I did a search, but didn't come up with anything, so I apologise if this has been brought up before. Just wondering the what's and why's of bent vs. straight pipes. I know people have their preference, but looking for first hand experience/opinions from you all.
Personally, I have about a 50/50 split, and I could go either way. Most tobaccos SEEM to smoke well in either, but I'm still new to this. Is there really a difference, besides bents being harder to get a cleaner through during a smoke?

Bents clench better for me but I have straights as well. You shouldn't have any problems getting a cleaner through a quarter bent pipe if it's properly drilled.

My pipe collection is made up of roughly 50/50 bents and straight pipes. I like change and especially smoking my Hungarian Oom Paul Pipes. I’m also enjoying many different nosewarmers as well👌👍

I don't think I have preference. Slightly bent is mostly what I gravitate to and I notice no difference in cleaning or smoking.

I do a lot of clenching, I guess old school, for that reason is also why I enjoy my Oom Paul’s, when sitting they make great chin resters👍

Most of mine are bent. I do have 2 straights and I've found that I like them more if I'm just sitting or walking around the yard. If I'm busy. A bent hangs better when my hands need to be freed. I haven't noticed much of a difference in them, other than the occasional gurgle when I puff to fast and forget my pipe cleaners inside.

So, what would, say, a Peterson 303 be considered? A half bent, or 3/4?

Because of the angle of the stem I would still consider it a full bent. The 303 is referred to as a bent Apple.

I would say it's a half bent and you won't be getting a cleaner through that one. Not unless you wait for it to cool and remove the stem, these are system pipes.

Info found online with the 303 model
“ The Peterson 303 is a full bent briar with a mid sized apple shaped bowl. The 303 is very popular mainly due to the comfortable shape and its manageable size. “

I would say it's a half bent and you won't be getting a cleaner through that one. 'Tis why I mentioned the pipe cleaner. I can't get a cleaner through most of my pipes that are as bent as the 303, but the "system" makes it impossible on that one.

The system pipes need to be cleaned with stem off, cleaners will not pass through stem into bowl, but most of the older Pete system pipes are good smokers. Personally, I don’t care for the quality control of Pete’s in the past 2 plus years. I’m hoping Laudisi enterprise resolves the quality control problems, which I do have faith in this company 👍👍

First, with new members and readers joining in at various times, don't worry about asking a question that "Has" been asked before. New people, new answers. Also, more expirience and some may change their answers. I have a mix of Bent and Straight pipes. The bent ones balance easier when clenching but tend to gurgle. The straight are easier to run a cleaner into and keep dry.Mostly it's aesthetics, does the pipe feel good in the hand,is the bit comfortable? The construction is more important to me in is it heavy or get hot with normal cadence.A thin wall chamber will be uncomfortable to hold.

Although obviously not designed for it, most Peterson System pipes will accept a 6mm Savinelli balsa filter without reducing draw in my experience. You might try it if gurgling is an issue. I don't have that issue with my two remaining 312 System pipes. I kept them when I thinned the herd because they were the best of several and function exactly as advertised on their own.

I find that bent (half or full) pipes gurgle for me because I'm a drooler. Straight pipes aren't so bad in that respect... However, I prefer the shape of a half bent pipe best of all.
My order of shape-preference is...
Half bent Straight Full bent

I am probably a 60/40 with most being straight pipes...I do like the way a bent hangs from the mouth. I think that with a System Standard pipe the way it is designed, if you get one that gurgles, it isn't much of a problem, pull the Army stem, dump the sump, swab with a bent cleaner, and carry on. pipedia.org/wiki/A_closer_look_at_the_famous_Peterson_Standard_System_Pipe

I understand sir, I'm just impatient and feel that when I smoke a pipe I should be smoking it and not having to deal with the pipe except relights. Besides that I think if ones drys their tobacco properly, sips slow and the pipe is drilled properly there will be no need for a sump to catch moisture but, that's just my opinion.

I'm not much of a clencher, so full bents don't exactly do much for me. The half bends are a perfect compromise, but I think the straight Popeye-pipe is my preferred. The only downside is that if I DO want to clench and hold a conversation, the damn thing turns into a hopping catapult, bouncing ash out of pipe and into my beer. This can be troubling.

Accidentally dumping ash aside,I'm having problems visualizing clenching a pipe, drinking a beer, and talking at the same time.Hell,I dump ash in my coffee just sitting at the computer.Adds flavor.

Can't stand at the buffer without it literally running down my chin and on my neck. So nowadays I just don't smoke when working but, surprisingly I can smoke while on the tractor without even a thought of drool. But, I also swallow a lot so as to keep any build up from taking place. Funny, I read years ago in a book put out by Weber pipes that the over abundance of saliva in ones mouth would dissipate in time when smoking a pipe. It's been over 25 years and it's still like some one left the spigot on. Reckon that just goes to show ya we aint all the same. Some of us just need a dentists suction pump when smoking.

I like both straight and bent. Love a full bent when I'm sitting and reading. If I get some gurgle, I just separate the stem and run in a thick cleaner. All my pipes have a snug, but not really tight fit, and I've been taking them apart while smoking or just after with no problem for 50 years.
