I really hate to pile on Peterson because I think they have really nice pipes. But check out the chips along the right-hand groove of the Dracula I just got (sorry for the blurry images). Some might think I'm being petty/picky, but as I've said before a $112 pipe should not have an inch long of jagged chipping like that. You really shouldn't be able to see underneath the top part of the Rhodesian groove! If it were sold as a second for $50, fine. But it wasn't. I won't name the vendor because I don't blame them, and I'm confident they'll make good with an exchange. I really hope SP steps up the quality control. This is the 4th new Peterson I've bought, and only 1 had no issues.  ![]()  |

I would be inclined to agree with you, @chico. If you're paying over $100 for a pipe you'd expect it to be flawless... At least, I would.
You said you wouldn't name the vendor but then mentioned sp. Maybe I missed, but If it was sp then that's two qc issues from them in a short space of time...

I would not expect "perfection" at a $100 price point, but that chip is not acceptable on any non-second pipe. How in the world did that make it past QC...
I really hate seeing this, I am a long time Peterson fan and have well over 100 Peterson's in my collection - my heart just sinks....
I really hope Sykes and team can get a handle on these issues.

I was referring to the recent news that Peterson has been purchased by SP, but to be more accurate I should have said Laudisi which is their parent company. But good point - when the Laudisi-era Petersons start being made then sold by SP, they will have a double-level of responsibility for quality control. I'm not 100% sure but it seems like the pipe was stained after that chipping, which is actually worse in a way. One thing I will blame the vendor for is not including the Dracula box, as they pictured online. I mean, if I'm going to be geeky about this stuff I want the full monty! |

Chico, it’s not acceptable and I know how frustrating it is for you right now! I’m hoping SP takes the necessary steps in making Peterson pipes step up their QC, because the pipes being made and sold in the last 2 years have slipped thru without any care whatsoever! Also, bad enough pipes are leaving the factory with serious flaws, but the retailer usually also inspects pipes before shipped. In this case the pipe should not have been shipped to you from the vendor as well. Oh, those Peterson lacquered pipes that are notorious for a bubble finish once the briar heats up are covering a piece of briar with MANY fills. I’ve spent a number of hours ( a total of 4 Pete’s ) sanding and leaving the briar natural, just some buffing and the briar will darken when smoked, but those fills will shine on thru! If I were to purchase any Pete’s now it would be ones made prior to 1990, much higher quality briar👍👍

That’s true, if you wanted that particular style/model you had no choice! But I’ll reiterate, that pipe should not have left the vendor. I’m sure it will be rectified too your liking👍
PS
The Pete’s with the clear lacquer/shellac finish over the pipes that were dyed. All 4 that I had to re-finish were all dyed black properly, it’s the clear coat that bubbles.

Yep - received today, chipped, never smoked. I emailed the vendor within minutes of opening the package. There were no chips in the cloth pipe bag, and the chipped briar is black - no natural wood showing through - which is what makes me think it was stained after the chipping at the factory. |

I just looked over mine (exact same). Luckily mine doesnt have chips. But... it came in the normal Peterson box as well. Yours is unacceptable to me. I hope that whoever you ordered it from does you right. I didn't use the most common 2 companies here for mine (SP or P&C). I know you were looking forward to that one  |

Yeah, that is unacceptable.
The box shows a blue pipe sock also, in hindsight that might be a clue that something wasn’t right... if they staged the box for the photo, it should have been included.... no Dracula box, it isn’t a new pipe... at least that is my thinking.

Some of my Peterson sandblasts look like that too, even ones made before the qc issues. Sometimes I think they go for a too drastic rustication look and take too big of chunks out of the wood. Going for that imperfect, weathered look, I guess. I may be wrong, and sure this may be a qc issue, but I still think thats one cool looking pipe.

I gotta admit that chipping I would certainly complain about.
I'm sure Smokingpipes doesn't check every single NEW pipe they have in stock, which would be in the thousands I suspect and otherwise nothing else would get done. And truthfully they shouldn't really have to, that should be the suppliers duty to make sure nothing leaves the plant or bench without a thorough inspection. I would certainly contact Peterson and ask them what in tar-nation are they selling nowadays, Quality pipes or Basket Trash?

The reference to SP in this thread seems to be more aimed at SP's recent purchase of K&P Peterson. However, as an aside, SP photographs every pipe they sell on their site. So they actually should/would check out every single NEW pipe they sell online. According to them, the pipe you see pictured on their site is the actual pipe you get when you purchase. So, we shouldn't be seeing a pipe for sale at SP.com that someone didn't already look over closely enough to photograph. |

I had issues too with a Summertime X220. In the past Pete's with a high gloss finish were almost guaranteed to bubble.
The truth is, that if your not buying a Peterson costing several hundred, their attitude has been, let them eat cake.
Laudisi/SP need to change Quality Control immediately and take a close look at the staff who has been passing these flawed pipes to market.
