I am wondering if we can get a thread for J Cotton’s #1? I just made one! Thank you very much!

bouwser - any thoughts on October's BOM? Or do we let this BOM experiment slip into the annals of history?

BoM started out strong and then everyone fell off the wagon. I think I have a few tins of previous noms of the last year that still havent been opened.
It's a great idea, but participation goes up and down.

Aromatics are the problem. By alternating, your asking non aro smokers to smoke an Aromatic every other month.

Its asking non aro smokers to smoke an aro. Its asking aro smokers to smoke a non aro. Its asking VaPer smokers to smoke an english. Its asking to try something one otherwise might overlook.
Participation has been low for quite some time no matter what type of tobacco is chosen. Its a good idea as a community event but maybe its not a fit here. In all honesty you need participants who are into trying new things because they either like new experiences or are new to pipe smoking.

I was hoping my blind tasting thread was gonna take off. That fizzled, too. I haven't even seen many reviews lately, either. I'm guilty of not contributing to these things enough. Maybe I'll start reviewing more.

I will add my input. Being new to this gig, I enjoy the BOM selections. It has widened by palate and helped me see what I like and don't. I've even found some surprises in there (Blackberry Brandy!) I also find it fun to try to find the blends as some have been a bit harder to find, including my own.
I understand the ebb and flow of participation but it has added some cool conversation about blends that we've maybe not had before .

Who's got December? If no one has it already, I'd like to nominate Watch City Nor'Easter or Peretti Royal. Legend Lover, if we're allowed to send you 50g, we will.

I have spent sometime watching the responses. I have not parcipitated at all. I have found the majority of the blends chosen are aros or hard to obtain. I also have an income that is small and my tobacco money is spent on what I can afford and smoke.
In the beginning of this experiment their was an idea with a set of loose guide lines. For some reason or another the creator wandered on. Which left everything up in the air and no-one at the helm. Also at the same time the thread gets lost until someone stumbles across it. The same things are happening to the Pay It Forward and What's In The Mail Threads.
I suggest that a group gathers and discuss the future of the BOM thread. As for me I have pretty much lost interest.

It's not cheap to send stuff over to me. I'm happy to sit out of the months where there is a tobacco I can't get hold of. I have spent sometime watching the responses. I have not parcipitated at all. There might still be a future in this, but you're right. a few of us need to perhaps take this to private chat and discuss what we can do to revamp and repackage this. It would be nice to get ideas on what people would like to see that would make them want to participate.

Its asking non aro smokers to smoke an aro. Its asking aro smokers to smoke a non aro. Its asking VaPer smokers to smoke an English. Its asking to try something one otherwise might overlook. I thought the BOM was an interesting idea at the beginning, but when I looked at the blends selected, I was fairly certain that I wouldn't like the majority of them. My priority has been sampling blends that I at least suspect I would like and then stocking up the ones I actually do for my cellar . So even though I was interested in sampling new blends, I new that many, if not most BOMs, wouldn't be smoked after an initial pipe or two, and that didn't seem like a good expenditure of limited funds.

A suggestion from a really new guy. I've read the last few posts and the consensus seems to be that it doesnt cater to everyone. I dont think it can, BUT...
A General idea might be to post TWO blends, one aero and one Non aero. Additionally, as much as possible make them selections that are as readily available as is practical while still putting out a good variety.
If I had just a little more funds I would be willing to buy a tin of the BOM, and repackage it in 1/4 oz or so bags I can vacuun seal them. Then mail them to anyone who wants to try it. Sadly, I cant afford that. Maybe a buying pool? Everyone contributes a buck or two, and those who contribute get a sample mailed?

Yes. As I recall it wet strong last Spring (1999), got a little tangled up in the Summer with a couple of blends some folks didn't have access to, and died by the Fall. Too bad, Fall and Winter are good seasons to be trying new tobaccos. I think the biggest problem is just selecting tobaccos that are available to all or most members. Might make sense to create a list regionally.

Maybe bring it back but not as BOM but Blend of the 1/4 or blend of the season (Spring/summer/Fall/Winter)? Possibly suggesting 2 blends one Aro one Non aro...just a thought

Ok I will use this post as a test if we can get enough likes then I will set up a BOQ (blend of the quarter)
If it is a go I will start a new thread with the details
Pass the word and point people here if you think they will be interested and may miss the post

There should be some discussion on the blends in question. If monthly, we should select at least a quarter in advance to allow folks to buy several at a time and hopefully avoid shipping charges. If quarterly, then best to set out a year's worth of blends in advance. One of the problems I had on the earlier attempt was blends were chosen and later found out they were unavailable in some places. Or some people had no interest in aro's and so stopped a month and then it lost momentum. I don't really have any answers, but perhaps 3 blends per month or quarter, 1 aro, 1 lat, 1 Virginia based. That at least should keep most peoples interest. And pick blends that are basically available everywhere (hard to do, I know).

That at least should keep most peoples interest. And pick blends that are basically available everywhere (hard to do, I know). Kinda what I am thinking. I really think working on the quarter for now seems the most realistic as far as keeping it accessible for the largest population. If we pick 2 blends 1 aro / 1 non based on quarters January, February, and March (Q1) April, May, and June (Q2) July, August, and September (Q3) October, November, and December (Q4) Then it gives everyone time to buy/smoke/review/age a bit/smoke and review again...or any subset of those actions. For Q1 the 2 blends for Q1 AND Q2 should be picked, then in Q2 we pick Q3, Q3 pick Q4, then Q4 picks next year's Q1, that gives 6 months +/- to obtain the tobacco. In the US we have places like P&C to orders a large number of blends, we need the equivalent in the UK, AUS, and other countries so we can make better choices. Or, that is how I see it....I am just throwing stuff up and seeing what gets caught right now
