A while back I was talking to a fella who owns a smoke shop.He told me that his store was once located in a mall.He asked me if I was ever in that mall.I told him twice during my travels.I don't just go to that mall because it's about 90 miles from my house..He told me that he moved his shop out of the mall into a separate building because pipe smokers wouldn't fight the mall crowd to come to his shop. His shop looked like it was full but 90% of the people in it were just lookers.I guess that's another reason it seems like mall smoking shops are going by the way side..I used to go to the mall walk around do some shopping, sit on a bench smoke a bowl while I watched the girls walk by,have lunch, visit the smoke shop, and call it a good day..I miss those days, but I'm afraid they are long gone.

I haven't been in a shopping mall in years. Just walking from the parking lot into the mall is a risky proposition. The Tinder Box here moved from a mall to a free-standing shop with a lounge/bar in the back. Unfortunately, they specialize in cigars and carry very little pipe tobacco. And what they do have comes dear--any tin with "Dunhill" on the label goes for $21.95.

A mall is for walking around in the Winter time for exercise and a cup of coffee. Also great for people watching!!! The ONLY time I spent money at a mall is if there was a spectacular sale. Why should I pay their rent.

Many, if not most, malls dictate hours of operation to their merchants and also get a % of the revenue from the shops. The rents are generally higher too. So, no surprise B&M's look for other options. That's what happened to our B&M and they're way better off for leaving the mall.

The last time I was in a mall smoke shop was in 1986 at the ChulaVista Mall in El Paso, TX. I believe I was looking for some of the Battalion Army Zippos! My gosh that is a long time ago!

There used to be a shop in the mall with sealed doors, it closed about 10 years ago.

Most of the mall shops left thesedays are the vape/even headshop-type variety with a tiny corner of pipes and Captain black, and that's if you are lucky. A very good, brick and mortar tobacconist based out of a town about an hour from here had a very solid cigar and pipe shop in our local mall. It was very classy, and looked and felt like a real tobacco store. It was always busy, but unfortunately, despite the business the rent was just offsetting his profits and he had to move everything back into town. That was the only really decent tobacco shop I've seen in a mall yet. It was really sad to see it go, too.

I learned much from watching that show, many hours of good laughs just sitting on a bench or in a food court at a mall. People do the strangest things👍👍

I kind of liked the mall in it's hey day.I'd read for free at the book stores, gawk at the knifes at the cutlery store. Put few quarters in the last remaining pinball machine at the arcade.Look at the tiny section of weird things called compact dics in the music store. Grab a cigar on the way out, LaUnica I think it was. Of course all the girls in between. Does anyone remember slit dresses? Now they are all gone I'd just be the creepy old man. Speaking of rent, the only thing that remains is the damn guy playing the organ.I mean how many organs can one sell in a month? What is the margins on those things, is like coffee? No one can convince me otherwise the organ store is not some kind of outpost for the CIA or KGB or Aliens.

… use to go to the mall like many...enjoy the pipe, browse in the book store, cup of tea/coffee, wait on the wife as she shopped, and when the kids were younger would be "around" keeping track of them, as I didn't just drop them off and leave...Frankly, I don't miss the mall experience today as too many things have changed...however, I do have some fond memories...

One thing I like about the mall living in Arizona, is going for an air conditioned walk from store to store....The trend here though is more like how outlet centers are set up. If you want to go from the Under Armor store to the Hilfiger store, it is a hot walk. On the nearby reservation though, smoking is permitted on their outlet style outdoor mall and they have solar screens overhead, fans and misters when the humidity is low, therefore I smoke.
I remember when Tinderbox was in the mall, you could walk out in the mall and puff away on your pipe walking through the stores.... 40 years ago.

As of last Christmas (last time I was there) there was a Tinder Box in Raleigh’s Crabtree Mall. It had moved from a prime location at one the busy corners inside the mall to a small hallway within the mall. You really had to search for it. When I was there they had a few Peterson, Savinelli, and maybe a Dunhill or two. Not much variety or pipe tobacco on the shelves. They did have a large walk-in humidor for cigars. I expect it will be gone within the near future. I can remember when they had a huge selection of pipes and pipe tobacco. Prices weren’t too high either.

