Well in my very short career with the pipe I have started with a cob from Missouri meerschaum it's called the elf it looks like a churchwarden to me, my next one was a shire which was another churchwarden and the one after that is a dwarf another churchwarden. I have recently ordered a Country Gentleman again from Missouri meerschaum, and an estate pipe that's called an anstead special? it's a 5 and a half inches long and is poker pipe made out of Briar. As far as tobacco I like ship's wheel very much but who doesn't, I also smoke something affectionately known in my tobacco shop as Tex mix but I'll have to check with the proprietor before I can share that mixture and a friend of mine got me something called shortcut to the mushroom it's pretty good but not what you would think. So far I'm digging it and I have discovered what tongue bite is, not a fan of that so much.
Now, I am fairly well versed with cigars but I don't know if that's appropriate here.

Never heard of it and can't find it online ... must be a local mix from your B&M?

Keep in mind I'm a Ginzel to this pipe culture. A Ginzel you ask? The only way I know to explain it is as such. at the top of the ladder you have the owner, below him is the superintendent, next comes the Forman, then the helper, then the gofer, then the flunky, then the lowly GINZEL. Yep, thats me the Ginzel.

Welcome, the Shortcut to Mushrooms is pretty tasty. Keep buying more pipes.

You'll do well with those cobs, and the country gentleman is a superb pipe... One of my favorites (as is the legend, but there's no surprise there - see my username).
I've heard shortcut to mushrooms is a good tobacco.
Keep trying new blends and enjoy the ride. The cobs will probably be more forgiving than your briar.
And of course, everything you need to know about pipe smoking can be found here... Just ask.
Ps. We have a section on this forum dedicated to cigars.

Cobs are among the best smoking pipes available. They will help fill out your rotation while you acquire briar, meerschaum or other pipes.

I enjoy my many Cobs, I lost count at 20. They are best for those blends you smoke that you know will definitely ghost a briar. Also makes some Burley blends โ sing โ๐๐๐๐

I was a cob snob for years due my smoking of the el cheapo cobs from the gas station that fell apart..burned through the base.. Then one day i tried a MM cob and realized what a fool i have been for years. I have close to 20 cobs now and smoke them more than my meers and briars!

You canโt beat the outstanding smoking pleasure from a MM Country Gentleman or Diplomat bowl. The method that is being used to cure/dry the Cob makes them last for 100โs of enjoyable smokes. Also that hardwood piece thatโs used on the bottom of the bowl makes a world of difference ๐๐๐

I really like MM Country Gentleman. I have a handful. I also like the Legend, and have several of them. They all provide a freaking excellent smoke AFAIAC. I use them in the car and fishing, so I won't cry if I lose or destroy my pipe.
At home in my OSC (over stuffed chair) I usually smoke a briar, often a churchwarden, or more likely a Sav 320EX. If I have non-smoke-averse friends over, I like the churchwarden, because its so darn cool. )I even do the temple tapping with the bit like Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes.)
I would absolutely defend cob smoking as a way to go, a legit preference, and certainly not just a Ginzel smoker.

Welcome from South Georgia!
I like my briars, but most of the time I grab a cob instead.

love cobs! i started out with a MM Legend, then I discovered the apple Diplomat and bought several of those. Now the Mark Twain is my favorite shape, but I have Country Gents, Diplomat Kolonels and just acquired some Rob Roys. That one is great for short smokes.

Welcome from Floriduh. Love my cobs also. Have plenty of briars...16 by one maker alone, and as much as I love those briars I keep grabbing a cob. I've got 4 Legends for the 4 types of tobacco I enjoy...and a couple of Country Gentlemen. My meers are looking at me with a jaundiced eye as well as my calabash. I guess they are wondering why I haven't fired them up in quite a while.

Well I am interested in trying it. For years I save and use my good cigar ash. Add enough water to make a thick paste. I coat the bottom and side walls of the Cobs chamber with one of my craft brushes. Once hardens itโs like cement. Also a cake tends to stick and form better using cigar ash. Give it a try and in the background youโll hear..โ hey Mikey, he likes it โ! ๐๐๐

I strongly suspect my B&M's "Almost Heaven" blend is just relabelled 1Q, but he won't fess up to it, lol.

Yup, I agree! The only very local B&M sells mostly cigars and only a few of what he calls....โ my custom blends โ. One I know for sure is 1Q 75% & Lane Very Cherry 25%, the guy that opens for him on Sundayโs told me thatโs his โ special house mystery mixture โ! I smoked a bowl and knew what the blend was made up of immediately!!! Because for some reason 1Q makes my mouth dry when I smoke it, which I no longer do!!!

My favorite Cob is one that I made. Itโs a reverse Calabash Oom Paul style that smokes extremely cool. Iโve posted a picture prior under the thread โ What are you smoking โ, I will post it one more time within this Cobs thread.

My B&M had another bulk blend called "Whitetail" it was an English blend, and he discontinued it. I asked him about it and he said the place he got it from quit carrying it, but he would never tell me where he got it from or what it was actually called. Maybe I should try asking the other guy who works there....
