I once had a 70's era IH Travelall, think it was around 323 ci straight 6, 3 speed. I'd still have if not being center punched by a drunk. Top end was 90mph, didn't take it long to get there
it could cruise at 90mph till ya had to stop for gas. It was, as many of its brothers were, DOT Orange. Figure the color saved me more than a few tickets. The second most fun beater I ever had.

A pity they all rusted away

A bricklayer friend had a IH truck. He was t-boned by a Pontiac and it wasn't even dented. The Pontiac was totaled.

Once I asked my parents why they sold it and they said when the rust got so bad that they could see the road passing by underneath, they sold it due to safety concerns for us kids. I was bummed.

My friend had an UGLY yellow/ fake wood sides Torino wagon with a 429. I remember one day some kids in a mid 80's mustang tried and failed winning a race against us. They blew past us at a traffic light. Each light they would point and laugh then do a weak burnout and drive to the next light. Mark, my friend, waited till the second to last light and challenged them to a $100 race to the next light about about 1 1/2 miles down the road. These kids thought they had an easy hundred bucks. So they did a weak burnout and started down the road. Mark waited 5 seconds then punched it. We all, there were four of us in the wagon, found ourselves being forced deep into the seats and in seconds all the punks in the mustang saw was this ugly yellow blur fly past them. At the red light my friend Harry , all 6'4" and 350 lbs.,was standing outside the car waiting for the C-note. The driver came over looking rather embarrased with the money in hand when started poking him in the chest and said next time you wanna try racing us again you better ask " mother may I" before you touch that gas pedal. Those were fun times indeed!

Friend back in HS (1960) had a real beater...rust all over with a big mill corvette engine with one of the first FI setups...covered over the hole in the front seat where the Hurst shifter was snugly tucked in. Picked up a lot of gas money in that beater.

When I was a lad, every decent farm family drove one of those. Pure function, no style. Gas consumption was not an issue at 28 cents per gallon. You see, back then International Harvester was the tractor of choice and credit was already established so it was no problem to order up a Carryall or a Scout for the younger and smaller families.