I always loved to go into the mall tobacco shops when I was a kid. I loved the smell, the pipes, and the camaraderie of the guys hanging out there. They always treated me like one of them even though I was a kid. I started working when I was thirteen, so had money and liked to buy my father nice pipes and accessories for his birthday, father's day, and Christmas. Good memories. Today the clerks would be arrested for selling to a minor.

I go to the same mall I went to as a kid and teen. It feels good to be there and it's still there. Many of the shops have been there 25+ years. I grew up there and hung out with my friends there hung out ans Met girls there. I always had good memories there.
Unfortunately there are homosexuals having sex in the public restrooms there. They are drilling holes in the bathroom stalls. They had some police stings make the news. Then the police chief was accused of bigotry.
Other than that it's a one if a kind mall. I am so happy it's still there and MOST of the shops are still in busjness.
I believe they posted a profit while other malls were going out of business.

I haven't seen a tobacco shop in a mall for many years. I understand that there is a Tinder Box in a mall in Rockford, Il. It's about 30 miles from my house. I am going to have to visit it soon. I want to try Philosopher blend. Lee Van Cleef smoked it and he was one of my favorite Western actors.

There was one in Lakeside Shopping Center (a mall) in Metairie, Louisiana for years, but it closed it quits about two years ago.

When I was a kid just about every mall in the area had a Tinder Box.
They were pretty noticable due to the aroma.

When I was a kid just about every mall in the area had a Tinder Box. They were pretty noticable due to the aroma. The last Mall Tinderbox I frequented was owned by an elderly German-Swiss couple. I loved the place. They were the perfect hosts. We would kibbutz in my broken German. They were always glad to see me. They were very sad to close the place but it was time for them to retire.

I haven't been to a mall in many years. I think someone told me one of the malls here still has a Tinder Box. I couldn't believe it. May have to go out of morbid curiosity. Here in NC it illegal to smoke inside without a permit and said permit will not be granted unless it is a standalone establishment. That eliminates strip malls and the like. Some older tobacconist are still allowed and were grandfathered in when the law went into effect.

Back in the late 1970's, in the Riverside Mall in Utica, NY, there was a Pipe Pub. The manager only hired pipe smokers because he wanted his store to be successful. Most employees were part-time, but when I had questions, whoever was on duty was very helpful in answering or finding an answer. Sadly, that store and that mall are gone.

Pipe Pub was another chain that competed with the Tinder Box. We didn't have those in my neck of the woods, so I've never been in one.
I found a TV ad on youtube for a Pipe Pub in Baton Rouge. It's a fun blast from the past. Way more upscale than the Tinder Box stores I remember back in Indiana!

I thought Tinder Box was long gone. I was surprised to come out of a Bass Pro shops in Tacoma, WA a couple years ago and see a big Tinder Box banner on a feeestanding shop across the parking lot. Went in and got some Philosopher's blend, and a tin of original Frog Morton, both for old time's sake. I hadn't smoked much for several years at that point, and I think that started me off on my latest phase of the pipe.
I was gratified to find I still enjoyed them both. I don't know if Philosopher's is a re-labeled bulk, or if it's actually theirs but it's decent. I was amazed how many varieties of Frog there were lol. If only I'd grabbed a few of each...

Until recently, Briar Patch, the Sacramento B&M, had two stores, one of which was in a mall. They had a smoking lounge in the mall location. They were actually forced out by the mall owners because of the lounge. I believe the Briar Patch told us the mall owners said they didn't want health threatening smoke jeopardizing the mall customers. It was next to a market, so maybe that had something to do with it. Anyway, sad, it was a nice shop. Now they are limited to one location ,and it's not in a mall. And it's much further away for me.

I don't remember any smoke shops in the malls in my area growing up. With all the remembering of the Tinderbox I thought I should share this. It's a Tinderbox ST. Ives #7440.

A ton of the Tinder Box pipes were high grades from the UK.
Your “St Ives” is probably a Cadogan pipe.

Haven't been to a mall since the Army. Like Dave, it was Chula Vista in El Paso. I remember buying a high quality Italian Stiletto knife. I carried it for years until a Sgt Major took it from me at the range. haha
As kids, my friends and I used to go to the local mall and just loiter. Maybe buy some comics or hit the arcade. This was 98-2000 and you could still smoke inside. Oh Wetern Pennsylvania... Caught in a temporal bubble ten years behind the coasts. The mullet was worn here unironically up until the early 2000s- Yet Pittsburgh regularly scores top ten on the list of most literate cities.
