It gets plugged in after the charcoal is added. You don't need to worry about burning a hole in something and there is no nasty smoke from burning paper. www.homedepot.com/p/Electrical-Charcoal-Starter-660-0003/206304002

The sad fact is that charcoal barbecue grills are now illegal here in Toad County NM. $300 fine and 90 days in the hoosegow.
This will be a less tasty summer.

I never knew they were banned in some places. Are you stuck with gas then?

Reasoning? I like pinon charcoal.

I know that I am strange, and I tend to read things in the worst possible context. I was like, "why would you want to start a chimney fire?"

We have no burn days in Maricopa County, but it is more of an advisory than anything, there is no chance of being fined or cited.
Do they have an allowance for a barbecue restaurant in Taos county NM?

Wow. I didn't think it had got that bad in some places in America.

Commercial Smokers located in areas of "defensible space" are exempt. As far as I know there are no Barbecue restaurants in Taos or elsewhere in the county. There were two mobile food trucks which did the barbeque thing. One was a family of Texans who thought they knew something. The other was a Southern Black family who definitely did the right thing. I have not seen either trucks this year.

When the fire hazard situation ends the ban will likely be lifted.

Wow. I didn't think it had got that bad in some places in America. I visited the beach in San Clemente a few years back, and notice offiers in tactical gear spread out down the beach...I asked the store owner if I should get out of there....."no, they are here to enforce the smoking ban, there is a yellow stripe down the sidewalk, if you step over it with a lit cigarette, you wil face a couple hundred dollar fine". They extended the smoking bans in the tunnel/breezeways also...several cities have banned it on public sidewalks...legal on your lawn, criminal once you step on the sidewalk. Since California has deemed tobacco smoke as a "toxic pollutant", I expect that eventually the laws will be more severe...Schwarzennegger and Brown have vetoed the overreaching legislation as tooo broad, but it is a matter of time before they have a governor that agrees with the legislature...after that the ability to remove the law....that would most likely never happen. California is proud to have led the nation in banning smoking in bars and restaurants, so now it is time to hitch up the pants and do some more "leading". One might have to adopt the Ted Taczynski lifestyle eventually in order to evade the Mrs. Kravitz types.. www.ocregister.com/2018/02/12/how-californias-smoking-bans-are-broadening/

Wow. It's crazy that you've got these bans in places of the US but tobacco prices are so low, and yet in the UK our prices are sky high but our bans haven't hit anywhere near that level.

We like cheap stuff in America just don’t buy it or use it. Only for the visitors to see on the shelf. Unless it is marijuana then we are happy to oblige! Tobacco went from a common legal product to the hated and evil product.
My rant is over relax and puff some on that pipe. I didn’t say it out loud.

LL, in Kalifornia their crazy, in New Mexico it's an extreme fire hazard. The rest of the country is something else.
