Depends on where you're from as to how you pronounce stuff. Dad worked in Galveston Texas for a Greek fleet owner. He would say yella instead of jelly, Dad told him damnit Greek its jelly not yella, Greek said it took me all my life to pronounce yella, now you say I have to say jelly. The funny thing about it he said it right that time. Yella is good enough for me.!

Now we know where ant was originally from Afrikaans and German or Dutch are pretty similar, an Afrikaaner can generally understand both, though he may not know the words beforehand to speak them.

Several years ago I met a Quickie Store owner from Nepal. I hadn't met anyone from Nepal before so made him tell me how to say 'thank you'. It sounds like daar nay bod. There's a different Quickie Store down the street run by a family of Nepalis.
When I see a new guy, it's fun to get your change and say daar nay bod. They say yeah. Then you say it again, they say oh. Then you say it again, pointedly and louder, and watch their faces light up. OHH!

I honestly have no idea how many languages I have studied. Obviously English. A little Spanish, 2 years of French. 1 year German. 2 years Greek (old, not modern) Then I started a Masters in linguistics. Every assignment used a different language.

If were talking studied languages then in school we had to take French and Latin. I also took Spanish. Then, more recently I studied Hebrew and Greek (similar to Winton - old, not modern). I also have some knowledge of Portuguese from my dad's background, but I never needed to speak it in Ireland so I don't know much of that either. Can I speak any of them? Not really. I could get by with my Spanish...kind of. But the rest have slipped out of my brain over the years. It takes me to be in the place to get good at the language. There's no substitute for being in the thick of it...for me anyway.

I split my time between South Africa and Namibia. Namibia,,,,,,That has a nice "Ring" to it.If I could just win the lottery I'd Love to travel your continent. My Mother always threatened to ship me off to Timbuktu,I was about 12 when I found it on a map and took her a box to put me in. Several years ago I met a Quickie Store owner from Nepal. I hadn't met anyone from Nepal before so made him tell me how to say 'thank you'. It sounds like daar nay bod. My favorite convenience store is run by a gentleman from Nepal and he sponsors other from there as students and immigrants. I like to go there and just hang out. They are fun to shoot the breeze with.

Basic grunt with some English thrown in for good measure, plus a smattering of mostly forgotten Spanish and Italian. My folks spoke English, Yiddish, Russian, Classical Greek, Latin, French, German and a few other languages. Grunt works for me.

I was actually asked by a little boy in the lunch line, in 1975 in Galveston, how it felt to be wearing clothes after wearing all that armour. Seriously. It won't offend me if you don't believe me, but that happened.

American English with west coast speed and a southern drawl. I also speak mechanic, redneck, backwards Cajun and broken Spanish without raising my voice thinking that they will understand me better.
