I have one pipe with a tall kind of narrow cylindrical bowl. I smoked my beloved Blonde and some other tobaccos, War Horse, Dunhill Elizabethan, C&D Happy Days, etc.
What I have noticed, I think, is that the tall thin cylinder seems to amplify the taste. Not a lot but noticeable. Its just as if the volume were turned up a couple of clicks. My hypothesis is that you are pulling the smoke through more tobacco. But I haven't done any experiments because I have only one of these "chimney" type pipes.
I am going to see about getting some chimneys to play with, but I wonder about y'all's experience. Am I crazy? Do I need a life?

I was gifted a slowroll pipe. These beauties are to die for. You are right about kicking the flavor up a notch. I am surprised how easily they clench, too. I would have thought, and did think, they would be awfully balanced. It's the opposite. It's one I put in my must have category: Straight, Canted/Slight Bend, Meer, Cob, and Chimney or Stack, as I call them. I've gotten away from full bends, unless they are Meers (you can't go wrong on them).

I had a beautiful chimney years ago. I had trouble keeping it lit so I got rid of it..I'm still regretting that..I probably just didn't understand how to smoke it..It was called a Danekraft. It's the only pipe I've ever seen by that name.

I have a few Chimney briars and 6 Chimney bowls for my Falcon, Viking and Kirsten pipes. I enjoy them all, if your in the mood for a half bowl or 3/4β bowl full your set to go! I never overfill any of my pipes. Iβve posted a number of Chimney pipes and bowls on here prior. Slowroll makes some gorgeous fancy tall Chimney pipes, first rate ππππ

I have 4 chimney pipes, 1 meer, 1 Italian briar, 1 Austrian briar, and 1 Slowroll Pibe Dan Reformed tribute stack. The Slowroll is tied with the Austrian for the best smoker, but it is the one I choose the most.

That concentration of flavor that you describe is why I prefer them for straight Virginias.
For complex multi-constituent blends, however, I prefer a wide bowl as it seems to let everything meld together better.

I tend to get more tongue bite with tall, narrow bowls. It may be a problem with technique, but its there. Probably the strangest pipe in my collection is Mr Brogs Giant XL, I think its called. Totally like that.

slowroll will add his thoughts, but what I've gleaned from him is what you're saying. I must get my hands on one of these.

Since it was suggested I break it in with half then three quarters I got a good idea of how long of a smoke it would be. The tobacco it usually gets is Five Brothers, which burns fairly fast, so even full I don't get an hour smoke, nor do I usually want one that long. I almost never pack a pipe full, unless it's the last bit in a pouch. At some point I think I'll need to give it a week's rest or more, as I do with everything but cobs.

He posted a lot of them in WAYS, and the question in my mind was how he enjoy that one "odd" type so much. That was months ago and I am glad I kept my mouth shut and learned something (I know, hard to believe). It still looks like it's one of those anti-gravity tricks when you clench it.

See how much one learns when one stays quiet? Well, gotta add my 2 cents as has been suggested I would: I do find that the chimneys/stacks amplify the Flavor a noticeable amount. Slow puffing and a light pack makes it superb. I don't smoke my others as much anymore. In fact, I find that my favorites are the ones with a slightly narrower bowl, 11/16 inch, and pretty deep. Also j find that if you want a shorter smoke, filling them part way smokes better (cooler) than a standard pipe partly filled. In general, I like a lot of tobacco simmering away. For some reason, I don't get a good smoke from a wide pot , can't keep them burning properly, so stacks are my answer.

No, they are light and well balanced.

I normally wouldn't take the opportunity to mention an item for sale within a thread like this...but I've got a 50-60 year old bent rustic chimney estate pipe which I've restored, and plan to sell on eBay. It's in remarkable condition for it's age, and I'm happy to post it in the marketplace section here on the patch if someone here wants to see it first.

Well, I've seldom had the desire for a chimney pipe, although I do have a nice morta that could be considered a chimney. But I just got this one on eBay that's an interesting pipe, and is stamped Special Collection, London England. A rather large canted billiard chimney or stacked if you will. Nice grain, and rather large too. It is said that it is made by Charatan, but who knows? I did smoke some MB Vanilla Cream Flake in it and it was wonderful! Two hours of smoke that I had to break up into 3 different periods. I never expected a chimney to smoke this well. I'm hooked!
