blackmouth210 is correct about my reference to SP - guess that was a little unclear. I just reread your post. You were clear enough, especially cos you mentioned not revealing their identity. I misunderstood and put the train on the wrong track. my bad.

Due to my most recent Peterson experience, I did not respond to SP's survey. It would have been the first time I didn't rate them a 10.

Chipped upon receiving it brand new? You should’ve returned it before smoking. I don’t think this is a quality control issue from the manufacturer. The pipe appears to be damaged from mishandling. Yep - received today, chipped, never smoked. I emailed the vendor within minutes of opening the package. There were no chips in the cloth pipe bag, and the chipped briar is black - no natural wood showing through - which is what makes me think it was stained after the chipping at the factory. In the picture, there appears to be char in the bowl chamber. Looks smoked to me. Maybe they pawned off an estate pipe as new?

I was thinking that if the box is missing and:
That it may have been out on the floor and someone dropped it and chipped it, and tried to do a salvage job.

It seems crappy QC has been coming out of Ireland for a few years. Most of the Petes I have are pre-1975 and where purchased as estates other then a few I purchased from Holt's of Philadelphia in the 80s. I never had a lick of a problem with any purchased new or as unsmoked estates. On the smoked estates we always must remember it is liable to be another smokers problem you are purchasing. Maybe the pipe will jump through hoops for you! My advice is don't spend a nickel on a Peterson pipe until you are 100% sure they aren't a piece of crap. As said in other threads many of us hold out hope Laudisi corrects this huge problem. That is to be seen.

With all due respect, if they aren't doing a "10" job, they need to know it. We've all been brainwashed by our car dealers to give the top ratings to everyone, but in reality, a small company like SP needs to know when things are failing, esp when they've bought another company.

I'll try to get one in better light tomorrow, but it's definitely unsmoked. Unless somebody did an amazing sanitizing job.

Okay, the vendor is being great about this - above and beyond, in fact. I'll reveal them when the exchange is complete.
In the meantime, they have no more 999 rustics and I'm not wild about the smooth version, so I need to choose a substitute. I was tempted by the 03 but already have a Christmas one and would like to try a different shape.
So..... I'm trying to decide between the 68, 69, and 221. For some reason I think those all look better in smooth finish.
Any suggestions on which one might be best - smoking qualities etc.? They all seem fairly similar, but it's hard to say without seeing them in person.

I'm glad that the vendor is being honorable. I can't recommend shapes for you, but I hope whichever one you choose will have no issues either aesthetically or in smokeabiltity.

So I decided to go for the 221 since it's one of the more uniquely Peterson-y shapes. I liked the smooth finish in that model, which was slightly more expensive, so I emailed the vendor and said I'd be happy to pay the difference. They replied quickly and said don't worry about the $8 - they'll send the replacement as soon as they receive my return.
And this stellar vendor is.... TobaccoPipes.com. I've bought tobacco from them in the past and never had a reason for a return, so I'm glad to know I've been giving my business to a smaller company who also has excellent customer service.

Congrats & Enjoy. A solid, classic Peterson choice. I have dealt with that vendor too (pipe only) and they were top rate with quick shipping.

Tobaccopipes & Smokingpipes are the two online TAD & PAD retailers I mostly use, at times WVsmokeshop with excellent results as well. Not so much 4Noggins any more!! Glad your Pete issue was resolved without a hassle 👍👍 I’m sure your new Pete will be thoroughly inspected before shipped!!

I agree. I've done very little business with them but when I have, I have been very satisfied.
I like the new one you chose as well.

Replacement received and as far as I can tell this is a flawless beauty. Well done Peterson and tobaccopipes.com. I very happy with the swirlyness of the stem because I've seen some that were just mostly red. It gives a pipe a really striking appearance. I don't usually go for such sharply bent shapes but I think it looks great in this pipe. Now, what to smoke in it.... Anyone know, by the way, if the 221 shape number is a Sherlockian reference, named after 221b Baker Street?

Congratulations Chico! That's a beauty. This is the second time this month that I have heard that TP has gone over and above with their customer service.

Very nice looking pipe. The amount of black in the stem really makes it stand out more.

Neat pipe. They do look better with more black in the stem.
