I have always been leery of cobs, including MM, because one caused me a wicked sore throat one time. I have talked to other pipers who have experienced this also. I don't know if it is some kind of strange allergy (I can eat corn..) or what it is, but I avoid them since that happened. When the sore throat cleared up, I continued using the pipe, and it happened again, so I know it was the pipe. Did you try the Cob you plug in that trailboss posted. That will definitely alleviate any sore throat in the future. Don’t recommend smoking this particular Cob while in the tub....lol Seriously, try the new MM Country Gentleman or Diplomat Cobs. The bowls are cured to be much harder. Might have been a reaction you had to the old glue they used a while back. I know a pipe smoker that had the same issue, but with the two I mentioned he really enjoys his Cobs now. Good luck👌👍

Not to mention, if you had a cob that you don’t know where it came from.... some Chinese cobs that P&C used to give away used a caulk type plug in the base of the bowl as opposed to the hardwood plug that a reputable cob maker would use. One can only imagine what kind of nastiness awaits you when you start smoking caulk at the bottom of the bowl.] ]

Makes total sense not to purchase a Cob made in China, most likely is made from a combination of asbestos and fiberglass....that’s a BIG WARNING!!!

From the posts above it sounds like it may have to do with an old manufacturing process. I've seen a lot of Chinese pipes for sale in Thailand but I've never touched any of them. They were all some sort of wood, though. Not sure they were briar.

I've noticed glue over-run in the bowls of new cobs from MM. I've also noticed, after a smoke, the shank is fairly easily rotated at the connection point, which indicates that the glue begins to soften to some extent.
Does that mean we're smoking a bit of glue? I don't know.
No indictment of cobs here, just an observation reported.

That’s why in the past 2 years I only smoke the Country Gentleman or Diplomat pipe or with similar hard cured bowls. The newer MM with the hardwood stems have had no issues with me, tight as a drum 👍 I own a Country Gentleman that has over 350 smokes so far and I’d say it’s good for at least twice that. On all my new Cobs I coat the chamber with a good pipe mud made from high quality cigar ash. Mix with very little water and make a thick paste. I use different size hobby brushes. Hardens like cement and a good cake forms much easier without damaging the chamber. Give it a try but save your good cigar ash. Works better then the Cob powder for me👍

But maybe I don't get far enough down without dumping.

I can't possibly overstate how much I love the cob, my favorite being the MM country gentleman. I have many styles including a cobbit, they will always have their place among my briars.

The cg is quite possibly my favourite mm cob.

I cant say enough about my MM cobs. I love them! I bought 2 spares just in case something ever happens to one of mine. So far they're still brand new. I have some "nice" briars, but my cobs take the brunt of the load. Often times getting smoked 5+ times a day.

Well stop wondering............. It burns like someone shoved a hot fireplace poker up your nose, but totally worth it. that was funny!

My B&M had another bulk blend called "Whitetail" it was an English blend, and he discontinued it. I asked him about it and he said the place he got it from quit carrying it, but he would never tell me where he got it from or what it was actually called. Maybe I should try asking the other guy who works there.... Wear a low cut blouse and show some leg on your next visit.....you’ll get the truth out....😜🤪Really..? It didn't work for me.

I really like cobs, like most of you here. There is nothing like a cob to handle an aromatic in stride without smoking wet. My favorite is a bent Country Gentleman but lately I've had my eyes on the Spindle and Spool styles that MM makes; not sure what the model is - Diplomat maybe? Wish they still made "corn-dogs" - cob pipes shaped like a bulldog. And I really like cobs with a bamboo shank! Spindle and Spool are from the Danish series, aka: Danish Spool. When introduced, the Great Dane was an Egg shape. Unfortunately no longer offered. I have 1 and it is a VG smoker.

Nothing like a cob to bring out the natural sweetness of a bacco, and does so by being the most neutral open-pore medium of smokers. 9 of 10 of my smokes are cobbed.

I have two Missouri Meerschaum Legends, a bent and a straight, bought at our local supermarket; they are OK smokers, but I'm not all that enamoured by corn cobs as most of you are.
I'm not the world's largest outdoor smoker, but when DW tricks me into something, she calls "going for a walk", I always fill a cob and bung it in a coat - or shirt pocket. You never know when you want to sit down and have a smoke. I seem to get clumsy when I venture out and away from my usual habitat (the smoking den) and so it's nice to bring a pipe that can easily and cheaply be replaced.

This sums it up for me too, and the fact that tobacco doesn't get goopy in a cob like it does in a briar. It's like a sponge. At least, that's been my experience.

The bowl is much harder then a Legend because it’s cured differently. If you buy one you’ll then be known as LCG....Lover Country Gentleman.....lol Did you ever use your birth name in a thread? Or in Ireland are you just known as “ Legend “ ?

I took my CG last night because I wanted a longer smoke than I get from the Legend and I rediscovered what I already knew. The Country Gent is just too heavy for me to clench comfortably when I am walking.

love MM cobs. You really cannot go wrong with them, and you can easily mod them if they aren't exactly the way you want. I have swapped out several bits for shorter or longer ones, and they are some of the best pipes I own. Had a Diplomat that went with me on a couple of all-expense-paid vacations, but fell victim to a burnout a year after the last one. Truly recommend them to every pipe smoker young and old.
