If I'm right (which is probably a long-shot), I THINK that burley tastes nutty...if that helps.
If I'm wrong then burley doesn't taste nutty and you can rule that one out if you taste nuts.

A good Burley straight or in a blend will have that nutty taste. Depending on the quality of the tobacco, aging, not overly moist and NOT overtopped with casings or added flavorings.

In performing some research on Amphora Original Blend, I came across this old information sheet in regards to Amphora pipes (hope you can read it): In addition, there was some interesting history on the Douwe Egberts located here: www.heritagecenter.info/en/history

Lady M, women smoked pipes as long as man has. It’s just as much accepted today as it was over 150 years ago.....that’s just ridiculous. Nothing wrong with a woman enjoying a pipe as well as a good cigar. I had a female friend that chewed tobacco for many years. When she had to spit.....she did it very lady like.....in a paper coffee cup she always carried. I always use too watch her if she made me a cup of coffee in a paper cup...lol

This is why I took up the pipe -- the original Lady Margaret, my great-great-great-grandmother (whom I was named after)

Having spent some time with this blend now, I'm ready to give my initial impressions. First, I'll say this blend was much better than my expectations and I'm glad the BOtM prompted me to try it. The natural Burley leads this orchestra in first chair followed by the sweetened Virginia Cavendish. Casings and toppings are minimal with a light cocoa and molasses flavor. What pleasantly surprised me was the solid performance by the Turkish leaf in there. It offers a nice sour citrus note counterbalancing the earthiness throughout the entire smoke. The DFK plays a minor role but does seem to offer some depth and slight spice. Overall, quite pleased with this one and give it 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Just rec'd my pouch of Amphora. I last smoked this about 40 years ago and found it bland, but I was a Balkan Sobranie only guy then. Now, I find my first impression favorable. To me, the dark fired is the prime flavor (fortunately), with a little oriental astringency and Virginia hay, maybe a touch of molasses. Definitely needs to be dried a bit IMO. I'll be interested to see what it's like in some other pipes. I perceive it to be a light, more astringent version of HH ODF. More to come in days ahead.

Well JR brought me a pouch of Amphora with the rest of my Father’s Day treasures. I have been enjoying at least one bowl of this every day since Saturday. I am new to the wide world of Briar and Bacco. I hope my review skills improve over time. I’ll learn terminology as we go. I opened that lovely brown pouch with the gusto of a young man on his first date. I breathed deep and instantly thought, “Damn, Raisins! I hate raisins.” I will say I was less than enthused with my first bowl. Later a sat down to properly indulge. I decided I would keep the Amphora to a single pipe, and now every bowl just gets better and better. I have experimented with different drinks because everything we consume changes your palate for short bursts. My Willet Potstill Bourbon brings out the earthy and nutty nuances. Beer was less than successful just trust me. My favorite has been sweet tea. Sweet Tea, and I mean Southern style, brings the chocolate out wrapped around a nutty center. This is becoming habitual. Late morning sun, beside the pool, a glass of ice cold sweet tea. There’s a marriage that lends to a nearly perfect nostalgic smoke. It rolls around warm and full, but gentle on the senses. It smells of my papaw’s shirt and my granny’s kitchen. The subtleties of this blend bring memories of a long lost afternoon. I rather enjoyed it.

For me the way something makes me feel or the memory it recounts are much more important than what a label says.

I'm sure they simply ran out of the other brochure "A Woman and Her Pipe" prior to printing They had to destroy the first batch printed. They accidently called it "A Woman and His Pipe".

So my pouch came this morning. I haven't had a chance to smoke it yet, but I stuck my nose firmly into the pouch and I could certainly detect chocolate.
I'm not sure if I would have detected it without the hints on this thread, but I probably would. It's quite obvious. However, knowing it's there helps psychologically.

OK, so I managed about 2/3 - 3/4 of a bowl of Amphora. That's gotta be more than enough for a review, no? Probably not. However, while I will participate in BOM in some way, shape or form, I can in NO WAY contribute at the same level as the others. Heck, even BeardedPipeSr wrote a sterling review and he's new to pipe smoking. So here are my thoughts... As I mentioned earlier, stuffing my nose into the pouch I could smell the chocolate that everyone else had mentioned. It was there without a doubt. The rest smelled like tobacco. It looked more like a ready-rubbed tobacco to me rather than a ribbon cut, but it packed well and burned great. I had no relights the whole way down the bowl (until it rained and halted proceedings). As for taste...With every sip I concentrated hard hard HARD! I tried to really think about what tastes where floating around. With each snork I tried to invoke a memory of a certain food item. After a lot of concentration I managed to come up with this. I could taste smoke but that's about it - no surprise there for me. However, I thought this smoke tasted more pleasant than other tobaccos I've tried recently. It's a milder taste to me. It' not as sharp - smoother, perhaps. Like the difference between taking a glass of sparkling mineral water and taking a glass of milk. I enjoyed it. Based on a smoke profile rating (which I just made up) I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. I could smoke this one all day. Dammit, I suck at reviews. I'll still play along, but cos I can't participate next month or 2 months after that you'll be spared half of the pain.

Your review was good and yes I could smoke this blend all day as well. If yours is overly moist give it 45 minutes to an hour of air drying in a tray. For me that makes a BIG difference 👍. It’s called a ribbon cut but I’d call it a rough ribbon cut. Enjoy, you’ll be getting much more. Better with at least one year of aging. Besides the many pouches I’ve aquired I also have 6 pint size Mason jars dated 2013 & 2014.

Legendlover, In fact not only was your review OK, I pretty much agree with it; although I won't go out of my way to buy more. My taste buds are too acclimated to HH ODF and Lat blends. Unless it has creosote and pine chips in it, I can't taste it
