I’m slowly trying to smoke aromatics again. I smoked Captain Black almost exclusively for my first seven years. I’m not having any success finding one for an occasional smoke, except one.
Since late 2017, I’ve tried:
Peretti Coffee Klompen Kloggen and some other Sterling’s Mac Baren Navy Mixture Barclay Rex Barclay Rum (it’s called something else now)
I know I don’t enjoy goopy/PG blends anymore. I traded away a box of Exotic Orange without trying it. The smell was to powerful.
The only one I would smoke again would be Klompen Kloggen. It’s comprised of many different tobaccos, including Yenidje. I think the inclusion of Yenidje is what makes it nice for me. I thought I would enjoy the Mac Baren, but I don’t like the rum.
I’m not looking for a daily aromatic. It would be nice to have one or two I could occasionally smoke.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Also, I don’t like vanilla.

I too grew up on the Original Captain Black, smoked the blend for many years. Use to head out East on Long Island and stop at the Indian Reservations and pick up a few of the large canister cans for under $15.00, those days are long gone!
Sam, your smoking some fine aromatics, have you tried Dan Tobacco Blue Note, also known as Torben Dansk Blue Note? It’s an outstanding aromatic that does not need to be sipped too also appreciate the different flavors. The vanilla plays a role in the background.
Was it the Rattray’s Exotic Orange you traded? The aroma is a bit strong but it’s a wonderful smooth flavorful fruity/citrus smoke. One that many pipe smokers seek and purchase as soon as it’s back on the shelf.

Ted,
It was Rattray’s Exotic Orange. Thank you for the Dan Tobacco suggestions.

Try Killington (4-Noggins blend/maybe don't know if they are still blending this with new owner), Trout Stream (P&C), Candy Corn (P&C), Butternut Burley (P&C). All good aros.

Did you buy any sweet kilarney for BOM? That's maybe ott for you. I've not tried it yet, but I thought nutty cut wasn't too aromatic.

Try Two Friends Celtic Mist. I'm more of an English guy, but this one is good. PM me and I'll send you some.

Being a st. va and Balkan smoker I'm not big on most Aro's but one I've found that i enjoy occasionally is Peterson's Deluxe Mixture, a mixture of 3 different Vas and Black Cavendish. It smokes with a lovely room note and has a cinniman maple flavor at the back of the Vas.

There are a lot of nice aromatics but I prefer mixing my own for flavor with a little more oomph. 😎

Trout Stream! A great Aromatic and it does a good job to sweeten other Va. Or Burley blends when mixed. My second choice would be 4Noggins Killington.

I have a few of the boswell aro blends none are goopy and all are made with premium tobacco so they taste wonderful. Just get their aro sampler pack for a quick try.
I can now have something my wife likes to smell and I like the taste.
Z
Good luck on your search!

I enjoy a 50/50 mixture of 1Q and BCA. That’s the only way I can enjoy 1Q. 1Q alone dries out my mouth severely for some odd reason.

How 'bout some Cult Profile? I'd also recommend C&D Belmont Station, Granby Station, and Sutliff Aromatic English. All these are from my relatively inexperienced Piper's opinion. They all smoke well, and have never bitten me.
Edit: I just re-read your post, and missed the part about vanilla. You might not like the Profile of Sutliff, although I find the casing in Profile to be fairly light. I don't get any vanilla from the C&D blends though. One reviewer said they got some from Granby Station, but I don't.

Not being much of an aromatic smoker I am very picky about them. The one that I fell in love with about a year ago is Samuel Gawith Celtic Talisman. From Tobacco Reviews "Bright Virginias, burley and black cavendish with a dash of kirsch and vanilla gives Celtic its light and aromatic personality." My rule for aromatics is that I must still taste tobacco and this one really fits the bill for me.

I'm not the world's most avid smoker of Ben&Jerry-tobaccos, but I do enjoy the occasional bowl of Rattray's 'Exotic Passion'; in fact I'm having one at the moment of writing, in one of three pipes dedicated to that particular tobacco. It stays in the pipe... and stays... and stays... and so on.

The years I lived in Europe I had the pleasure of smoking the ORIGINAL Rattray’s directly from Scotland, the full 4 .oz container. Never smoked a Rattray’s tobacco back then I didn’t enjoy or stock up on for aging. When the time came for my move back to the States I shipped a 5’x3’ container back to the States filled with just Rattray’s blends. A few that come from Germany now have changed so drastically over the years, I no longer smoke them. But there are a number of Rattray’s made in Germany that are definitely worth stocking up on if your building a good back up, that’s if you can find them!!! Red Rapparee, Old Gowrie, Hal O' The Wynd and of course Marlin Flake👍👍👍. I recently had a bowl of fairly fresh Bagpipers Dream and could not finish the smoke, probably because I’m use to the original, which I still have a couple for future enjoyment👌👍

Sam, Sutliff Great Outdoors might work for you. Not sweet, not that Aromatic. Burns cool and clean.

I smoked Rattray's back when it was still made in Scotland and sad to say what is sold today is NOT what Rattray's blended back then. Red Rapparee was such a wonderfull blend back then compared with what the call RR today. I bought a tin last year and after 3 bowls I truthfully, threw the rest of the tin away !

Michael, I agree with the Rattray’s that are on the market now don’t compare to the original. Up until roughly 2 years ago most of the Rattray’s were extremely enjoyable. My last trip to NY my friend had recently purchased the Red Rapparee and Bagpipers Dream and I couldn’t finish either bowl. Both were part of my top 5 favorite Rattray’s tobacco’s. I have plenty of old stock so I’m not worried. For those that never had the chance to enjoy the original, the new releases might suit their palate. Pipe smokers still rave about Marlin Flake, they most likely never had the chance too also smoke the original.

Ted, As with most things made over any length of time, usually what's available currently is adequate for folks who never knew what was produced before. Some times it is adequate and well done but really won't be the same as made before. Many variables factor in, type of leaf, it's availability over time as well as the human beings who made it before. I would imagine that many of the people that made the Scottish Rattray's are no longer alive if at all! Sadly, change is the only constant in life and we all wan't consistancy in our lives ! Given all that, what I've sampled of the current Rattray's is not to my liking.

Michael ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ you can have 3 excellent years in a row that produce superb tobacco crops, it’s the few in between that can destroy any manufacturer. That’s basically why McClelland closed their doors, 2 very poor crop seasons in a row. No more of that outstanding McCranie’s labeled tobacco’s.....sad days ahead!
