Amphora Balkan Sobranie Borkum Riff Captain Black Carter Hall Edward G Robinson E. Hoffman Five Brothers Granger Half & Half John Cottons Paladin Sail Prince Albert Sir Walter Raleigh St Bruno Velvet Villiger
These are the ones I can think of right off the top of my head. Out of this list, I think Amphora, Edward G Robinson, Five Brothers, Prince Albert, and Villiger are my favourites.
I am trying to put together a list (and eventually a collection) of all of the old codgers favourite pouches and tins that could be purchased in drug stores and the like. A lot of them sadly went out of business in the 70s-80s-90s, like Edgeworth, but there are a few out there still. Some are rereleases, and people are constantly comparing/contrasting them with the originals.
What am I missing? What real old codger counter blends do you still enjoy?

One that is NOT still on the market that I still enjoy (thanks to Scrooge) is the Canadian Old Chum. I wish someone else would pick up this blend, even as a match. Its just such a cool, smooth, easy smoking aromatic that actually has a very mild and enjoyable flavour. Maybe Sutliff or someone in the future?

Three nuns is in there, funny it should be. You know so has the three nuns green tin in stock now, which is supposedly closer to the original. I think (although I am not for certain) three nuns was more of a blend bought at a tobacco shop and not really something casually bought at a drug store. SP also has Cockstrong back in Stock which is a very decent burley blend based on the old burley blends of old. Hilarious name for an actually decent tobacco.

If you're looking for something actually closer to the original, try Savinelli Doblone d'Oro. It's also made by MacBaren. The green is something different from the original.

Funny you should say that. I actually have 100g of that in the jar on my tobacco shelf! I'll be enjoying that in my new savinelli tomorrow for breakfast!

A pity that American tobaccos are no longer available in the EU. I was tobacco-raised on, among others, Prince Albert, because my father smoked it and I've been fond of Burley ever since. A good pipe friend sent me a sample and lo and behold, the taste was exactly as I remembered it. I could order some from the US, but if it's stopped by the Danish Customs, the fun starts and it'll end up costing a fortune.

I know its a match blend but I'm pretty bullish on Match Holiday. If they ever re-release it in that painted tin I'd be very happy. Here you can still get OTC brand names like London Dock, Vermont Maple, Kentucky Club, Kentucky Club Aromatic, and a couple of others. I've even seen Middleton Apple.

Yes, #79 wasn't on the list nor Heine's Blend, which as JimInks verified, is the base for Mixture #79.

There are loads on that list that I didn't realise were otcs. Pipe tobaccos in general were far more common in stores long before we were even thought of. When 5 minute smoke breaks and cigarettes became the mainstay, we were stuck with maybe TWO blends, if we were lucky, in non-tobacco stores. It wasn't always this way. ** I should edit this - most of us. Some here maybe were smoking in the 50s or even earlier, but I would gather most were not.

In some ways, when I see Dr Grabow pipes still on the shelves in drug stores, I smile a bit, because at least something is left of what was a thriving and growing culture. Maybe just 2 or 3 lonesome budget pipes and some Captain Black and Sir Walter Raleigh, but hey, its something.

I wonder how many of these are still made by the original blenders?

Wow. Are those definitely not shisha tobaccos? There seems to be a nice pipe smoking community in Spain, with a major club and regional chapters. Which be nice in my old age, because that's where I'll be living!

@chico I didn't know you were thinking about moving there. You'll have to tell us all about Bombay Panmasala tobacco! Yes, my wife and I are planning a reconnaissance mission in the winter. We might need to move before Dec. 2020, which is the current Brexit cut-off date for freedom of movement (though that situation is so chaotic that everything seems subject to change). So we might go sooner than originally intended, but that's no bad thing either. I won't mind having a good couple of decades there before old age! I'll try the Bombay Panmasala right after the Bubble Gum. Here's a link to the Andalucia pipe club:https://www.andaluciapc.org/

These are the OTC tobaccos I plan to start with unless one of you learned pipes changes my mind for me As mentioned earlier, I would give London Dock a try, for an aromatic. I am also partial to Amphora Original. Villiger Original is good, but I have a heavy preference for their Jamaican blend. Five Brothers is an EXCELLENT early 20th century-styled Burley. For a nice, smooth English blend, you CANNOT go wrong with any of the John Cottons. Prince Albert is great Burley/Cavendish blend, with a hint of chocolate, and raisins? Don't ask me, its just damn good. Sir Walter Raleigh's aromatic is better than the Regular. Its a nice burley blend with hints of Dutch and and French liqueurs for a fine, smooth smoke, with a great room note. And don't forget St Bruno! I go for the ready rubbed, another Burley/Kentucky-based aro with very smooth fruity notes and a perfect room note. Most of these can be bought in pouches and they're reasonably priced $3-5 for 1.75 oz.

I've looked for Drum, Clan, and Condor in the States, but I haven't seen it anywhere. Maybe I am just looking in the wrong places, but I am not sure. Are they available online for US-based customers anywhere? Its really irritating, like trying to find good snuffs in even reasonably good tobacconists shops - aside from the dry Americans, they just don't have it, and usually recommend snus, when I really just want a good sniff of some Sam Gawiths or something. So I am stuck with Square snuff here - which is still a dry american but it has a little bit more moisture to it than most.

Drum is cigarette tobacco. I used to smoke it. Though maybe some use it in pipes, too?
